Slightly Offensive - Elijah Schaffer - Democratic Socialists of America March for Migrant Caravan Aired: 2018-12-11 Duration: 11:23 === Welcome Refugees (04:29) === [00:00:00] Are we ready to organize and fight for freedom for all migrants and refugees? [00:00:04] Yeah! [00:00:10] Welcome back to another episode of Slightly Offensive. [00:00:11] We're here at the DSA March for the caravan at the southern border and we are covering what it is that's going on and what it is that we're fighting for. [00:00:18] Excuse me, sir. [00:00:19] Do you mind if I ask you a little bit about what your sign says and what it is you're here to march for? [00:00:23] It says welcome refugees. [00:00:25] My name is Louise. [00:00:26] Alright Louise, so what is it particularly that we want to primarily accomplish here in this march? [00:00:32] We want the people who are in the caravan to give them a chance to come to this country and find any type of economic help that they can because they're sacrificing their lives to come here. [00:00:44] One report from BBC was sort of suggesting, including NBC, that a lot of these were men who were not coming here for asylum but for economic rights. [00:00:52] Do you think that we should allow immigrants in for other reasons than asylum in this caravan or what should we do with those that are not seeking asylum or proven otherwise? [00:01:01] Well I think they need to go through the due process, however that works. [00:01:06] Yeah, I'm not that knowledgeable about it. [00:01:09] These are tough people in many cases. [00:01:11] A lot of young men, strong men, and a lot of men that maybe we don't want in our country. [00:01:17] But again, we'll find that out through the legal process. [00:01:20] Awesome. [00:01:20] So obviously a lot of them claim to be seeking asylum. [00:01:23] What do we do with the migrants in the caravan that are not seeking asylum? [00:01:27] Like what do you mean? [00:01:27] That's a very broad question. [00:01:30] From the due process, so in the caravan, if the courts basically show that they're not seeking asylum, what do we do? [00:01:37] Oh, I think that these people, I feel like the people who are coming to the caravan are in a crisis and they really, and the people who are doing that, the due process, you know, the legal process to go there, they should really, I think should, whatever it is, should be inclusive for all. [00:01:55] And I think that these people should have more attention to them, to the people who are actually applying, because most people who apply tend to be middle class. [00:02:01] So I would say that these people who are coming are mostly like in property and they don't have that type of help to get a lawyer and try to apply to legally come here. [00:02:12] These people are really in a crisis trying to come here as a way to seek opportunity because that's the only thing they can do. [00:02:22] Hopefully the USA is looking for help. [00:02:25] But they've overrun the Mexican police and they've overrun and hurt badly Mexican soldiers. [00:02:32] So this isn't an innocent group of people and they should turn back now. [00:02:37] People in Mexico are very patriotic and nationalists just like Americans are here. [00:02:43] Xenophobia is just everywhere. [00:02:45] When there's a presence of another group, of another nationalism, they see it as a way of invasion because a lot of people use the word invasion. [00:03:38] And we blame this fascist country, this government that continues to scapegoat immigrants and migrants and refugees for this crisis that we're in. [00:03:48] Because the reality is the true criminals are President Trump. [00:03:52] Are we going to let the U.S. government and corporations destroy our communities? [00:03:58] Are we ready to organize and fight for freedom for all migrants and refugees? [00:04:02] Yeah! [00:04:04] Together we can defeat this U.S. Empire. [00:04:06] Together we can win a new world. [00:04:09] The people united! [00:04:11] Will never be divided! [00:04:14] El Pueblo! === Assault on Journalism (03:52) === [00:04:15] Umilo! [00:04:16] El Mace out of this evil! [00:04:18] Our enemies are very organized! [00:04:20] Alright, so basically, if you guys want to know, we might not get any interviews for the rest of the day because the speaker before us just announced that