All right.
I want to start off with just...
It's an issue that we saw the other day, and I actually, this is a headline, and we actually put this out on social media at RepDougCollins.
You can find this on our social media page, Twitter, Instagram, any of that.
You can go to the Doug Collins Podcast.
You can find our Instagram, our link tree there on my accounts and go to any of these.
But we put this out the other day, and it was a story that was out of Baltimore in which they had a gun buyback program.
362 firearms recovered at a gun buyback event.
And I put out a social media post that gained a little bit of traction and it said this.
It said, legal firearms turned in by legal owners, 362. Firearms turned over by criminals, zero.
Not sure this was a success.
Folks, we've got to get real about this.
I mean, this idea that is perpetrated by the left-wing media and this idea of gun control is that just because you have a gun, you're going to go out and do something violent.
Just because you have a handgun, just because you have an AR-15, just because we've badly named guns and call them assault weapons, weapons of war.
Folks, if you've ever been in a war, if you've ever watched movies about war, anything can become a weapon of war.
And it's just scare tactics that are brought out there.
But here's one that just, I guess, bothers me more than anything.
And this was involving the church.
I think it was, if I'm not mistaken, the Catholic diocese up in Baltimore actually was presenting...
Partnering with the city of Baltimore on this issue of buybacks.
And, again, it's just frustrating.
Because, you know, quotes in the article that I read were saying, well, we're going to be safer as a city.
How are you going to be safer as a city with 360 guns?
And my curious question is, was all those guns actually...
Were they actually functioning?
Were these functioning weapons that could actually be used anyway?
I mean, or look, I've got, you know, several...
None of your business how many guns I have or anybody of the government's anybody I have.
But, I mean, I may have some guns that don't really work.
What, do you give me $50 for a gun that doesn't work?
I'll bring it and turn it in.
You know, again, it is just...
I wonder, out of 362 people who had these guns, brought them in and got money for them, I'm wondering, you know, again, not going to question their motives.
I think they were foolish to do that.
But at a certain point in time, you know, were any of these 362 people involved in a crime?
Were any of these 362 people have a propensity for violence using a gun, a handgun or a long rifle?
What I saw in these pictures was as many of these turned in long rifles, which we know for a fact, It's not the weapon of choice for the streets and keeping our seats straight, whether it's Baltimore, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, or anywhere else.
It is the handguns.
And there were many handguns that were turned in here.
But again, Did they turn in one and keep one?
I mean, but nobody, no felon, no criminals, no one who's not supposed to have a firearm went up to a police event with the church and said, hey, I want to sell my gun.
And if they didn't ask, that's even worse.
That's negligence on the police department.
If they didn't come up and say, what is your name?
And find out who you are before they gave you money on a gun that you're trying to sell back to the government.
Look, I'm at a loss at this point.
Okay, so if you're actually trying to, your goal is to take firearms out of the hands of those who should not have them, then why wouldn't you check everybody who comes in?
Why wouldn't you run a background on them?
You say, well, they won't come turning guns.
Well, look, they're not turning in guns to start with.
They're going to give you what they want you to have.
So 362 people at this point probably, from the looks of it, turned in extra weapons they had, maybe one that they had laying around in a box they never used, or a gun that they couldn't get anything else for, but then they turned it in, got some money, and now we're claiming that Baltimore is safer because these 362 guns from legal gun owners, and I'm going to make that assumption at this point, But again, and I had actually somebody comment on the post that said, well, you're making an assumption that might not be true.
Again, if you have a criminal who's that brazen to actually come up to an event and sell a gun back, That they are involved and shouldn't have had the gun to start with, then you have more faith in society than I do.
Or you have faith that the Baltimore Police Department and the city of Baltimore and this group that bought these guns back were too stupid to actually ask questions of those who had the gun buyback.
Again, it is this kind of issue that really just shows that this is about getting guns.
You don't like the guns.
And you don't like the people who have the guns.
Many times.
And so you blanket everything else, you blanket everybody else with these ideas that if we just simply take guns off the streets, our problems are over.
I don't know how many times I had to go over this.
England right now, strict gun control, their biggest problem is knifings.
People getting knifed.
They're getting stabbed.
People are using knives.
And I don't hear a gigantic call out of Great Britain for banning knives.
People who do bad things with guns have issues.
At their life, they're making very bad choices.
Many of them are bad people.
But I don't think they had a little, you know, convention down at the local gang spot and said, hey, I hear the church is going to be buying back some guns.
Let's go sell some of the guns.
Make some money.
We'll go do something else illegal with it.
Folks, this is, you know, I don't understand this.
But if you think that's even worse, if you don't think that they're out for your guns, then you also need to hear this story.
House Democrats in Congress have reintroduced legislation that would pose a thousand percent excise tax on semi-automatic assault weapons.
Again, I just quit.
Okay, naming stuff because you don't like them.
High-capacity magazines.
Representative Don Beyer, Democrat from Virginia, introduced legislation Friday along with 24 other House Democrats who don't have a clue about this issue.
The new bill is H.R. 5135. It's entitled...
