Fani Willis Hit with Dire Surprise: 22 Charges
| Copy link to current segment

Time Text
The 2024 election season is fully upon us.
However, unlike a normal election cycle where we would cover things like campaign rallies, speeches, endorsements, nominations, and policy positions, well, this year, we're instead forced to cover the ongoing development in President Trump's many, many legal battles.
And so today, let's do exactly that by heading over to the state of Georgia where President Trump and 18 of his associates are facing felony RICO charges against them.
Now, this woman right here is Ms.
Fannie Willis, the District Attorney of Fulton County, and she is the woman who's actually pushing forward the case against President Trump and his other associates.
And besides the massive scandal that she's already facing in relation to her hiring the man who she was allegedly having an affair with to lead the prosecution against President Trump, well, Ms.
Fannie Willis was hit with some further bad news just three days ago.
Specifically, articles of impeachment have been filed against her in the Georgia State Assembly.
What happened was that last Friday, right before the weekend, House Resolution 872, you can see it up on your screen, it was submitted to the Georgia State Assembly by State Representative Charlize Byrd.
She's a Republican.
This resolution, it accuses Ms.
Fannie Willis of using her office not to pursue justice, but rather for political gain.
The 10-page statehouse resolution filed on Friday by Ms.
Byrd outlines the case for charging Ms.
Willis with violations of oath by a public officer under Georgia Code Section 16-10-1.
And just for your general reference, that particular state statute, here is what it says in relevant part.
Now, this resolution then goes on to list 22 specific articles of impeachment, each one of them being an alleged violation this resolution then goes on to list 22 specific articles of impeachment, each one of them being And out of those 22 articles of impeachment, quote,"...19 of the impeachment charges are allegations that Ms.
Willis' prosecution of President Trump and the 18 other co-defendants under Georgia's organized crime laws was done for the purpose of advancing her political career and so grossly violates her oath of office." Meaning that 19 of these charges, they allege that the RICO prosecution against President Trump is not being done to pursue justice, but rather it's being done for political purposes.
And then the other three charges, well, they are, you can say, a bit more interesting.
One of the charges is for allegedly withholding material evidence from the jury.
Then another one of the charges has to do with Miss Fannie Willis allegedly owing money to the state of Georgia when she took office.
Here's specifically what the resolution says, quote, allegedly falsely claiming she was not the holder of any unaccounted-for public money due to state while owing late fees stemming from her candidacy for office.
Now that is a very unusual charge, and what it basically means is that over in the state of Georgia, it's illegal for someone to take office if they owe money to the state.
And allegedly, Ms.
Fannie Willis was sworn into office while she still owed money to the Georgia Elections Commission, while at the same time she again allegedly claimed that she did not owe any money.
And then the last of the charges in the articles of impeachment here has to do with her quote, swearing in her oath of office to take only my lawful compensation while allegedly profiting from her relationship with Mr.
Wade.
And of course that last part there about Mr.
Wade, that refers to the ongoing scandal that's been brewing in this case for the past three or four weeks now.
Ever since a bombshell court filing revealed the fact that Ms.
Fannie Willis had actually hired Mr.
Nathan Wade, with whom she was having allegedly an affair with, to be the lead prosecutor against both President Trump and the other co-defendants.
She then paid Mr.
Nathan Wade significant amounts of taxpayer money, about $700,000 in total, after which he turned around and, again, allegedly took her on many beautiful vacations to places around the world, Napa Valley, Florida, the Caribbean, and so on.
Now, when introducing these articles of impeachment, Ms.
Charlize Bird, she said this in a statement, again, when she actually introduced the articles.
Quote,"...Fannie Willis has a laundry list of potential conflicts that make her unworthy and unfit to be the district attorney in Fulton County.
Someone elected to that office is expected to uphold the law and not weaponize their office for political gain.
The time to act is now, and I encourage my colleagues in the General Assembly to join me and impeach Fannie Willis.
Now, the way that this works in Georgia is very similar to the way it works at the federal level.
Now that these articles of impeachment have been introduced to the Georgia State Assembly, they will be voted upon, and if it's voted in the affirmative, there will be an actual trial in the Georgia State Senate.
And given the fact that the Georgia State Assembly is overwhelmingly in the hands of Republicans, it might very well go through.
And also, it's worth noting that the Georgia State Senate is overwhelmingly controlled by Republicans, and perhaps they are chomping at the bit to hear this trial.
That's because, interestingly, on the very same day that these articles of impeachment were introduced to the Assembly, on that very same day, the Georgia State Senate also passed a separate piece of legislation, which established a committee to investigate misfit.
Fannie Willis.
Quote, the Georgia State Senate voted on Friday to create a special committee to investigate Fulton County District Attorney Fannie Willis after a Republican senator said she misspent tax dollars in her criminal prosecution of former President Trump.
The state Senate vote was 30 to 19.
The text of the bill said if Willis and Wade's relationship was proven to exist, it would constitute a clear conflict of interest and a fraud upon the taxpayers of Fulton County and the state of Georgia.
It would establish grounds for Willis to recuse herself and appoint someone new to the case instead of Wade.
Now, in terms of why the state Senate voted as they did to launch this investigation, well, according to State Senator Brandon Beach, quote, It is becoming more and more clear that this was prosecution for personal profit.
It is my hope that this investigative committee will use its subpoena power and subpoena witnesses and records to explore if state funds were spent on these lavish trips and fine dining restaurants.
Did security details travel on these trips and who paid for their expenses?
Willis break any ethics laws by not disclosing any gifts she received?
And so it appears that Ms.
Fannie Willis is at the moment getting hit from every angle.
The Georgia State Assembly is about to vote on these articles of impeachment.
And just for reference, as I mentioned earlier, the Georgia Assembly is overwhelmingly right now in the hands of Republicans.
And so if they vote to go ahead and impeach, then the impeachment trial would actually take place in the Georgia Senate, which is also overwhelmingly at this moment in the hands of Republicans.
Then, aside from the articles of impeachment, you have the Georgia State Senate, completely independently, launch their investigation into this matter, the one that we just read about.
Then, you also have the chairman of the Fulton County Audit Committee launching a separate investigation into the supposed misuse of county funds.
Then, you also have the House Judiciary Committee at the federal level launching their own official investigation into Mr.
Nathan Wade and whether or not federal money flowed through Fulton County to him.
You have the presiding judge in the actual RICO case against President Trump and his 18 other co-defendants.
He's also demanding answers from Ms.
Fannie Willis, giving her a deadline of this upcoming Friday to answer questions in writing regarding this whole supposed affair.
You also have the divorce proceedings between Mr.
Nathan Wade and his actual wife, Ms.
Jocelyn Wade, in which details about this alleged affair are beginning to come to light one after the other.
And then, after all that...
On February 15th of next month, so basically in two weeks from now, Ms.
Fannie Willis will have to give a televised hearing answering questions about this alleged affair in the courtroom in front of the RICO judge.
It seems like realistically, even from just a time perspective, it's hard to imagine that anyone in the Fulton County District Attorney's Office can reasonably be expected to devote their full attention to the Trump case when they have these different investigations...
