[00:00:04]  After the overwhelming response we got from podcast number 68 with Mike Rinder about Scientology, I got the opportunity to speak with today's guest, Ron Miscavige.
[00:00:15]  Ron is the father of David Miscavige, who is also the leader of the Church of Scientology.
[00:00:21]  Ron and his family joined Scientology in 1970, and he worked for the Sea Org for almost 27 years.
[00:00:28]  It's also worth mentioning, Ron signed a billion year contract with the church.
[00:00:32]  This was a super fascinating podcast, and it gets really good towards the end.
[00:00:37]  So without further ado, please welcome Ron Miscavige.

[00:01:11]  Listen, when I was a young man growing up in the 50s, corduroy jackets were the thing.
[00:01:19]  And I loved it because it's a little bit dressy, not too dressy, but it's comfortable.
[00:01:26]  Yeah.
[00:01:27]  Because it's just corduroy, it's not like a heavy material.
[00:01:30]  So I found some online, and I got this is a maroon one, I got a moss green one, and a navy blue one, and I love them.
[00:01:40]  I use them for gigs, and you know, sometimes you have lighting on a gig, and that lighting is a little bit hot unless they're using LED lights.
[00:01:47]  So it's a comfortable jacket all around.
[00:01:50]  I need to get some corduroy.
[00:01:52]  Suits in my life, maybe some corduroy jacket, maybe some shorts or some pants or something.
[00:01:57]  Yeah, I don't really wear jackets.
[00:01:59]  Yeah, I know.
[00:02:00]  And down in Florida where you are, you don't have an opportunity to wear it.
[00:02:04]  Now, I just want to check on something.

[00:02:37]  So, yeah, I just did a podcast about a month ago with the guy by the name of Mike Rinder.
[00:02:45]  He was a top executive in Scientology, and we talked a lot about your son, David.
[00:02:55]  Danny, let me just interrupt you for a second.
[00:02:59]  I know Mike Rinder since he was 15 years old.
[00:03:02]  Have you really?
[00:03:03]  That's how old of friends we are.

=== A Long Enduring Friendship (13:51) ===

[00:03:06]  Because I had my family at St. Hill, England, and his dad and mom brought him and his brother, I guess, to St. Hill.
[00:03:14]  And I met him when he was 15 years old.
[00:03:16]  He was just, we have a very long and enduring friendship.
[00:03:20]  And I love him as a person.
[00:03:22]  He had a hell of a job with the church where he had to do things that, of course, he regrets now.
[00:03:27]  But when you're with that cult, You do things that later on you'll look back and say, God damn it, man.
[00:03:34]  I was really, I was really, my mind had been sucked in by somebody and changed into something I didn't want to be.
[00:03:41]  And, but you know, Mike's just a wonderful person.
[00:03:44]  I got to say that.
[00:03:45]  What a wild story that was.
[00:03:48]  The story that he told me and just the impact that Scientology has made on this world, the documentaries that have been made.
[00:04:00]  People's lives that's affected your son is your son has made a huge impact on this world and on lots of people's lives.
[00:04:14]  Yeah, I know.
[00:04:15]  And it's not necessarily a favorable one if you get my drift.
[00:04:20]  Okay, yeah, absolutely.
[00:04:23]  So, can you give me sort of just like a brief background on who you are, where you and your family came from, and how you guys got into this world of Scientology?
[00:04:35]  Yeah, and basically, I am.
[00:04:41]  I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, in a little coal mining town called Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, except in the northeast part of the state.
[00:04:50]  And it was a wonderful little town to grow up in.
[00:04:54]  It was one mile square, exactly.
[00:04:57]  Streets were laid out in checkerboard fashion, easy to get around.
[00:05:01]  If you knew you were going to a certain place, you knew the named streets were running a certain way and the avenues run another way.
[00:05:09]  But the delightful thing about growing up there is this.
[00:05:14]  You had immigrants from Italy, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Ireland, Germany, just about every country in Europe.
[00:05:27]  So this town was like a little Europe.
[00:05:30]  And you had this gathering of people of different cultures.
[00:05:35]  And because of that, I think we learned how to tolerate each other.
[00:05:41]  Do you see what I'm saying?
[00:05:43]  Because every.
[00:05:45]  Like a person coming from a certain country, they have certain idiosyncrasies or certain moral codes and stuff.
[00:05:51]  But living with all these different types of people and different religions, as an example, the Russians who were there went to a Greek Orthodox church, whereas the Italians, the Polish, and most of the people went to the Roman Catholic church.
[00:06:08]  A little bit different ceremony, but sometimes we'd go to each other's church to see what it was like.
[00:06:14]  It was a lot of tolerance of a lot of things.
[00:06:17]  And one of the best things about growing up there was.
[00:06:21]  When they had block parties, you know what a block party is, right?
[00:06:24]  Yeah.
[00:06:25]  You know, people come there and they bring their favorite food and stuff.
[00:06:29]  You would have delicacies from all these different ethnic groups, and it was just out of this world.
[00:06:35]  The town, you could have all the fun you wanted to have, and you could stretch the law as long as you didn't break it, okay?
[00:06:44]  That's the type of raising I had.
[00:06:46]  It was very laissez faire, I'll be honest with you.
[00:06:49]  And even then, I can remember.
[00:06:53]  Going up into the attic of our house, and we had a three story house, and that last floor we kept winter clothes, and there was a library shelf there.
[00:07:04]  And on that shelf was all these different books that my dad had gotten.
[00:07:07]  And I used to go up there, even as a little kid, and pull books off the shelf, and I was always searching for something.
[00:07:15]  I didn't know what I was searching for, but I was looking maybe for answers.
[00:07:19]  I can remember pulling off a book called The Prophet by Gibran.
[00:07:23]  Have you ever heard of that?
[00:07:25]  No.
[00:07:26]  Okay, it's a philosophical book that this guy wrote.
[00:07:30]  And even at my young age, I got something out of it.
[00:07:33]  Not a hell of a lot because I couldn't understand some of the words.
[00:07:37]  But that search carried with me.
[00:07:42]  It carried with me throughout my life.
[00:07:44]  And when I was a young man, I got out of high school.
[00:07:50]  And I, well, of course, I was a musician.
[00:07:52]  I learned how to play a trumpet when I was 11 years old.
[00:07:55]  And I was playing in bars for money when I was 13 years old.
[00:07:59]  And I remember in those days, we played a five hour job.
[00:08:04]  We got two bucks an hour, so that was $10 for five hours of music.
[00:08:08]  And in those days, you can go to JCPenney's and buy a pair of jeans for a buck and a half.
[00:08:13]  So as a kid, it was good money for me, you know what I mean?
[00:08:16]  And I got out of high school, and I didn't really know what I wanted to do.
[00:08:25]  I was playing some gigs, and I finally met a Marine Corps recruiter.
[00:08:29]  Right on the main street in my town.
[00:08:31]  And after talking to him for about a half an hour, I decided I wanted to be a United States Marine.
[00:08:39]  Well, I was only 17 years old, so my dad had a sign for me.
[00:08:43]  So I can remember taking a recruiter up to my dad's insurance office.
[00:08:47]  He had an insurance business.
[00:08:49]  And we asked him a sign.
[00:08:51]  He said, Ronnie, are you sure you want to do this?
[00:08:53]  They're the first ones in.
[00:08:55]  I said, Yeah, Pop, I want to be a United States Marine.
[00:08:58]  So I joined, and I'm not going to make this long story long because it's quite extensive, but I can remember.
[00:09:08]  Going to Paris Island, South Carolina, where they had the boot camp.
[00:09:12]  And the first night there was like a living nightmare.
[00:09:15]  I thought to myself, this is the worst goddamn mistake I've ever made in my life.
[00:09:20]  Did you ever see the movie Full Metal Jacket?
[00:09:24]  Of course.
[00:09:25]  That is how boot camp is.
[00:09:27]  That is not an exaggeration.
[00:09:29]  Well, several months later, I'm graduating boot camp, and I thought to myself, I can make myself do anything.
[00:09:38]  They turned me from an undisciplined civilian.
[00:09:41]  Who had a hard time getting up in the morning into somebody who could discipline himself into doing anything he wanted to in life.
[00:09:49]  And I'm going to tell you, that has helped me my entire life.
[00:09:53]  And it probably in some way impelled me toward being able to join Scientology and stick it out as long as I did.
[00:10:02]  I know that seemed like a little bit of a lengthy story, but that's what I was leading up to.
[00:10:06]  Are you tracking with me so far?
[00:10:08]  Yes, I am.
[00:10:08]  I'm following you.
[00:10:10]  Okay, now.
[00:10:12]  How did we get in Scientology?
[00:10:14]  Well, I was working with a friend of mine called, his name was Nelson Sandy.
[00:10:21]  He was a singer, and of course I played trumpet, but at that point we had a job selling.
[00:10:26]  Nelson Sandy was the guy that said to me back in the 60s, I used to be a doctor, but I lost my patients.
[00:10:32]  It's still funny, all right?
[00:10:34]  We came off the stage one time, we're playing a gig in Greenwood Lakes, New York, and we went over to the bar, and a guy came over and said, Nelson, you're a great singer, can I buy you a drink?
[00:10:43]  He said, no, but can I have the money?
[00:10:46]  He was really fast on the uptake with a lot of shit like that, okay?
[00:10:51]  So now Nelson said to me one day, how would you like to make an extra $100,000 this year?
[00:10:57]  And I said, hey, that's a great idea.
[00:11:00]  What the hell are you talking about?
[00:11:02]  He introduced me to a pyramid marketing scheme called Holiday Magic.
[00:11:08]  Okay, I don't know if you ever heard that word before, have you?
[00:11:11]  Multi level, a pyramid scheme?
[00:11:13]  Yeah, well, AMOI is that.
[00:11:15]  If you know what I mean, yeah, yeah, I know what it is.
[00:11:17]  Multi level marketing is another word for it.
[00:11:19]  Yeah, exactly.
[00:11:21]  So now I got involved in it.
[00:11:24]  Make a long story short I got involved and I purchased products and I became a master distributor.
[00:11:32]  And we used to have opportunity events where we take people into a motel room and have a chalkboard up and tell them how this works and recruit people to do it.
[00:11:43]  And that was the business.
[00:11:44]  Teach people how they can get rich.
[00:11:46]  Exactly, which actually is a bullshit story because the people who get rich are the people that started it.
[00:11:52]  Everybody else is bottom feeders, they're on top and they're making all the good stuff right at the top.
[00:12:00]  So we're at this opportunity meeting, and I am standing next to a girl who we're teamed up with.
[00:12:09]  There's Nelson and myself, and a girl, Kathy, and Jim Hearn was another guy.
[00:12:14]  We became a part of a team, kind of a marketing team.
[00:12:18]  She's talking to somebody, and I'm talking to another person.
[00:12:22]  And this guy said to her, I'm a Scientologist.
[00:12:26]  I said to the guy I was talking to, Excuse me, I said, What is that?
[00:12:31]  For whatever reason, the name rang a bell.
[00:12:34]  Don't know why, but it rang a bell.
[00:12:37]  But you had never heard it before.
[00:12:39]  Nope.
[00:12:40]  So I pinned him down for about a half an hour.
[00:12:43]  And he told me all these things.
[00:12:46]  And I was sucking it in like a sponge that you throw in the water, just sucking the water in.
[00:12:51]  I think, what the hell is this, man?
[00:12:53]  This sounds incredible to me.
[00:12:56]  And he said, You know, you can become more able.
[00:13:02]  I says, Well, I'm pretty able now.
[00:13:04]  He says, Well, do you think you could become more able?
[00:13:06]  I said, Yeah, everybody can become more able.
[00:13:09]  He says, Well, then to that degree, you're unable.
[00:13:12]  Very tricky.
[00:13:13]  That's very clever, you know?
[00:13:15]  So I thought, Well, he's right.
[00:13:17]  So I said, Well, how do you mean?
[00:13:19]  He said, Well, there's things you can do, like you never have to take another aspirin as long as you live.
[00:13:22]  I said, What the hell are you talking about?
[00:13:24]  So he gave me this little thing to do when you have a headache and it'll go away.
[00:13:30]  I said, Well, I don't have a headache right now, so I can't even try it out.
[00:13:34]  But it intrigued me, I'll be honest with you.
[00:13:37]  So now, maybe a week later, I'm driving down.
[00:13:41]  Route 130 in New Jersey.
[00:13:43]  I raised my family in South Jersey, right across from Philadelphia, basically.
[00:13:48]  I'm driving down Route 130 and I realized I have a headache, and he told me what to do.
[00:13:57]  So I thought, okay, well, I'm going to try this out.
[00:13:59]  I tried it out.
[00:14:00]  My headache went away.
[00:14:01]  I said, hey, I got to try this.
[00:14:06]  Now, I started going to a place in Woodbury, New Jersey, where there's a guy by the name of Frank Ogle.
[00:14:13]  He had a group and he used to Did it work?
[00:14:17]  Did it work when you had the headache?
[00:14:19]  It went away immediately and it just blew me away.
[00:14:21]  I thought, hey, wait a minute.
[00:14:23]  Wow.
[00:14:24]  What was it?
[00:14:25]  What specifically was it that he told you to do?
[00:14:28]  Well, I guess I should tell you, but I can tell you this if it works, it'll work sometimes.
[00:14:39]  Okay.
[00:14:40]  But yeah.
[00:14:41]  In other words, this may seem so stupid, you're going to say, are you joking?
[00:14:47]  Here's what it is.
[00:14:48]  He said, if you have a headache, go and look at yourself in a mirror and give the headache to the person in the mirror.
[00:14:59]  And I said, Well, what if there's no mirror?
[00:15:01]  He's okay.
[00:15:02]  Well, maybe if you're out someplace and there's no mirror, get a mental image picture of yourself looking at a person in a mirror, at yourself in a mirror, and give your headache to the person in the mirror, in the mental image picture.
[00:15:17]  That's what I did when I was driving my car.
[00:15:19]  And I am telling you, And I'm telling you, this is not a puff piece for Scientology by any means, but this actually happened.
[00:15:27]  I did that, and immediately, one second later, my headache was gone.
[00:15:33]  Okay.
[00:15:34]  I know.
[00:15:36]  When that happened, I thought, wait a minute, I got to check this out.
[00:15:40]  That seems like a great thing to know.
[00:15:43]  I think it seems like a great tool to use.
[00:15:45]  Well, I don't ever get headaches anymore.
[00:15:50]  And I stopped getting headaches, I guess, in around that time.
[00:15:53]  So, I've never had another chance to take it because I just don't ever get headaches.
[00:15:58]  Now, it could be I exercise almost every day of the month.
[00:16:04]  Maybe I'll take two or three days off.
[00:16:06]  I wonder if that would work with other kinds of aches.
[00:16:10]  I don't know, but you might try it.
[00:16:14]  But there's a whole theory behind it.
[00:16:15]  And I really don't want to go into it because it'll get into the realm of wait a minute, what is this guy talking about?
[00:16:22]  And it's just rather than get into it, I can tell you.
[00:16:26]  That was the simplicity of what I did, and that worked.
[00:16:29]  But that impelled me to go.
[00:16:32]  There's a purpose now for telling you that because that then got me to go to this place that Frank Ogle was having in his cafeteria in Woodbury, New Jersey.
[00:16:42]  It was either on a Tuesday or Wednesday night.
[00:16:44]  And he'd get a whole bunch of people there.
[00:16:47]  And he would say, Now, tell me what you think about such and such, or what do you think about this?
[00:16:54]  And people would originate their answers.