anybody who's here giving interviews is a fascist. [00:04:30] Now, what's interesting is, is in order to proclaim fascism, they've shut down all the press and the media at this event, which is a brilliant way to show that you're not a fascist. [00:04:39] And by the way, this is put on by the DSA, the Democratic Socialists of America. [00:04:42] So we all know what would happen if they got into power. [00:04:44] You would not be able to get interviews from anybody who disagrees with them because it might show what they actually believe. [00:04:49] That's what they're trying to prevent. [00:04:50] That's what we're here not just to do, but we're here to speak the truth. [00:04:53] Hey, did I meet you before one time? [00:04:55] Yeah, you did. [00:04:56] Cool. [00:04:57] Okay. [00:04:57] What's up? [00:04:59] Can we make peace with each other? [00:05:00] No, no, no we cannot. [00:05:01] All right. [00:05:02] No peace. [00:05:03] She said that we can't make peace, but that's fine. [00:05:07] We can't make peace. [00:05:08] So that's again, here's what happens when they get in power. [00:05:10] They don't want peace with their enemies. [00:05:12] They want war. [00:05:14] She's going to show up in every one of our things. [00:05:18] The media doesn't. [00:05:19] We're all about how at the very. [00:05:22] Hi, you assaulted a journalist at Cal State Long Beach. [00:05:25] You actually hit his camera out of his hand. [00:05:27] Why did you do that? [00:05:29] Why did that happen? [00:05:30] Why would you assault a journalist? [00:05:33] You broke their camera, actually. [00:05:35] There's video evidence of you doing it. [00:05:36] Why are you touching her? [00:05:37] I'm not touching her. [00:05:38] I haven't touched her. [00:05:39] Yeah, don't assault her. [00:05:40] I didn't assault her. [00:05:41] She assaulted a journalist. [00:05:42] Why are you here? [00:05:43] Because I'm asking her why she assaulted a journalist. [00:05:46] And now they're blocking me with signs. [00:05:48] They just shut me down. [00:05:50] They said I'm a fascist. [00:05:51] I asked them, why did they assault a journalist at Cal State Long Beach? [00:05:54] Why did they break the camera? [00:05:56] And she was like, I didn't assault anyone. [00:05:58] And then he goes, I'm assaulting her. [00:06:00] He said I was assaulting her by having a mic in her face. [00:06:03] Can I give you my phone so you can go back over there with that footage on my Instagram? [00:06:06] Do you have it? [00:06:06] Do you have a phone? [00:06:07] Do you have an extra phone? [00:06:08] Do you have a phone? [00:06:08] Do you have a phone? [00:06:10] countries to brutally talking about it is definitely and like having the respect to talk to a person that is the complete opposite of you is also part of it But I think activisms like this is also effective too. [00:06:23] And I want to thank you very much for actually having a conversation, by the way, because most people won't talk because we are right-leaning, but I appreciate that. [00:06:29] Thank you. [00:06:29] You lied to me. [00:06:30] What? [00:06:30] You're turning, you're twisting everybody's words around. [00:06:32] I never even edited the video. [00:06:34] You're lying. [00:06:34] You're making, you're baiting people into giving you responses. [00:06:37] I never did. [00:06:38] Yes. [00:06:38] What's response? [00:06:39] You're baiting people right now. [00:06:40] Get the fucking shit. [00:06:41] Hey, out of here. [00:06:42] Hey! [00:06:44] Basically, here's a video of you assaulting him. [00:06:46] Here's the video evidence of you doing it. [00:06:48] Get it of her. [00:06:50] You said you didn't assault him, but here's evidence. [00:06:53] But she said she didn't assault a journalist, but there's nothing of that. [00:06:56] There's video evidence. [00:06:58] Get the fuck out of here. [00:06:59] Are you going to assault me? [00:07:00] On camera? [00:07:01] Are you going to assault me on camera? [00:07:04] I mean, get the fuck out of here. [00:07:06] Okay, I mean, you can assault me and then I can file charges or you can just be respectful. [00:07:09] I know the state attorney and the city attorney are going to be. [00:07:11] Okay. [00:07:12] If you punch me, I guarantee you something will happen. [00:07:14] Nothing's going to happen. [00:07:15] Okay, so then punch