The David Knight Show - Jesus Saves, Santa SELLS Aired: 2024-12-20 Duration: 05:51 === Santa's Competition with Christ (05:12) === [00:00:04] Well, finally, as we're starting to come to a close, this article from The Center. [00:00:10] And I thought it was really good. [00:00:12] Santa is competing with Christ for the worship of your children. [00:00:17] You know, it's not just at the schools. [00:00:20] It's the culture that we live in. [00:00:23] And he says, this isn't the benevolent figure of yore, a generous bishop pointing weary sinners to Christ. [00:00:29] Today's Santa is something even more sinister. [00:00:31] He is a usurper, an idol, an affront to the glory of the incarnate God who is the true focus of Christmas. [00:00:39] As I've said, Jesus saves, Santa sells merchandise. [00:00:45] Let's start with the obvious. [00:00:46] Children are practically taught to treat Santa Claus like a deity. [00:00:49] They bow to him literally, figuratively. [00:00:50] They sit on his throne if he allows it. [00:00:52] They whisper their deepest desires into his or some weird old man's ears as if he's got the power to grant it to them. [00:01:00] Yeah, because we got someone who is, as the song goes, Santa Claus coming to town, you know? [00:01:05] He's omniscient. [00:01:06] He's omnipresent. [00:01:07] You know, he knows if you've been good or bad. [00:01:10] He knows if you're sleeping. [00:01:11] He knows if you're awake and all the rest of this stuff, right? [00:01:14] These are all attributes of God. [00:01:15] You know, and that song goes back to 1934. I looked it up today. [00:01:18] That has been around for a long time. [00:01:22] But they go to painstaking links many parents do to perpetuate this lie. [00:01:28] And I always said that, you know, I told our kids there is no Santa Claus because I didn't want to have a situation someday where they think, well, they lied to me about Santa Claus. [00:01:39] What else is he lying to me about? [00:01:42] Don't lie to your kids. [00:01:44] And I just, you know, always remind him every Christmas, and I said that to a whistler one year when he was little, and he said, I know that, Dad. [00:01:52] If there was somebody like Santa Claus, they'd be in the Bible. [00:01:55] I thought that was the best reply I've ever seen. [00:01:58] But this is idolatry, says dissenter, and I agree with that. [00:02:01] Santa isn't just a figure of fantasy. [00:02:03] He's a competitor competing with Christ himself for the worship of children. [00:02:06] And the world has been more than happy to make room for him. [00:02:10] Children sing songs in his honor, songs that extol his virtues and his power. [00:02:16] They sit for photo shoots with him, eager to bask in the glow of his presence. [00:02:21] They leave offerings for him, milk and cookies. [00:02:24] Like a pagan ritual. [00:02:28] Some children even pray to him, clasping their hands and whispering requests because Santa, let's not forget, has become their benevolent giver of gifts. [00:02:38] And let's not let the adults off the hook either. [00:02:41] Santa doesn't just captivate children. [00:02:42] He enchants grown men and women too. [00:02:44] Adults perpetuate the myth with zeal, investing time, money, and creativity into the charade. [00:02:50] They wear his likeness on ugly sweaters. [00:02:52] They plaster his face on cards. [00:02:55] The irony here is razor sharp. [00:02:59] While churches lament the secularization of Christmas, they often fail to recognize that Santa has become its golden calf. [00:03:07] That's it, right? [00:03:08] Fox News. [00:03:09] Oh, wow. [00:03:11] Look, you can't say Merry Christmas. [00:03:13] But like Megyn Kelly would say, but we all know that Santa Claus is white. [00:03:18] What ridiculous nonsense. [00:03:21] Santa is the idol par excellence, tailor-made for a materialistic society. [00:03:26] You get gifts without repentance. [00:03:28] You get blessings without sacrifice. [00:03:30] You get joy without the cross. [00:03:34] He's everything our sinful hearts desire, generous, non-judgmental, and entirely harmless. [00:03:40] Some will argue that Santa is just a bit of fun, a harmless tradition. [00:03:44] We ought to lighten up, right? [00:03:46] But this is a lie that we tell to ourselves to justify our complicity. [00:03:49] Idols are never harmless. [00:03:51] They always distort the truth. [00:03:53] And he said, a lot of this turns Christmas into a time of, you know, what can I give? [00:03:59] Instead of that, you get, what can I get? [00:04:01] And look, I understand. [00:04:03] You know, I grew up in a household that they didn't even celebrate Christmas from a religious standpoint. [00:04:12] We have to also, inside what we look at from a religious standpoint, distinguish between truth and falsity. [00:04:18] I don't care about what time of year it is. [00:04:20] I'm not going to die on it being December 25th. [00:04:24] I don't think it was. [00:04:25] I've got other times of the year that I think it was. [00:04:28] But I think it's an opportunity to celebrate Christ's incarnation. [00:04:32] It's an opportunity for us to talk about it, and we still should. [00:04:37] Civil, a place I started homeschooling this year. [00:04:39] Best thing I've ever done as a parent. [00:04:41] David convinced me it was possible.