=== The Asthma Cure Theory (03:37) ===

[00:16:57]  And then he'd tell you how you.
[00:17:00]  Shouldn't think that way.
[00:17:01]  That's not what Scientology is these days.
[00:17:04]  But he would also do miniature courses like in communication.
[00:17:10]  So I went there, I think, for about a month straight on like that's four Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
[00:17:16]  And at the end of that, I figured, all right, well, I got the idea of it.
[00:17:20]  And the whole idea of it is to try to be at cause in life instead of effect.
[00:17:24]  And it improved my communication somewhat.
[00:17:27]  So that was my first taste with Scientology.
[00:17:32]  Now, let's backtrack to when David was born in 1960 on April 30th.
[00:17:38]  He was born in a hospital in Lower Bucks County, Pennsylvania, which is just a little bit north of Philadelphia.
[00:17:46]  And he was born with an asthmatic condition that was horrible.
[00:17:51]  And I remember the day he was born, and he's a twin sister, Denise.
[00:17:57]  These two beautiful babies were born, and I just, you know, I felt this overwhelming love for you.
[00:18:03]  You have a child.
[00:18:04]  You told me this when we were talking about this.
[00:18:07]  There's that feeling that you have toward this new person coming into life.
[00:18:11]  And unless you've had children, you don't know what it's like.
[00:18:13]  But to a social person like yourself or myself, it's a moment, I think.
[00:18:21]  Now, his asthmatic condition was terrible.
[00:18:24]  He would turn blue trying to catch his breath.
[00:18:27]  And I was at my wits' end trying to figure out something I could do to help him.
[00:18:33]  I would take him to a pediatrician, and the pediatrician would give him a shot of adrenaline.
[00:18:38]  And that would bring him back to where he could breathe regularly.
[00:18:41]  But I tried all kinds of oddball ideas.
[00:18:45]  I mean, did you get him an inhaler?
[00:18:48]  Of course, we had all that stuff.
[00:18:49]  But boy, when it hits, it's just a hell of a thing getting him out of it.
[00:18:55]  I'll tell you what I did one time because I didn't know what to do and I'd try everything.
[00:19:01]  It was a winter time and he had this attack coming on and he was right in it where you can't breathe out.
[00:19:09]  You can take it in, but you just can't seem to get your breath out.
[00:19:13]  So I took him upstairs.
[00:19:14]  I took him in the bathroom.
[00:19:16]  I took off all of his clothes.
[00:19:17]  I took off all of mine.
[00:19:18]  I actually did this, so I'm going to tell you this is how desperate I was.
[00:19:24]  I stepped in the shower.
[00:19:25]  We had a stand up shower there, and I put the water on warm.
[00:19:28]  I'm holding him in my arms.
[00:19:30]  And I said, David, listen, kid, I'm not doing this to hurt you because I'm with you.
[00:19:36]  So here we go.
[00:19:38]  I turned off the hot water, and that fucking cold water came out like ice cubes, hit both of us.
[00:19:45]  We both started going.
[00:19:48]  I took him out, rubbed him down with a Turkish towel.
[00:19:51]  He was over the asthmatic attack.
[00:19:55]  Wow.
[00:19:55]  That's the kind of shit that I used to have to do to get him out of it, okay?
[00:20:00]  And I was a little kid, maybe seven or eight years old, something like that.
[00:20:05]  Six years old.
[00:20:07]  Anyway, and another thing I did is this I used to take him in a garage.
[00:20:14]  I had weights out in the garage, and I'd make him lift weights if he started coming on.
[00:20:18]  Sometimes.
[00:20:19]  It would work other times if it was so much.
[00:20:22]  Do you think it was like the fact that you were kind of shocking him with something like that, like lifting weights or getting, you know, freezing to death in the shower kind of just gets your mind off what's going on inside your body?