To actually impose a thousand percent excise tax on the sale of large capacity ammunition feeding devices and semi-automatic assault weapons and for other purposes.
An AR-15 best-selling rifle in the U.S., according to NPR, I wouldn't disagree with that, actually, can cost between $400 for a basic model to more than...
Okay, that's really cheap, but to $2,000 for a higher-end model.
The new tax would increase the prices to a range of $4,000 to $20,000.
Byron introduced a similar bill last session, assault weapons, excise tax, had 41 co-sponsors.
Under the measure, the definition would have qualified as an assault weapon.
Under the act would be a centerfire semi-automatic rifle, shotgun, or pistol that can accept detachable magazines or any one of the standard, a list of standard features.
Again, if you accessorize your gun Then you're going to be banned.
Basically, they're going to take it and they're going to jack the price up.
Here's the way that they're now using the tax to get around their arguments on the Second Amendment.
And there have been a lot of members of Congress, especially on the Republican side, a lot of folks outside who are saying, look, this is just a backdoor stealing of your gun.
And again, do you believe that a criminal could care less about this exile tax?
They're not paying it to begin with.
They're not.
And if you think you can just rid the world of these guns, it's about like, and I'm going to make a choice that may make some of my conservative friends nervous.
You think you can just deport 40 million people out of this country who are here in some form of illegal status?
It ain't going to happen.
You got to deal with it.
And I'm not sure how we deal with this.
But I do know this.
If you do not believe that the left wants to take guns because they don't like guns and they don't care about your rights under the Second Amendment to have those guns, then you can't be fixed here.
And now they're looking to bypass the Constitution.
This is all what Don Beyer is actually doing.
He's bypassing the Constitution.
And saying, look, we'll just use the power of the tax to actually do this.
It's interesting to me, though, that they didn't move this at all last year, really.
And again, Democrats want this issue, so don't be fooled.
You know, don't run out and if somebody, you know, sends you a, oh, send us money, we'll fight this.
You know, look, right now it ain't going anywhere.
And it ain't going anywhere in this House.
Okay, the Republicans will not put this out.
So just use it as the example that it is, and that is that the Democrats in Congress want to take your guns.
And it's just plain and simple fact of life here that you need to come to a realization that this is their reality.
So from Baltimore buying back guns, 362 guns, claiming it a victory, Okay.
But I made a famous statement that has been attached to me for a while now, especially in Congress when I was debating some of these issues.
And I made the statement that, you know, what makes you feel good doesn't always heal you.
And this may make you feel good.
And these liberals and these gun control advocates may be having all the best intentions.
I'm not trying to say they don't want to see an end of gun violence.
We all do.
But in the realities of what you're doing, it's not working.
It's like, you know, again, you know, thinking that you're going to, you know, just grow something in the middle of the desert without water and without seeds.
It's just not going to happen.
And you can say all you want.
I got faith and I'm going to do this and I'm going to do this.
But at the end of the day, nothing's going to change.
So, you know, as we deal with this, I think...
You know, we've got to come to the realization that this is what they want.
This is why they're going about it, whether they try gun buyback, which has been around for a long time, which again, criminals don't turn in guns.
You know, you look at the sort of end around where you have members of Congress who are blatantly ignoring the Constitutional aspect of the Second Amendment.
This is where, you know, it's just...
Again, you can't make this up.
You just can't make this up.
Another thing.
Here's an interesting finding, and as someone who is in...
This sort of time frame, if you would, of life.
There's now a new survey out showing that Americans are pessimistic about being able to retire.
And we've always joked about it in my household.
I've done so many different things that I'll never be able to retire.
My wife retired from teaching and she was an amazing teacher and she's having a wonderful retirement.
And I'm still going and having a ball at what I do.
But It's not just young people who are thinking they're not going to get a retirement out of the economy.
A new survey showed that a striking force of older working Americans no longer harbor aspirations of retirement.
The notion of retirement, which was one of the biggest bedstones of our society for many years, is fading away.
Secure and comfortable retirement necessitates diligent savings, yet many toil under the weight of insufficient funds, with the amount of money that it takes.
The poll was conducted by Axio and Ipsos a few weeks back, and it said that 29% of workers under age 55 boldly declare, I don't believe I will ever retire.
Most Americans who aren't retired, 62%, feel that Social Security will cover less than half of their expenses, and just 5% of retirees say Social Security covers more than 100% of their citizens.
Now, I do have an issue with this story.
Social Security was never meant to cover your retirement.
And if I could bring back FDR, put him on this podcast, he'll tell you that.
And it was meant as a social safety net to those coming out of the Great Depression and those coming forward to say, hey, we're going to give you something that can keep you from off the streets, keep you with at least food, and this is what will be there for you, but it was never intended to take over your retirement planning.
And so, you know, when my wife and I sit down and we look at long term, we think about getting out of debt.
We think about putting money away.
Those are the kind of things that we think about, you know, in terms of retirement.
And whatever, you know, age that means that we retire, you know, for me anyway, is going to be, you know, determined on, you know, how much we're doing to be good stewards of our resources.
