Time Text
A Chinese vaccine expert claimed that a CCP virus vaccine developed by Sinopharm, a Chinese state-run company, has 73 side effects and is the most unsafe vaccine in the world.
His social media post was removed by the authorities within hours, and he was forced to apologize.
Chinese health regulators gave conditional approval for Sinopharm's vaccine on December 30.
It was then immediately used for mass inoculation in China.
However, on January 5, Chinese vaccine expert Tao Lina posted an article on Weibo, a Twitter-like platform, saying that Sinopharm's inactivated vaccine has as many as 73 side effects, making it the most unsafe vaccine in the world.
Tao said he had just obtained and read through the disclaimer for the vaccine, which sent a chill up his spine.
As he counted the side effects section, he noticed that there are 73 adversary effects.
In addition to common vaccine side effects, such as injection site pain and headache, there are other serious reactions that are quite unusual.
For example, high blood pressure, vision deterioration, loss of taste, delayed menstrual cycles, and urinary incontinence are listed as possible side effects.
Tao emphasised that since the advent of the smallpox vaccine in 1798, none of the vaccines developed in the past 220 years ever induced high blood pressure as a side effect.
But Sinopharm's CCP virus vaccine does.
It could win the Guinness World Record in this respect.
It really made me feel speechless, Tau said.
He further concluded that, considering the total number of side effects for this vaccine, he believes there was no parallel before and there will be none ever after.
Tau's article attracted widespread attention but was quickly deleted by the platform.
Tao is 43 years old and has been working at the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention since August 2000.
His main responsibility is vaccination regulation, according to Shanghai CDC's website.
Beijing Commercial Daily interviewed him on December 31 to seek his advice on coronavirus vaccines, a week before he made the above negative comments on Sinopharm's vaccine.
This is not the first time that Sinopharm's inactivated vaccine raised concerns.
Shortly after it was approved for mass inoculation a few days ago, Sinopharm suddenly reversed its previous claim that elderly people, patients with underlying diseases, would be the priority recipients.
Instead, the company excluded elderly people over 60, as well as patients with hypertension, diabetes and other underlying diseases, causing many to question its effectiveness and safety.
Based on current findings, those who have been infected with the novel coronavirus do not seem to develop effective immunity, which explains why there are cases of reinfections.
If this is true, the immunity induced by vaccines cannot be better than the immunity induced by natural infections.
In this situation, the target group for vaccination should be high-risk individuals who may become severely ill when infected, that is, seniors and people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, etc.
If the Sinopharm vaccine cannot be applied to high-risk individuals, it is actually hard to evaluate how much use it is.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a statement on January 6, saying that as of December 23, 2020, more than 1.8 million people in the United States had received the first dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, and 4,393 – that's 0.2% – adverse events were reported.
Pfizer's vaccine has also shown protection for seniors in Phase 3 clinical trials.
In comparison, when Sinopharm's vaccine was approved, Chinese state media simply claimed that the vaccine showed 79.34% efficacy, but didn't publish any data from clinical trials.
We have encountered a sudden outbreak of a new virus, so we need to develop vaccines as soon as possible.
Under such circumstances, we have to be very solid in the theoretical aspect so that we can make sure at the beginning that we are taking the safest path.
For Cinefirm's vaccine, which is an inactivated whole virus vaccine, I can't say that it is the most unsafe, but I can tell you it does not belong to the safest path we will take in this emergency situation.
It may run into problems, as had happened in the development of SARS vaccine.
During SARS vaccine development more than 10 years ago, a Hong Kong research team discovered that an inactivated whole virus vaccine induced antibody-dependent enhancement, ADE, in experimental animals.
When the vaccinated animals were exposed to the real virus, antibodies induced by the vaccine ended up causing more severe lung damage and inflammation.
I would be very cautious If you don't have to receive vaccination as a job requirement, I would suggest not taking the inoculation for now.
Although the pandemic is getting very serious, if the vaccine causes even worse outcomes than the pandemic itself, you have to be very careful about it.
In a recent interview with China Central TV, Dr.
Zhong Nanshan, the Chinese government's senior medical advisor on fighting the coronavirus, said that people shouldn't place all their hopes on vaccines, suggesting that he's not confident with Chinese-made vaccines.
Zhong said, even if the vaccine successfully induced antibodies, does it protect you from infection?
Nobody knows.
If you are infected after vaccination, are you going to have symptoms or not?
Nobody knows.
If you are infected but display no symptoms, can you spread the virus to other people?
The answer is the same.
Nobody knows.