=== Auditing Session Pain (15:36) ===

[00:20:35]  Well, it takes your attention off the other thing and it puts your attention on the fact, mind you, I didn't stand him in there and I held him in my arms.
[00:20:43]  So we both got that.
[00:20:44]  And those fucking ice cubes coming out of that shower.
[00:20:47]  Oh, yeah.
[00:20:48]  I mean, Philly is cold in the wintertime and that water was probably just a degree above freezing, you know?
[00:20:54]  No, I'll tell you where I got the idea.
[00:20:56]  And God damn, this is like, okay, well, we're going this direction because this is all leading to a point, though, okay?
[00:21:03]  Yeah.
[00:21:04]  Okay, now, I'm in the Marine Corps.
[00:21:07]  And I did boot camp in Paris Island.
[00:21:13]  And then the Korean War was over.
[00:21:16]  So they said, what do you want to do?
[00:21:17]  And I said, where do you want to go?
[00:21:18]  And I said, I wouldn't mind going to Quantico, Virginia.
[00:21:21]  Instead of going to Quantico, Virginia, I had to go to advanced combat training in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
[00:21:26]  Which was good, and it was very tough.
[00:21:29]  As a matter of fact, I think physically it was a little tougher than boot camp.
[00:21:33]  But anyway, I ended up in Quantico, and I have a job there working in a place called Schools Demonstrations Troops.
[00:21:41]  What this was was a battalion of Marines.
[00:21:46]  We had various companies we had a machine gun company, an infantry company, a communications company, a logistics company, and I worked in battalion headquarters.
[00:21:57]  The whole purpose of this battalion was to demonstrate war problems to Marine officers because Quantico, Virginia is where they trained officers in the United States Marine Corps.
[00:22:11]  So this battalion of men would go out in the field and demonstrate various war problems, and the second lieutenants to be would be there observing this and learning from it.
[00:22:23]  What I did is I had to keep statistics on everything that happened in.
[00:22:31]  That battalion that day.
[00:22:33]  Like, how many men were out in which out camp?
[00:22:37]  Like, I think Camp Geiger was one of them, Camp Upshur.
[00:22:41]  How many men ate there?
[00:22:42]  How many men were on leave?
[00:22:43]  How many men were on unofficial leave?
[00:22:46]  And I had to compile a complete logistical report and get it down to battalion headquarters by noon.
[00:22:55]  Okay?
[00:22:57]  This is a tough job, and I learned how to do it quickly.
[00:22:59]  And because of that, that was the rest of my day.
[00:23:02]  I was free to do anything I wanted to.
[00:23:05]  So that's what I was doing.
[00:23:07]  Just to give you a color of what my life was like.
[00:23:10]  And I had to get some dental work done.
[00:23:13]  So I went down to the dentist, which is in the main side, had some dental work done.
[00:23:18]  And a couple of days later, at four o'clock in the afternoon, my entire face went into extreme pain.
[00:23:28]  It was like somebody put me in an iron mask.
[00:23:31]  You know that thing they had in the medieval days where they'd push the garnish and knives that went in your face?
[00:23:37]  I'm telling you, it was horrible.
[00:23:40]  I went to see the dentist the next day and I said, Look, here's what's happening, and you got to help me.
[00:23:45]  He says, Oh, I know what it is.
[00:23:46]  That's facial neuralgia.
[00:23:49]  I said, Well, how do you handle it?
[00:23:50]  He said, Well, we don't know how to handle it, but here, you gave me some aspirins.
[00:23:53]  I thought, What the fuck is this?
[00:23:55]  You give it a name, and that's it?
[00:23:58]  So I went back to the barracks, came on.
[00:24:02]  I took the aspirin, it didn't work.
[00:24:04]  I went down to the PX and I bought a bottle of bourbon.
[00:24:07]  I took it back.
[00:24:08]  Take a nice slug and a glass, put me, laid in bed, and went to sleep.
[00:24:15]  I was doing this for about three days, and I thought, Jesus Christ, I'm going to become an alcoholic.
[00:24:20]  I can't continue to do this.
[00:24:22]  So I went the next day, and sure enough, it came on again.
[00:24:27]  I put on my utilities, which is your work clothes, and I walked out to the air station base, which was about an hour, about a mile away.
[00:24:36]  Sorry.
[00:24:38]  I go into the place where they had weights, and I'm in extreme pain.
[00:24:43]  I figure I'm going to lift weights.
[00:24:44]  I'm going to do some goddamn thing.
[00:24:46]  So there was a guy there, and I said, Hey, you want to lift with me?
[00:24:48]  And he says, Yeah.
[00:24:49]  So we were going to spot each other.
[00:24:51]  We ended up working on it for six months.
[00:24:53]  Together.
[00:24:55]  So I'm on a bench and I'm doing a bench press, okay?
[00:24:58]  So I do one set of the bench press, hand it to him, he does a set.
[00:25:03]  I'm doing the second set, I say, here, take the weight.
[00:25:07]  The pain went away.
[00:25:10]  I had no face pain.
[00:25:12]  So I thought to myself, maybe if when you're experiencing something like a pain or some duress, if you could do something to forcibly take your attention off of it, It might go away because that just happened to me.
[00:25:30]  So I concluded this was, I'm like 18 years old at that point.
[00:25:34]  I had this theory that pain, in order for it to exist, has to be fed life by the person receiving it, which I thought was pretty fucking good because that handled that pain.
[00:25:49]  And I never got to facial neuralgia again.
[00:25:53]  Now, let's get up to.
[00:25:57]  Where David has asthmatic attacks, all right?
[00:26:03]  Frank Ogle gave what is called auditing sessions.
[00:26:07]  Are you familiar with that term?
[00:26:09]  Yeah, auditing.
[00:26:10]  It's kind of like a lie detector test they put you through and they ask you questions.
[00:26:16]  Yeah.
[00:26:16]  You use an e meter, which is like a lie detector.
[00:26:20]  Right.
[00:26:20]  But it's counseling, okay?
[00:26:22]  They hook you up to this electronic thing and you hold these two like metal.
[00:26:27]  Rods or whatever, and they ask you questions.
[00:26:29]  Exactly.
[00:26:30]  That's exactly what it is.
[00:26:32]  I think most of the audience watching this probably knows about it if they've seen other Scientology programs.
[00:26:38]  But anyway, I thought, you know what?
[00:26:42]  I'm going to see if Frank Ogle can give David one of these sessions, and maybe, just maybe, somehow it'll work like my lifting weights got my attention off it.
[00:26:54]  Maybe this auditing session can take his attention off of it.
[00:26:58]  So I take David down.
[00:27:01]  And he meets Frank Ogle, and I said, Frank, there you go.
[00:27:05]  You think you can help him?
[00:27:06]  He says, Well, we're going to sure try.
[00:27:08]  He takes him in a room.
[00:27:10]  About 45 minutes later, David walks out.
[00:27:13]  He's smiling, he's bright.
[00:27:16]  I say, What happened?
[00:27:16]  He says, Dad, I'm handled.
[00:27:19]  I say, You're kidding me.
[00:27:20]  He says, No.
[00:27:21]  He says, I'm handled.
[00:27:23]  Now, that was a moment for me because he never had another severe attack.
[00:27:32]  As a child, he would get asthmatic attacks, but they were never as severe as they were before Frank Ogle took him in for that auditing session.
[00:27:40]  Now, how can an auditing session have that kind of effect on you?
[00:27:46]  How much do you think the mind has to do with how you feel and think and are?
[00:27:51]  100% of everything.
[00:27:53]  Okay, well, that's exactly what you address when you go into these.
[00:27:59]  Listen, before I go any further, I'm not advising people.
[00:28:03]  To join Scientology, okay?
[00:28:05]  Because there is some good to it, but the bad far outweighs the good.
[00:28:10]  I am telling you.
[00:28:12]  There are beginning courses that you do, like the communication course.
[00:28:15]  I will tell you, I benefited from that ever since the first day I took it.
[00:28:20]  But you started getting into the other stuff, and it turns into horseshit.
[00:28:24]  And you're going to be out a lot of money, and you're going to have your family disconnected from you and your friends if you talk out against them.
[00:28:30]  So believe me when I'm.
[00:28:32]  Yeah, there's a lot of wacky shit, like, you know, worshiping a galactic overlord, Xenu, that once you get into the depths of it, like, we'll cover this later in this podcast.
[00:28:43]  But the beginning part of it, the part of Scientology that hooks you.
[00:28:47]  There's a lot of benefit to it.
[00:28:49]  There's a lot of, you know, eliminating your demons, getting rid of all the negative influences in your life, you know, getting shit done.
[00:28:57]  I'll tell you, you're right.
[00:28:59]  This is the hook.
[00:29:00]  That beginning is the hook.
[00:29:01]  And I'll show you how that works then.
[00:29:02]  All right.
[00:29:02]  But let's get back to David now.