me. [00:07:16] I'm telling you, I'm using my rights to get you. [00:07:18] Okay. [00:07:18] So you're not going to punch me. [00:07:20] Why would I do that? [00:07:20] Okay, good. [00:07:21] Because it sounded a little like a threat. [00:07:23] Yeah, because you love being a victim. [00:07:24] Congrats. [00:07:24] No, no, I actually don't like being a victim. [00:07:26] I hate the victim mentality. [00:07:27] May we never forget the cross and the love. [00:07:34] The price that was paid so that we might live. [00:07:41] May we never forget. [00:07:44] And they should turn back now. [00:07:46] What's up, man? [00:07:46] Nice to meet you. [00:07:47] What's your name? [00:07:48] What was your name? [00:07:49] Will. [00:07:49] It was shocking to me that they talk about white Europeans coming over here 500 years ago and basically killing all of them and taking this country from them. === It's Good Business Right Here (03:08) === [00:08:00] But then they want to let more people into this country who aren't legally here. [00:08:04] Which just seems kind of counterproductive to me. [00:08:07] You know what I mean? [00:08:08] Like, it doesn't make much sense that people came over, they didn't like that, but then they want to let more people in. [00:08:12] Here's our friend again. [00:08:13] She's right here. [00:08:15] There she is. [00:08:19] She's my best friend. [00:08:21] We're stopping traffic. [00:08:22] Yes, hold up. [00:08:27] El Pueblo! [00:08:28] Wu Nigo! [00:08:32] I'm trying to get a hot dog. [00:08:33] I don't have any cash. [00:08:34] I'd like to get a hot dog here. [00:08:36] I'm looking for a Chipotle. [00:08:37] Have anyone seen a Chipotle? [00:08:38] Three hot dogs. [00:08:40] It's good business. [00:08:41] It's good business right here, huh? [00:08:44] It's a good spot. [00:08:45] Smart. [00:08:46] Oh, back America to the Philippines. [00:08:49] Down with the U.S. war machine. [00:08:51] It's a new one. [00:08:54] Got to the Philippines, down with the U.S. war machine. [00:09:02] Down with the U.S. war machine. [00:09:05] This is a guy from AIM, Southern California, who actually led the blockade right here for how many days, Marco? [00:09:14] We were actually there. [00:09:14] That was great. [00:09:16] Oh, my gosh. [00:09:18] He took 87 days off work. [00:09:20] So basically, the speech was that this young man has been helping people on the other side of the border. [00:09:24] So, Samadi. [00:09:26] Samadians told me. [00:09:29] You're one of the leaders in Hollywood. [00:09:34] The world was won a huge victory. [00:09:40] A public transit bus hunt for you. [00:09:41] That's the best support you got. [00:09:43] That's not good. [00:09:45] Not looking good. [00:09:49] Not looking good. [00:09:50] I came. [00:09:51] I crossed the border when I was 12 years old. [00:09:54] I don't consider myself a criminal. [00:09:56] and they should turn back now. [00:10:07] What's happening? [00:10:10] Umm... [00:10:11] Well, I think that we have to ask ourselves what's the reason for the instability. [00:10:17] You know, and as far as history can tell, the United States has been intervening in these other countries. [00:10:29] Sorry, a little distracted. [00:10:32] He's a fascist. [00:10:33] Sorry, we can keep interviewing. [00:10:34] We can keep interviewing. [00:10:38] I'm sick! I'm sick! [00:10:45] You are no soul! === Nice To See You Smiling (00:37) === [00:10:48] Here! [00:10:48] Fascist and Santa Claus has! [00:10:50] Everybody ignore them! [00:10:51] Race! [00:10:53] Sorry. [00:10:53] Yeah, no, I know. [00:10:54] It's distracted. [00:10:54] I can't focus either. [00:10:55] We'll just cover this for right now. [00:10:57] This is cool. [00:11:00] I also hate racism, guys. [00:11:01] Fuck you, fascists. [00:11:06] Thank you so much. [00:11:07] You have a wonderful smile, by the way. [00:11:09] Well, thank you. [00:11:10] We are here. [00:11:10] It was good to see you tonight. [00:11:11] Some people were a bit angry at people tonight, but you were very smiling, and it was nice to see. [00:11:15] All right, thank you. [00:11:16] What's your name? [00:11:17] Here. [00:11:17] Marn. [00:11:18] M-A-O-N. [00:11:19] Hello, Martin. [00:11:19] Pleasure. [00:11:19] I'm Elijah. [00:11:20] Nice to meet you. [00:11:21] Nice to meet you. [00:11:22] Have a great rest of the protest.