So again, it's this idea that, you know, what is amazing to me in this story was, is that you take Social Security and you're saying, that is my retirement hope.
If that is true, then yeah, folks, you're going to probably have a problem.
Because it was never meant to be your retirement plan.
And it just wasn't.
And unfortunately, people have tried to make it part of their retirement plan.
And it's amazing to see.
There you go.
Another system.
There's also another poll that was talking about American, you know, the society's becoming a victim mentality.
And that is very true as well.
Everything's a victim.
You did this to me.
I didn't get her a fair shake.
One last thing here we'll touch on before I leave some of this is, you know, we thought that a change in the mayor's office in Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, would be a good thing.
Little did we know that Chicago, instead of trying to elect somebody who would try and get the city back in shape, elected left-wing mayor, very much leftist, Brandon Johnson, who blasted efforts.
He goes after this the other day to condemn young criminals when he rejected reporters' use of mob to describe dozens of looters and In an incident there in Chicago.
He gave a press conference following the arrest of 40 people between the ages of 12 and 20 for reckless conduct misdemeanors in Chicago's South Loop.
This was about a week or so ago.
It estimated that approximately 300 to 400 had gathered and began to partake in disorderly behavior and attempted to loot a convenience store.
Chicago Mayor provided updates regarding the situation but took issue after a reporter described the massive group as a mob.
Again, he scolds the reporter for using the term mob.
He says we should call them large gatherings.
Just because you call it something different doesn't change what it is.
You know, it's like CNN and others calling it peaceful, relatively peaceful protest while their reporter is in front of burning buildings.
The BLM protest of summer of 2020 will undoubtedly go down as some of the most amazing misrepresentations of fact by major news networks that you'll ever see.
But because they thought it would be politically correct to not accurately report, that's what they did.
And now you have the mayor of Chicago actually saying, well, it's not a mob.
This is just a large gathering.
Okay.
But it's really dependent on which large gathering are you talking about?
Are they in doing something that you don't want to talk about?
Are they doing something that you approve of?
Or is it something you don't approve of?
And again, that's the rotating discussion of this as we go on.
And if you don't believe this is actually affecting anybody, let's talk about Portland.
And the Portland lost over 14,000 residents resulting in 1 billion of loss revenue between 2020 and 2021. Again, Portland was one of the largest areas of some of these Debates that were going on and some of the mobs, the rioting, the breaking of windows, you know, having these on them in Seattle.
The crime exploded, their homicide record being broken two consecutive years in a row.
Portland lost $1 billion in revenue as basically people left.
And according to analysis of IRS data by Oregon Live, Multnomah County, where Portland is located, hemorrhaged 14,000 persons filing taxes, resulting in $1 billion in lost revenue.
Those who moved We're also relatively wealthy with a former residence holding incomes 14% higher than people who moved out of the area the year before.
Over the course of a year, the average income of the county resident who stayed declined slightly.
And, you know, Portland, who had been growing tremendously for 15 consecutive years, the article talks about, to become one of the fastest shrinking cities around.
Folks, people want to be safe.
You can have different political perspectives.
You can have different political attitudes.
You can have different political philosophies.
And Oregon is one of the more liberal states in the areas of Eugene and Portland and others, not across the rest of the state.
And that's fine.
Have those debates.
Have those arguments.
But when you let public safety, when you let people not feel safe going to work, when you're seeing your tax dollars spent on legalizing drugs, which even supporters of it say now that was a mistake without, you know, they say without the proper processes in place, but there was none of this going to be in place, and you're now putting people's lives at risk?
Then it's not a shock.
Okay?
You will still continue to see this.
Chicago is seeing it.
You're going to see it in Portland.
You're seeing it in California.
You're seeing all over the place that these are the kind of things that people, frankly, just don't get.
And if you're out there doing this, and if you're out there taking a route of non-accountability, you're taking a route of Basically being honest about the situation that you're in.
I think as we've talked about today, whether it's guns, whether it be violence, whether it be other things, then people will begin to leave the area that they're at and they will go to places where they do feel safe.
And if that's something that you just don't understand or you can't comprehend, then frankly, I don't know what to do for you.
And just a warning for those who are coming to Georgia and coming to other places here in the South, if you're coming from a liberal state because you don't like the conditions in that state, do not come to Georgia.
Do not come to the other states like Florida and Texas and other places and bring your ideas with you if you were the ones that was encouraging this.
If you voted for these people who now have let you down in those states to the point that you left it, don't bring those ideas elsewhere because guess what?
That's the part that made you leave.
We're very happy to have you.
We want you to come.
Experience freedom in states that allow freedom.
Experience states that allow you to have, you know, your rights and your constitutional rights and your right to bear arms, your right to make decisions.
Those kind of, come to these states, but don't bring your non- Freedom beliefs with you.
Those are the very things that you left.
Those are the very things that you need to be removed from.
So with that, folks, there's your update on things and the craziness of the world in which we see it.
Next time on the Doug Collins Podcast.
Looking forward to seeing you.