[00:29:06]  So now, never had another severe attack.
[00:29:11]  At that point, I decided I'm going to get my whole family in this.
[00:29:16]  So you think the auditing session, Taught him how to use his mind in a different way?
[00:29:22]  No, it doesn't teach you that.
[00:29:24]  But probably what happened is this it gets you to realize that you had something, if not everything, to do with the position that you're in.
[00:29:35]  As an example, let's try a little analogy here.
[00:29:39]  A guy's living in a swamp, and every year he gets swamp fever.
[00:29:45]  And maybe about once or twice every two years he gets bitten by a snake.
[00:29:50]  And he makes it to the doctor to get the snake poison taken out and he lives.
[00:29:55]  Now, Scientology is not going to teach you how to cure yourself of snake bites or swamp fever, but it might get you to realize why did you move to the swamp in the first place?
[00:30:09]  You see what I'm saying?
[00:30:11]  Why did you put yourself in harm's way?
[00:30:15]  That might not be a correct analogy for what happened with David, but I'm telling you, it gets you to come to more of a causative point.
[00:30:23]  As to what you have to do with what's ailing you or what's troubling you or some physical things.
[00:30:29]  Look, this is no bullshit.
[00:30:32]  That beginning stuff helps a lot of people.
[00:30:35]  But it does this.
[00:30:40]  You do the communication course and you think, man, this is great.
[00:30:45]  I can communicate better.
[00:30:46]  I know the anatomy of communication.
[00:30:50]  If it goes awry, I know how to fix it.
[00:30:52]  I can handle life better.
[00:30:53]  I can get along better with my wife, other people.
[00:30:57]  So, you think, man, this is good stuff.
[00:30:59]  In other words, you're starting to gain confidence in it, right?
[00:31:02]  Another thing comes along, maybe you receive beginning counseling or auditing, and you come to realize some things as to how come you felt bad about a certain person or why you feel bad about yourself.
[00:31:13]  And you think, this is good.
[00:31:15]  You're gaining confidence.
[00:31:17]  You're gaining confidence.
[00:31:21]  Now, something comes along and they present a fact to you that doesn't quite seem to make sense.
[00:31:27]  And you think, well, this doesn't seem to make sense, but I'll accept it because everything so far has been good.
[00:31:35]  The hook is in.
[00:31:37]  You're saying, you're saying.
[00:31:39]  Because there's things that worked, you knew they worked, you applied them, they helped you in life.
[00:31:45]  Now you're presented with something that was a little bit off the mark, but you think, well, it doesn't quite make sense, but I'll accept it because everything so far has been true.
[00:31:54]  Because now you're a believer.
[00:31:56]  And at that point, you're susceptible to believing everything and anything they tell you.
[00:32:02]  Because you've made up your mind in the first part that it's all good, so it must be all good all the way.
[00:32:09]  Maybe I don't understand it exactly.
[00:32:11]  Maybe there's something about it that I'll learn later on, but I'll accept it.
[00:32:15]  So, you're saying all of the self help stuff in the beginning, the stuff that you should be better at communicating, better at using your mind to overcome your situations, better, it helps you to make better decisions in your life.
[00:32:29]  That is sort of like the peanut butter that helps you swallow the pill of what comes later.
[00:32:35]  Yes.
[00:32:35]  And I'll tell you this if you just, well, you shouldn't say all the things that you get, but I'd say most of them.
[00:32:41]  I can't think of what wouldn't be good, but.
[00:32:43]  I'd rather give it a percentage rather than saying 100%.
[00:32:47]  But the early part is good.
[00:32:51]  That's in my experience.
[00:32:53]  And I can tell you just from my experience because it helped me.
[00:32:57]  But that's to my detriment because then that hooked me into thinking everything was going to be good.
[00:33:04]  You see what I'm saying?
[00:33:06]  Now, if I would have quit at that point, that would have been a favorable thing.
[00:33:13]  But I didn't.
[00:33:16]  And I was in it for 42 years, my friend, okay?
[00:33:19]  That's a long time.
[00:33:21]  You're goddamn right.
[00:33:22]  You wouldn't want to hold your breath for that long, all right?
[00:33:24]  How old are you?
[00:33:26]  84.
[00:33:27]  84.
[00:33:28]  So that was almost half of your life.
[00:33:30]  Yeah.
[00:33:31]  And people say, well, don't you really wish this and wish that and regret it?
[00:33:36]  Let me tell you something.
[00:33:39]  I don't spend time regretting things or going over, oh, woe is me, because the end result of regretting something is.
[00:33:47]  Having regretted something, there is nothing to it.
[00:33:51]  You're living today.
[00:33:53]  You did what happened yesterday.
[00:33:55]  Create a better tomorrow for yourself and do what you can to help other people not to get involved.
[00:34:00]  And that's how I try to live my life.
[00:34:02]  I have a four word philosophy, Danny.
[00:34:05]  And as a matter of fact, I told this to Mike when I was writing my book, Mike Rinder.
[00:34:10]  And it's simply this help somebody help something.
[00:34:15]  And I try to live by that.
[00:34:16]  I don't always do it, but.
[00:34:18]  I try to, and I can tell you, I feel better helping something or helping somebody than I do being helped.
[00:34:25]  That's just me personally.
[00:34:27]  So that kind of puts me in a frame of mind where I'm not always sitting around, you know, drinking a martini and saying, Jesus Christ, look, but what was me?
[00:34:35]  Come on, man.
[00:34:37]  It's gone.
[00:34:37]  There's nothing you can do to change yesterday, but you can change tomorrow, and you can help a lot of people if you do something effective.
[00:34:44]  These are one of the things, like being interviewed by Mule.

[00:34:50]  Involved in Scientology.
[00:34:52]  I hope they walk away.

[00:35:02]  So David gets an auditing, goes through an auditing session, and he comes out of that auditing session and he says, Dad, I'm fixed.
[00:35:11]  Yeah.
[00:35:12]  And at that point, I said, and I'll say it again, he never had another severe attack.
[00:35:19]  He had attacks that were mild.
[00:35:22]  Do you see what I'm saying?
[00:35:25]  And that was a big deal.
[00:35:26]  So he was able to control them.
[00:35:28]  Well, yeah, for whatever reason, because I guess in that session, in that auditing session, he realized that, hey, wait a minute, I've had something to do with this.
[00:35:36]  Well, I'll just, you know, maybe ride the wave a little bit.
[00:35:39]  And I don't know what he did, but whatever he did after that, he never had one where he was dying to get air and I had to, you know, take him in a cold shower, have him lift weights.
[00:35:49]  Okay.
[00:35:49]  Okay.
[00:35:51]  But that was the point where I. Decided I'd get my whole family in.
[00:35:55]  And I did.
[00:35:55]  I took them all down to a mission in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and put them on beginning courses and on some auditing and stuff.
[00:36:02]  And I ended up going to England two times, each for a year and a half, and I took my whole family over to put them on the bridge.

[00:36:36]  Listen, we thought if the Scientology auditing or technology, rather, could be applied, it would help every man, woman, and child on this planet.

[00:36:52]  And I'll tell you, once you get in that mindset, you defend that, you justify why you feel that way.
[00:37:00]  You become arrogant.
[00:37:03]  You think you're smarter than the WOG, which is a person who doesn't know Scientology or who's not in it.
[00:37:10]  It really is a prison of the mind.

[00:38:42]  Did you sail on the ship with L. Ron Hubbard?
[00:38:44]  Never.
[00:38:45]  No.
[00:38:46]  No, as a matter of fact, I never met him face to face.
[00:38:49]  The closest I came to meeting him was after I finished.
[00:38:54]  When we were in England the second time, I got a recording deal with Polydor Records to do an album, which I did do, and a writer's contract with Chapels Publishing for my music.
[00:39:06]  And I sent him a copy of the album.
[00:39:08]  And he heard it and he said to one of his aides, see if you can get this guy for me.
[00:39:13]  They never followed through and thank God they didn't because I may have ended up joining them on the ship and that would have been a dire blunder on my part.
[00:39:22]  I got to tell you, man.
[00:39:23]  Mike Rinder said he was on the ship.
[00:39:25]  I know he was.
[00:39:26]  Yeah.
[00:39:28]  It was quite an adventure he had there too.
[00:39:30]  What a crazy thing.
[00:39:31]  So they were all like, just like, like slaves for Hubbard on that ship.
[00:39:38]  He was just captaining the ship.
[00:39:40]  And he wore this crazy captain's outfit.

[00:39:46]  Smoked a pipe and sailed the seven seas with his slave workers.
[00:39:51]  His messengers.
[00:39:51]  They were Commodore's messengers.
[00:39:53]  That's what they called him.
[00:39:54]  Oh, that's what he called himself, the Commodore?

[00:39:57]  And the young people he had working for him, he would give orders to give to people on the ship, and they'd go run and give the order to the person and come back and tell Elrond Hubbard what the guy said.
[00:40:08]  They were called Commodore's messengers.
[00:40:11]  And did your son, David, end up on this ship?
[00:40:14]  No.
[00:40:17]  So now getting back to the story about England.
[00:40:21]  So then we came back, and now we're living in.
[00:40:25]  A little north of Philadelphia in a town called Broomall.
[00:40:30]  And David is in high school now.
[00:40:33]  I come home from work one day and he's laying in his room with his head in his hands like that, laying that back.
[00:40:40]  I say, Dave, what's up, man?
[00:40:42]  And he says, Dad, he says, I don't want to go to school anymore.
[00:40:46]  I said, What do you mean?
[00:40:47]  He says, Listen, I'm in school and none of the kids want to learn anything.
[00:40:52]  They all smoke dope.
[00:40:54]  They're wise ass to the teacher.
[00:40:55]  They don't show her any respect.
[00:40:58]  He said, it's terrible.
[00:40:59]  I said, what do you want to do?
[00:41:00]  He says, I want to go and help L. Ron Hubbard.
[00:41:04]  I said, You're kidding.
[00:41:05]  He said, No.
[00:41:06]  He said, I want to join the sea organization.
[00:41:10]  Now, at that moment, I thought to myself, I was 17 years old when I met the Marine recruiter.
[00:41:22]  And I really wanted to become a Marine.
[00:41:26]  That actually changed my life for the better.
[00:41:29]  He's going to be 16 years old soon.
[00:41:33]  I got to give him a shot at what he wants to do because maybe he's right.
[00:41:36]  Maybe this is what he's destined to do in life.
[00:41:39]  And I said to him, David, I'll tell you what, I'll help you, man.
[00:41:42]  I'll do whatever I can to help you do that.
[00:41:45]  So I gave him a bunch of money, bought him some clothes.
[00:41:50]  And on the day after his 16th birthday, I bought a ticket for him to go to Clearwater, Florida to join.
[00:41:59]  The Sea Organization, and I saw him off on an airplane.
[00:42:03]  And he went, joined the Sea Org down there, and I think within seven months he was working with L. Ron Hubbard.
[00:42:12]  By the way, from where I am sitting right now, I could hit a golf ball and hit that flag building.
[00:42:20]  That's how close I am.
[00:42:22]  I'm right in the heart of it.
[00:42:23]  Yeah, I believe you.
[00:42:24]  And that's where it all started, right?

[00:42:28]  Give me the background on that building.
[00:42:30]  Like, how did that.
[00:42:31]  Well, on that building, here's what happened.
[00:42:35]  That ship that L. Ron Hubbard was sailing around the Mediterranean, right?
[00:42:40]  Yeah, here, let me drink.
[00:42:43]  Yeah, yeah, it used to be a hotel.
[00:42:45]  It used to be called the Jack Tarr Hotel.
[00:42:48]  Right.
[00:42:49]  Now, here, the ship that L. Ron Hubbard was on in the Mediterranean was called the Apollo.
[00:42:57]  They were running out of ports to go to because apparently the CIA was onto them, and if you're out in the open sea, you can't.
[00:43:06]  Just snatch anybody.
[00:43:08]  Once they landed at port, if you have reason and warrants, you can grab them then.
[00:43:13]  So they decided to sail across the Atlantic and go to the States and go on land.
[00:43:21]  So they sailed across and they bought that hotel.
[00:43:27]  I think it was called under the name of United Churches or something.
[00:43:31]  It was an under the table deal for cash.
[00:43:34]  They didn't say it's Scientology bought it, but Scientology buying it, but they bought that hotel thing on the pretext that they were a church organization.
[00:43:43]  And that's how they got started there at that hotel.
[00:43:46]  It was a lie, a complete lie that they told in order to get it.
[00:43:50]  So he was originally sailing the Apollo in international waters to avoid indictments or avoid.
[00:43:58]  Yeah.
[00:43:59]  Yeah.
[00:43:59]  Because he already owed tons of money to the IRS.
[00:44:03]  I don't know if that was it, other than maybe, yeah, probably.
[00:44:08]  Probably because they had no tax exemption.
[00:44:10]  And he was making tons of money.
[00:44:12]  I mean, he would get like suitcases full of cash delivered to the ship to him.
[00:44:18]  And that would go into bank accounts and Swiss bank accounts.
[00:44:20]  And.
[00:44:23]  Yeah, it was an operation.
[00:44:24]  So they're after him for many things, which I can't specifically tell you.
[00:44:28]  I'm not privy to that, so I'm not going to make up something, but he was on the lamb, okay?
[00:44:35]  So once David flew out to Clearwater and started working at that main headquarters over there, obviously he started climbing the ladder, right?
[00:44:43]  Yes, yes.
[00:44:44]  And what happened?
[00:44:46]  Well, at that point, L. Ron Hubbard was in California and in a place close to.
[00:44:55]  Palm Springs, La Quinta, I think it was called.
[00:45:00]  And it was a date farm.
[00:45:02]  And they used to shoot movies there.
[00:45:05]  They made these movies because L. Ron Hubbard felt that people in society were going illiterate.
[00:45:12]  The education was not that good.
[00:45:14]  They didn't understand the written word as good as they could.
[00:45:17]  So he decided to shoot movies to make points about applying his technical points to other people to make them better.
[00:45:27]  If you see a movie on how to do something, it's monkey see, monkey do.
[00:45:30]  You follow me?
[00:45:31]  Yeah.
[00:45:32]  So he was shooting movies, and David ended up there, and he ended up being the cameraman.
[00:45:37]  He would shoot the actual movies with L. Ron Hubbard on the set.
[00:45:41]  Wow.
[00:45:42]  Oh, yeah.
[00:45:43]  And that happened in a short time.
[00:45:46]  He did start climbing the ladder.
[00:45:47]  There's no two ways about it.
[00:45:49]  And just got himself into a more powerful position where he was what's called the action chief, and that would be a person who would send out C organization members on missions.
[00:46:02]  Like, if you would go to an organization that was not doing well, you'd go there with mission orders and you'd implement those.
[00:46:10]  You'd usually have two people at least.
[00:46:13]  And he would run these people.
[00:46:14]  He'd give them the orders.
[00:46:16]  They'd send back reports.
[00:46:17]  And based on what he got back, he'd give them further orders to do, which was quite a position of power.
[00:46:23]  You see this as the longer he's in now, he's achieving more power.
[00:46:31]  Is he making good money doing this?
[00:46:33]  No, I mean, as a Sea Org member, like when I joined in 1985, we were getting $30 a week.
[00:46:42]  $30 a week.
[00:46:43]  $30 a week.
[00:46:44]  Mind you, you got your room and board, you got uniforms, you got fed.
[00:46:49]  But yeah, that's what we got.
[00:46:50]  And then some years later, it was bumped up to $50 a week.
[00:46:54]  But many weeks, you didn't get paid.
[00:46:56]  If the organization didn't make enough money or somebody fucked up within the organization, everybody would pay.
[00:47:03]  There was a girl who went to, I'll give you an example of that precisely.
[00:47:07]  She goes to an event up in Northern California and she bought, she didn't buy, she rented these fake bushes to put up like a wall around where the event was going on.
[00:47:21]  That turned out to be bad publicity.
[00:47:23]  So she was made responsible for paying what it cost to rent those bushes, which was thousands of dollars.
[00:47:33]  What happened?
[00:47:34]  Everybody in the organization didn't get paid that week because of her screw up.
[00:47:40]  Jesus.
[00:47:41]  I know.
[00:47:42]  It's insane.
[00:47:43]  And I'm gracious when I say that it's insane.
[00:47:46]  You know, it's really like lunatics on steroids.
[00:47:50]  Come on, man.
[00:47:51]  Yeah.
[00:47:52]  And everybody pays for the one person screwing up.
[00:47:57]  It would be like in society if somebody stole a car, everybody in town had to chip in and pay for the car that the thief stole.
[00:48:05]  The thief wouldn't go to jail, everybody was punished.
[00:48:09]  Don't try to make sense out of it because it doesn't make sense.

[00:48:13]  If you know it's nuts, you understand what I just said to you.
[00:48:17]  So now, what does it mean?
[00:48:20]  What is the Sea Org and how do you join it?
[00:48:23]  Okay.
[00:48:24]  The Sea Organization is actually, you could call it a fraternity or a brotherhood.
[00:48:31]  Let me give you a comparable to the Sea Organization, okay?
[00:48:36]  So we can look at it on something that you do understand something about.
[00:48:40]  Let's say the Catholic Church, okay?
[00:48:43]  The Catholic Church has parishioners.
[00:48:45]  That's people who go to Mass and they receive sacraments and whatever they do, okay?
[00:48:52]  That would be the same thing as Scientology Public, who goes into an organization to receive auditing or do courses.
[00:49:00]  Okay?
[00:49:02]  Then they have priests that run those parishes.
[00:49:06]  Okay?
[00:49:07]  In Scientology, you would have staff members running those lower grade churches.
[00:49:15]  That would be staff members that would be comparable to the priests.
[00:49:18]  Okay?
[00:49:20]  But then within that framework, let's say in Los Angeles, You would have a LA Day, Los Angeles Day organization that would be like a priest run by priests, not necessarily C organization, but contracted staff members for two and a half or five years.

[00:49:45]  Now, while you're there, you would have an advanced organization which would be.

[00:53:30]  Well, I'm going to guess at it, but I'm guessing based on people who were on the lines.
[00:53:38]  When I say the lines, in a position to know better.
[00:53:41]  In the 90s, there was considered to be about 100,000 active Scientologists in the world, which is quite a bit.
[00:53:51]  These days, With the advent of the internet, and now look at the toothpaste is out of the tube, you can't get it back in.
[00:53:58]  Come on, the cat has left a bag, okay?
[00:54:02]  And you just can't say, Ah, we were only joking.
[00:54:04]  Come on.
[00:54:06]  It's estimated that maybe it's on the lower side of 20,000.
[00:54:10]  That's going from 100,000 down to less than 20,000.

[00:54:15]  Well, it's a big drop off, but it's deservedly so.

[00:54:19]  How do they still make money with only 20,000 people?
[00:54:22]  I mean, they got a lot of overhead.

[00:54:34]  If you're a church and they're considered to be a church, probably whoever gave them that exemption should go on a Monty Python show and tell the story.

[00:54:52]  If you have a church, you just can't keep on gathering money and making more and more money.
[00:54:57]  You have to show that the money you're taking in has some benefit to your parishioners.

[00:55:07]  Well, one of the bright ideas that they came up with was this they would purchase new buildings and renovate them to the inch of their lives with marble floors and beautiful appointments and everything.
[00:55:20]  And that would be to the benefit of people coming in to do services.
[00:55:26]  They would gain that money.
[00:55:28]  Maybe, you know, some of these cost $10, $20 million.
[00:55:31]  They could put that money into it.
[00:55:32]  Now they have a real estate holding.
[00:55:35]  And they can say that we're benefiting the parishioners.
[00:55:38]  So they're just like laundering all this money through real estate.
[00:55:42]  Good way to put it.
[00:55:43]  Matter of fact, I tell you, that is the brightest answer I've ever had on this.

[00:56:38]  So now, how do they pay their rent?

[00:56:50]  He'd be the guy that you'd meet at the airport in limo.
[00:56:55]  You'd drive him and you'd comp him his room, and the room had everything you needed and free food, everything.
[00:57:02]  Because all you wanted this guy to do was go down and play blackjack or roulette or whatever he played or poker and lose millions of dollars.
[00:57:12]  As a matter of fact, there was a guy who owned the Philadelphia Eagles.
[00:57:16]  And I'm not putting him down now because some people have gambling as a drug.
[00:57:21]  His name was Leonard Toes.
[00:57:24]  He built up so much debt to Las Vegas.
[00:57:28]  He had to sell the Philadelphia Eagles football team to get out of debt.
[00:57:32]  Really?
[00:57:33]  Yeah, that's how.
[00:57:34]  It's fucking crazy.
[00:57:36]  I can't think of the guy's name who bought it.
[00:57:37]  Yeah, the guy who bought it was a real estate developer, and he got it for a good price.
[00:57:43]  He sold the Eagles to pay off his gambling debts in Vegas.

[00:57:47]  So he would be considered to be a whale.
[00:57:51]  So you're saying there's few people in Scientology that just donate tons of cash?

[00:57:57]  There's a lot of them.
[00:57:58]  And when I say that, like Duggan, Bob Duggan, I think he came up with some way to cure or handle a certain type of cancer.
[00:58:08]  He made billions of dollars on it.
[00:58:10]  And I think he ended up giving the church wild guess.
[00:58:14]  I could be off maybe something like $30 million over the period of time.
[00:58:18]  Does he live in Clearwater?
[00:58:20]  I don't know where he lives.
[00:58:22]  I have no idea.
[00:58:23]  There's a bunch of, there's like this really rich neighborhood in Clearwater called Bel Air.
[00:58:27]  Yeah.
[00:58:29]  Bel Air, Florida.
[00:58:30]  And I had a friend who bought a house on the water, like a really nice, like $6 million house on the intercoastal.
[00:58:36]  And the whole bottom floor of the house was like a recording studio that was renovated into an e meter room, an auditing room.
[00:58:46]  When he bought it, it was just like this crazy looking dungeon that they used to do auditing.
[00:58:51]  So, yeah, all the people with money down here are mostly people with money.
[00:58:56]  Yeah, that's what they do.
[00:58:57]  And they give millions, millions of dollars to the church.
[00:59:01]  They have an event every year.
[00:59:03]  In Sane Hill, England, which is in Sussex County.
[00:59:10]  And they have a tent.
[00:59:12]  They rig up a tent, and that tent is rigged up like a big banquet room.
[00:59:17]  If you were to see the field before they started and look at this, it would almost look like a miracle.
[00:59:23]  And they have two events there.
[00:59:25]  They have the Patrons' Ball, which is a ball where all the patrons come and they dance and they just have a good time and they receive rewards.
[00:59:32]  And then they have another time.
[00:59:36]  Where they give out, they have a local thing for the local people in East Grinstead.
[00:59:43]  But that's where the people come up on the stage, people who have given $50,000 up to $10, $20 million.
[00:59:49]  They receive a big trophy and a certificate, and that's it.
[00:59:54]  That money, there's a good business.
[00:59:56]  Look, here, you take a piece of paper, write something on it, and you get $10 million for that.
[01:00:03]  It's a good business, low overhead, right?
[01:00:05]  Yeah.
[01:00:06]  He gets a certificate that he's a Diamond Maximus, Protomus, Colossus, gave $10 million.

[01:00:16]  And they take pictures of you and you smile, and that's the end of it.

[01:00:30]  Like, at what point did you see him start to go down the dark road?

[01:00:41]  When I joined the C organization, we were still on very friendly terms with each other.

[01:00:49]  Listen, I must say this, and I say it on every program.
[01:00:55]  As a child, we had a wonderful time together.

[01:01:00]  He had a great sense of humor.
[01:01:02]  He was a tough little kid.

[01:01:06]  He turned from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde.
[01:01:08]  And as far as I'm concerned, Yeah, maybe he had that built into his DNA to do that.
[01:01:14]  Although there are times when I wonder, maybe a lot of us have things that are there.
[01:01:20]  If they're nurtured, they'll come out, but we don't do them.
[01:01:23]  But in his case, he went from Dr. Jekyll into Mr. Hyde with the acquisition of power.

[01:01:33]  Well, he wasn't a philosopher, he was a member of parliament.
[01:01:36]  He lived in the 1800s.
[01:01:38]  His name was Lord Acton.

[01:01:53]  And I think that's what happened to David.
[01:01:55]  Now, let me tell you when this happened, and then I'll backtrack to when he starts slipping away.
[01:02:04]  While he was in the C organization, while he was higher up in the ranks, we spoke about a little earlier, he did have a severe asthmatic attack and it had to be taken to a hospital to the emergency room to get it handled.
[01:02:19]  So the next day, when they went to pick him up, the guy told me, David came out and he said, Listen, I had an amazing realization, and here's what it is.
[01:02:29]  He had this when he was in there getting treatment for the asthma.
[01:02:33]  His realization was this power is not granted, it is assumed.
[01:02:42]  And that's what he did.
[01:02:44]  He assumed the leadership of Scientology when L. Ron Hubbard died.
[01:02:50]  Got people out of the way who protested him doing it, put his own people in who would back him up, and eventually took over the church that way.
[01:02:59]  He just assumed that position.
[01:03:02]  He was not picked by L. Ron Hubbard.
[01:03:04]  He was not appointed.
[01:03:06]  L. Ron Hubbard didn't appoint anybody to succeed him.
[01:03:10]  When he died, he died.
[01:03:11]  That was the end of it.
[01:03:12]  Didn't have a will or anything?
[01:03:14]  He left a will for the money.
[01:03:16]  But as far as, you know, like if you're in a position of power, Like, if you were a king and you wanted a certain son to be the next king, you'd say, Okay, I want this son to be my king.
[01:03:25]  That would be your bequest, you know?
[01:03:27]  Yeah, you would think a guy like him would have some sort of a plan after he dies of who would run Scientology.
[01:03:34]  Well, you would think that, but it didn't happen.

[01:03:38]  But now let's get back to the question when did I see him slipping away?
[01:03:41]  Right.
[01:03:43]  Well, when I joined the C organization, first of all, you're living in quarters with other people that is, you know, cockroaches and really bad quarters.
[01:03:55]  What he did, he got me a room in this building.
[01:03:58]  Where it was a very nice room and he had it appointed nicely.
[01:04:02]  So when I was through with my daily activities in the beginning part, the S.H. Project Force, which is like boot camp for the Sea Org, while I was doing that, I had a very nice room to stay in and we got along great.
[01:04:15]  And now I go to Golden Air Productions and since I'm a musician, I go right into the music department and the studio is a fabulous looking place.
[01:04:30]  Matter of fact, I'll tell you.
[01:04:31]  When I first got in, the first thing I did was I did an album with Edgar Winter.
[01:04:36]  Does that name ring a bell to you or no?
[01:04:38]  Yeah, I've heard the name.
[01:04:40]  Edgar Winter, he was a rock and roll star of the 70s, okay?
[01:04:44]  The song Frankenstein.
[01:04:46]  You remember?

[01:04:50]  Oh, yeah.
[01:04:51]  You might remember that.
[01:04:52]  That was his, and he was a brilliant musician.
[01:04:56]  I did an album with him.
[01:04:57]  That's the first thing I did.

[01:05:02]  I mean, I worked hard, but.
[01:05:04]  I'm working with him.
[01:05:05]  I'm playing on the album.

[01:05:09]  And one day, I came out of the studio, and David was about 30 yards to my left.
[01:05:18]  And I saw him, and he's walking with his coterie.
[01:05:21]  There's maybe three or four people with him.
[01:05:23]  And I says, Hey, Dave.
[01:05:25]  And he turned and he looked at me, and he gave me a look that I thought, I better not do that again.

[01:05:35]  And that little bit of a hint there was a harbinger of things to come.

[01:05:43]  I realized that at that point, I was a staff member at Golden Air Productions.
[01:05:50]  He didn't call me Dad, he called me Ron whenever he addressed me.
[01:05:53]  On my birthday or Christmas, if he sent me a gift, he'd write Dear Dad, and who always gave me very nice presents and treated me well on those days.
[01:06:03]  But on an everyday basis, I was another staff member at Golden Air Productions.
[01:06:07]  And he was the chairman of the board.
[01:06:10]  When his power hit high gear or supersonic speed, it was the night that he announced that we had tax exemption from the Internal Revenue Service, and that was done at the sports arena in LA.
[01:06:24]  And that was, he shot up in the ranks.
[01:06:28]  At that point, he became a powerful individual in the church, because at that point, everybody looked up to him as the savior.
[01:06:38]  You see what I'm saying?
[01:06:39]  Yeah.
[01:06:40]  And anything he did, any stuff he did, was considered okay.
[01:06:47]  I mean, there are people in politics that way.
[01:06:49]  And I'm not really going to get into politics.
[01:06:51]  But if they have backers who've backed them up for years, that politician could do anything.
[01:06:56]  And they'd say, well, that's okay.
[01:06:58]  That's so and so.
[01:06:59]  You know, it's all right.
[01:07:00]  You see what I'm saying?
[01:07:01]  They become opinion leaders for their followers.
[01:07:04]  Absolutely.
[01:07:05]  You become an opinion leader, and your opinion counts more.
[01:07:08]  More than what the person thinks about you, because his opinion could come to you and you say, Well, I'm wrong for thinking that.
[01:07:17]  It's a delicious thing, Power, but boy, I'll tell you, it poisons a person.
[01:07:24]  Now, what were at this point when did the tax exemption happen?
[01:07:29]  I mean, in '93.
[01:07:30]  And what were you doing?
[01:07:31]  Like, what was your day to day task?

[01:07:35]  How are you getting paid?
[01:07:37]  I was in the C organization for 26 and a half years.

[01:07:42]  I lived every bit of that at the Golden Era Productions base in Hammond, California.

[01:08:19]  So, your relationship, your father son relationship, would you say that that was completely gone by that point?
[01:08:25]  Not completely gone, but it was only on occasion that we had that.
[01:08:30]  Like, I. On a day to day basis, if he came in to see me, and I worked with a guy by the name of Peter Schles, it was all business.
[01:08:39]  It was not father and son at all, not even a little bit.
[01:08:43]  But like, there would be times maybe when we were on a break from lunch and he'd come over because he sometimes would be in an office near where we had lunch.
[01:08:56]  He would come over to where I was and just sit down and shoot the breeze with me.
[01:09:00]  And that was father and son type of thing with me and Becky, my wife.
[01:09:04]  But it became fewer and fewer.
[01:09:06]  And I'll tell you truthfully, what I longed for anything more than presence or anything was that he would communicate with me more.

[01:11:37]  Well, here, you live at Golden Air Productions, you're in a compound, there's a fence around it with barbed wire pointing out and pointing in.
[01:11:51]  You can't get in your car and go to Walmart and pick up some underwear or shaving cream or a razor or something, you know?
[01:11:59]  You just can't leave the base willy nilly.
[01:12:02]  You're sequestered there.
[01:12:04]  You can't make a telephone call without somebody being on the extension listening to what you're saying and then writing a report on what you talked about.
[01:12:13]  You can't receive mail without it being opened by the security guards.
[01:12:19]  And you can't send out a mail.
[01:12:22]  In the sealed envelope.
[01:12:23]  You can write a letter.
[01:12:25]  You have to leave it open.
[01:12:26]  Security guards will get it.

[01:12:28]  If there's anything in there that they don't want to be known, they'll send it back and tell you how to correct it and send it out.

[01:12:38]  My whole life prior to that, I had been basically self employed.

[01:13:06]  Even if I had to go to see a doctor, I would have to have somebody be with me, and we'd have to write in what's called a CSW, a completed staff work, which presented what you wanted to do, how you'd be doing it, and then say at the bottom line, this is okay.
[01:13:24]  And if that was okay, Then you would present that CSW to the security guards at the gate where there were iron gates that opened electronically or closed, and they would either let you go or say, No, you can't go, and you'd have to have somebody go with you.

[01:13:51]  But when you're first in, and like I did the album with Edgar Winner, and I did other things that were good, and I was working in the studio, and Really nice environment, long hours, long hours, and just a lot of duress.
[01:14:05]  I figure I'm doing it for the good of all mankind.
[01:14:09]  That is a very forgiving attitude that I had as for being treated the way I was being treated.

[01:24:08]  One night, I get home and I would get off a little bit early because I had an incident that happened to me where I had heart palpitations for like 12 hours straight.

[01:24:28]  And at night, sometimes my heartbeat would go up to 138.
[01:24:31]  So the doctor said, look, you got to drink less coffee, don't smoke as much, or quit smoking.
[01:24:37]  And I got off an hour early to get extra rest.
[01:24:41]  It's necessary to tell you that because I'm home laying in bed and I'm reading my Kindle.
[01:24:48]  And Becky's not there, and everybody else is still working that extra hour.
[01:24:53]  So, on a Kindle, and I had the older one, which had a mechanical toggle switch that if you press to the right, the cursor would go to the right.
[01:25:04]  If you press to the left, it'd go to the left.
[01:25:06]  Press up, it'd go up.
[01:25:07]  And press down, it would go down.
[01:25:09]  Now, one of the things that was helpful was this.
[01:25:13]  If you ran across a word that you didn't understand the meaning of, you could select that word, press the toggle switch to the right, and it would take you to a dictionary and give you the definition.

[01:26:35]  Annie Tidman was one of those Commodore's messengers that I talked about earlier, and she was with Elrond Hubbard for all these years.
[01:26:44]  As a matter of fact, she and her husband were the two people that were with him when he was traveling around in his.
[01:26:51]  Trailer, house trailer.
[01:26:54]  So she was taking care of him.
[01:26:55]  So she was a very loyal messenger of his.
[01:26:59]  Annie Tidman was on that base.
[01:27:01]  She had to stay there.
[01:27:02]  She couldn't leave the base because she was considered to be a security risk.
[01:27:07]  She developed cancer.
[01:27:09]  So they sent her to Los Angeles to get treatment for the cancer.
[01:27:14]  And they sent a handler down with her, which would also audit her, counsel her on one of the highest levels in Scientology.

[01:27:25]  And up till this point, I would ask.

[01:28:10]  But that was the point that I knew I had to check the further things that were said about Scientology.
[01:28:16]  And I started looking at the internet, started looking at L. Ron Hubbard's war record, which he was not a war hero at all, a lot of other things that he said and did.
[01:28:26]  And it was that point that when Becky came home, I said, Becky, We're getting out of here.
[01:28:31]  And then we started working on our plan to escape.
[01:28:35]  Our plan to escape took us six months.
[01:28:40]  I didn't want to leave everything behind.
[01:28:43]  And the way we worked it out is this I was 76 years old when we left, by the way, and it was on March 25th, 2012.
[01:28:52]  On my 75th birthday, my wife, Becky, got my daughters, Denise and Lori, to send me 75 gifts.
[01:29:01]  Some of the gifts were like a pen, or it was some little trinket, and the other was bigger.
[01:29:06]  But I had these boxes of gifts.
[01:29:09]  So the security saw this.
[01:29:11]  They saw that I got 75 gifts.
[01:29:13]  So then we started sending out particles that we had to her mother, who was going to have a birthday.
[01:29:21]  And they allowed it to go because they thought, well, I got 75 gifts.
[01:29:27]  I'm probably going to give her about 70 some gifts.
[01:29:31]  You follow me?
[01:29:32]  Smart.
[01:29:33]  So that's how we were able to get a lot of our belongings off that otherwise I couldn't put everything in a car.
[01:29:40]  So then it's coming down to the day that we're going to leave, and I get up at seven o'clock that morning.
[01:29:47]  We have breakfast at nine o'clock.
[01:29:49]  It's Sunday.
[01:29:50]  And prior to that, what I had done on every Sunday morning for months is I would get in my car and I would drive across from the southern part of the base through the gate.
[01:30:02]  To the northern part, come back and go into the studio, which in the studio there was a refrigerator, and I always had maybe Italian salami, some provolone cheese, some brie, all kinds of fancy little things that I would store there.
[01:30:17]  And I'd come through the main gate and I'd give these treats to the security guards every Sunday morning.
[01:30:24]  So basically, what I was doing was feeding the watchdogs and getting them used to the fact that I'd be going to the north side of the property every Sunday morning to get a treat before breakfast.
[01:30:36]  So now we're coming to the day that we're going to get out of there.
[01:30:40]  And by the way, the night before, I have a bag full of shoes in a mesh bag, and I'm putting it in my car.
[01:30:48]  And one of the security guards drove by, looked at me doing this, didn't even mention it.
[01:30:54]  And I'll tell you why.
[01:30:56]  My cover was this.
[01:30:58]  I was 76 years old.
[01:31:00]  Nobody thought I would ever leave.
[01:31:02]  And I was the father of the chairman of the board.
[01:31:05]  And those two things were the best cover I had for our plan being executed and going into effect.
[01:31:14]  Now, comes the day we're leaving.
[01:31:17]  We go out to the car.
[01:31:21]  I had a little notebook, which I still have, and I marked in there all the things we were taking and the things we're leaving.
[01:31:27]  And there are two gates on the lower side of the property.
[01:31:31]  The main gate, where the security guards are, has like a booth in it where the security is, and they have infrared things where they can look all over the base and just all kinds of electronic equipment to see if anybody's trying to get out or get in.
[01:31:47]  And there's another gate called the West Gate, which is west of that, about 150 yards down the road.
[01:31:53]  And all it is is a gate that there's a camera on that they can, you buzz, you press a button.
[01:31:59]  They look at you through that camera, and if you hear the gate go Bob, it's opening, and they'll just open the gate for you.
[01:32:06]  Or if they want to question you, they'll say, Well, come up to the main booth.
[01:32:10]  So now we're in the car, and there's I know this because I planned this out on Sunday morning.
[01:32:16]  There are only two security guards on duty.
[01:32:19]  Juergen is in the main booth, and Sal is in the chase car.
[01:32:26]  When I say a chase car, it's actually like a van that this guy has.
[01:32:31]  And he uses it to chase people if they try to escape.
[01:32:36]  But Sal is down at the place where we have breakfast, which is about 50 yards away from the main booth.
[01:32:44]  I know this because the chase car is parked outside that building.
[01:32:48]  So I thought, okay, this is going to work.
[01:32:51]  Meanwhile, my heart is in my throat.
[01:32:53]  I get up to the gate, I press the button.
[01:32:58]  He didn't even ask me a question, he just opened up the gate.

[01:33:31]  I knew that when Sal came there, he would figure, I'm probably going to go turn right to get on 10, to get on the main highway.

[01:33:41]  I don't know what he did, but once I turned left, it's a straight mile shot before you get into Hammett.
[01:33:46]  Once I got into Hammett, I turned right and we were free.
[01:33:51]  That trip across the United States took me almost three days.

[01:37:13]  And I look out the back window in the kitchen, and there's this person, Marion Powell, walking around trying to look through the windows.
[01:37:20]  So I go outside, and there's Greg Wilher and Marion Powell, who had come out to salvage me, to bring me back.
[01:37:30]  And they're trying to be jolly and funny, and then saying, oh, Ron.
[01:37:33]  It's so funny because we thought you're going to go to Florida.
[01:37:35]  We never thought you'd come here, but here we are.

[01:37:39]  And I said, Greg, listen, I'm not going back.
[01:37:43]  I mean, that was a terrible fucking life I lived, so you can just cool it.
[01:37:48]  And then he pulls out this bulletin and he said, You blew.
[01:37:53]  Now, blow is another word for leave without authorization.

[01:38:04]  It says the only reason that a person blows is because they have committed harmful acts to the group that they're a part of.

[01:40:02]  Out comes the West Dallas police, primarily a guy by the name of Nick Pye, who at that point he was a detective.
[01:40:09]  And he confronted the guy and said, What are you doing?
[01:40:13]  The guy says, What am I breaking the law?
[01:40:15]  What am I doing wrong?
[01:40:16]  He says, Well, I'm just asking you what you're doing.
[01:40:17]  You're looking at this house.
[01:40:19]  And the guy says, Oh, yeah, you know, he started giving him a bunch of crap.
[01:40:25]  Now, I don't know where he had the guts to do that because Nick Pye is built like an NFL linebacker.
[01:40:32]  It looks like he can bench press 400 pounds, and he actually can, okay?
[01:40:37]  So Nick Pye says, Listen, I'll tell you what, you're under arrest.
[01:40:40]  Can I look in your car?
[01:40:41]  The guy says, Sure.
[01:40:43]  Nick goes and looks in the trunk of this van, which has blacked out windows.
[01:40:48]  And in the trunk of that van is five license plates from five different states, five handguns, a stun gun.
[01:40:58]  Two rifles, one fitted up with a silencer, and 2,000 rounds of ammunition.
[01:41:04]  What the fuck?
[01:41:05]  Yeah.

[01:41:39]  Now, it turned out that they were getting paid $10,000 a week to follow me.
[01:41:47]  And they had to follow me from eight in the morning to eight o'clock at night.
[01:41:51]  And then if I went out after that, they'd still have to work.
[01:41:59]  Upon the interrogation, once.
[01:42:03]  Dwayne Powell knew that he was in deep caca.
[01:42:06]  He started singing like a canary.
[01:42:08]  And he said, Listen, we had meant the man no harm.
[01:42:12]  And we used these for target shooting.
[01:42:16]  And he was indicted, though, by the way, by an Eastern Wisconsin court.
[01:42:24]  And the church, probably the church, because I don't think he'd have the money to do it, sent up an attorney from Chicago that got him on five years probation.
[01:42:32]  But anyway, as part of that interrogation, They mentioned a scene that happened in a local supermarket that I was shopping for groceries.
[01:42:42]  And this was the summertime.
[01:42:45]  And I had a pocket t shirt on, and I came out to the car, had groceries in the cart, opened the back door, and was going to put the groceries in.
[01:42:55]  I bent over to do that, and I thought my cell phone was going to fall out of my pocket.
[01:43:00]  So I grabbed my left chest with my right hand.
[01:43:04]  These PIs are in the van.
[01:43:05]  Of course, I didn't know that at the time.
[01:43:08]  They saw me, and the father says to the son, It looks like he's having a heart attack.
[01:43:12]  I should call in and see what we should do.
[01:43:15]  So Dwayne called in.
[01:43:17]  And a guy came on the phone by the name of Greg, and Greg said, Listen, I'll get somebody on the phone for you.
[01:43:23]  Within minutes, another person got on the phone, identified himself as David Miscavige, and said, Listen, if it's his time to die, let him die.
[01:43:34]  Don't intervene.
[01:43:35]  Don't do anything.
[01:43:38]  And at that point, when they hung up, the son said, Listen, at that point, we knew if this ever happened, because it looked like I didn't have a heart attack, he says, I'm calling 9 11.
[01:43:48]  I don't give a fuck what this guy said.
[01:43:50]  I just can't believe he said that.
[01:43:53]  So now, I get a call in Whitewater.
[01:44:00]  This is prior to me knowing about this.
[01:44:05]  And actually, I didn't get a call.
[01:44:07]  I'm sorry.
[01:44:08]  Whitewater police came to the door and said, Listen, I want to tell you, you've been being followed by members of the Church of Scientology for the last year.
[01:44:19]  And we just like to tell you this.
[01:44:22]  Could you come out?
[01:44:22]  We want to check your car out for something.
[01:44:25]  So they said, okay, well, the West Dallas police want you to take your car up to them and they're going to check it out for a GPS.
[01:44:33]  So I took it there.
[01:44:34]  You know what a GPS is, right?
[01:44:35]  It's a tracking device?
[01:44:37]  Yes.
[01:44:37]  Yeah, okay.
[01:44:39]  So we took it there.
[01:44:40]  They took it in the police garage and Nick Pye is in there and the guy's up checking under the wheel wells.
[01:44:46]  And on the right rear, he brought me over and he said, You see those scratches?
[01:44:51]  That's where the GPS was.
[01:44:53]  Because when you take it out, it's highly magnetized, it'll scratch the metal.
[01:44:58]  So now, Nick Pye said to me, Okay, so these guys are following you.
[01:45:05]  Do you have any idea why they were following you?
[01:45:08]  I says, Well, Nick, I'm the father of the chairman of the board of the Church of Scientology.
[01:45:15]  So they might be following me, thinking that maybe I'm going to go to the media or the press or something.
[01:45:20]  I have no intention of doing that.
[01:45:22]  And the other reason is this I've had some.
[01:45:25]  Heart problems, and maybe my son was a little bit concerned about me.
[01:45:28]  Did your lights just go out?
[01:45:30]  Can you hear me?
[01:45:31]  Oh, no, yeah, it just got like super dark in there, but it's fine now.
[01:45:35]  Yeah, it looked like there was a little malfunction of something.
[01:45:38]  I don't know what the hell it was.
[01:45:40]  Okay.
[01:45:40]  Yeah.

[01:45:44]  So, getting back to what Nick said, he said, Do you have any idea why they were following you?
[01:45:50]  And I said, Well, I'm the chairman of the board of the church, I'm the father of the chairman of the board.
[01:45:57]  And they consider to me a sensitive particle that I might go to the press or whatever.
[01:46:03]  And also, maybe my son is a little concerned with me because I've had some health problems with my heart.
[01:46:10]  And he looked at me and he said, Listen, I don't know how to tell you this, but I'm going to have to.
[01:46:16]  Look.
[01:46:20]  And he told me the story.
[01:46:21]  He said, Your son, when you were at Aldi's putting stuff in the car, The PIs called and said, It looks like you're a target, that's what they referred to me as, is having a heart attack.
[01:46:36]  Your son came on the line and said, If it's his time to die, let him die.
[01:46:41]  Don't intervene.
[01:46:42]  Don't do anything.
[01:46:44]  Now, when he told me that, that kind of changed my universe.
[01:46:50]  First of all, I couldn't believe it.
[01:46:52]  And it just, even to this day, there's that little inkling of, is this true?
[01:47:01]  And it is true.
[01:47:02]  He did say it.
[01:47:06]  Have you ever asked him about it?
[01:47:08]  I called.
[01:47:10]  I tried to get in touch with him.
[01:47:11]  By the way, he has not spoken to me since I left.
[01:47:14]  I called to get in touch with him, and an attorney got on the phone.
[01:47:17]  And he wouldn't let me talk to him.
[01:47:19]  And I said, Listen, here's what I want you to do.
[01:47:23]  Just get these PIs off my ass.
[01:47:25]  Don't have anybody follow me.
[01:47:27]  And he said, Ronnie, you knew this was going to be the case when you joined up.
[01:47:31]  I said, No, I didn't.
[01:47:33]  Mike, if somebody had told me, if you join, you're going to live a sequestered life on a compound, your mail is going to be read before you send it.
[01:47:43]  You can't get mail in unless it's checked out.
[01:47:47]  You can't make a phone call.
[01:47:48]  You can't leave that compound.

[01:48:21]  I mean, why don't you think there's a possibility of one day your son just coming to grips with reality and just being like, look, I let me at least repent for some of the damage I've done to this world and get rid of the policies, these crazy disconnection and fair game policies, where if somebody leaves Scientology or questions Scientology,

[01:48:52]  Destroy that person's life.
[01:48:55]  That's such an evil thing to do.
[01:48:57]  Like, don't you think there's a possibility your son could just be like, maybe we should just get rid of that shit.

[01:52:43]  Prior to that, All I wanted to do was get on with my life, get back in communication with my daughters, and enjoy life.
[01:52:51]  At that point, I figured I've got to do something.
[01:52:53]  And as you know, and the book is called Ruthless, it was number one on the New York Times bestseller list on May 6, 2016, when it came out.
[01:53:02]  And it was number one for the month of June of the nonfiction books.
[01:53:07]  Even Darth Vader, even Darth Vader, at one point, when his son, when Luke was getting electrocuted by the Emperor, found some.
[01:53:16]  A little seed of love for his son at the end of the movie.
[01:53:20]  Like, there's something deep, buried deep and down that connection with your son.

[01:53:25]  Like, think of David when he was like a young kid, one or two or three years old, and like that kid's still in there.

[01:55:27]  They used to say that when you hit that, you are at cause over life and you can operate independent of your body.
[01:55:36]  In other words, you could have an out of body experience.
[01:55:39]  As an example, and go and read the newspapers in Germany while you're sitting here in the United States.

[01:55:48]  Did they ever teach you how to do that?

[01:57:01]  You, as a spirit, are the thing that is the life.
[01:57:04]  That life could go to Germany and actually read the newspaper and tell somebody in the United States what it said.
