You want to listen to a podcast?
By who?
Georgia GOP Congressman Doug Collins.
How is it?
The greatest thing I have ever heard in my whole life.
I could not believe my ears.
In this house, wherever the rules are disregarded, chaos and mob rule.
It has been said today, where is bravery?
I'll tell you where bravery is found and courage is found.
It's found in this minority who has lived through the last year of nothing but rules being broken, people being put down, questions not being answered, and this majority say, be damned with anything else.
We're going to impeach and do whatever we want to do.
Why?
Because we won an election.
I guarantee you, one day you'll be back in the minority and it ain't gonna be that fun.
Hey, everybody.
I don't know about you, but it's getting to be mid-February.
I mean, we're right in the middle of February, getting a little bit over.
We've been into 2023, if you can believe it, for almost, I guess, about eight weeks now, coming up on eight weeks.
And, you know, one of the things that I hear a lot about, and I read about it, and especially, and I've been doing a lot of flying, a lot of planes, you see these stories that are always the first year about goals, goal-setting, Are you hitting where you want to be in your professional life, your career, your family life?
Just the different areas.
And I've been thinking a lot about this.
And this is one I thought about today.
And we've had a lot of news stuff lately and going through.
But I wanted to just take the time today.
And this one is one of those that, as much as I deal with and struggle with, as I feel like most of our...
Most people do.
You always find that one or two people that can always say, here's my goals, here's my piece of paper, they keep it in their pocket, whatever.
You've seen those people.
They're so goal-oriented that everything they do is focused to that one goal.
You see this in sports a lot.
We've talked about it over the past weekend with the Super Bowl, you see it in the major championships.
You see those great players with that intense focus.
I mean, Michael Jordan, you know, in that intense focus off the court.
Deion Sanders, you know, saying that his best plays that he ever had were never on the field.
They were always in practice.
It was always that practice that got him to his goals and got him to where he was.
You know, he wanted to be.
And I think these are the kind of things, you know, Kobe Bryant, you know, again, that intense focus on making sure that when time to achieve and time to perform was there, they were at it.
But, you know, not all of us, in fact, most of us are not professional athletes.
Most of us are not, you know, high profile, you know, figures that You know, excel in something like that on a grand stage that everybody sees.
But the reality is, is all of us perform on our own stage.
We all perform in some ways on our life stage, our family stage, our business stage.
And we do so in many different ways.
And so what I want to do today is not...
I've listened to these kind of podcasts before, and I felt guilty at the end.
And I'm not wanting you to feel guilty at the end.
In fact, I want you to feel encouraged at the end.
Because this is going to be the motivating steps.
We've got things that you can do to reach your goals or to get a higher performance.
And not, I want to say from a guilt-free perspective, but from a perspective of saying, hey, we're all passengers here.
We're riding along.
These are some things that I've found that I wish I did every day.
I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I do all the, you know, 10 of these things every day or every week or every month.
But it is always good to take a moment, sit back, See what is going on in your life, and then prepare for the future.
Because here's what I found, and it's a correlation to the public political information and other information we talk about a lot here.
And what I see so many times from people in politics or people in media and others is they don't plan.
They just go by, this is what I think is wrong many times with our political landscape today, is that we only deal in what we can see at the moment.
We deal with the headlines as they come up.
I mean, your news is headline-driven, which is needed to be.
But people are not thinking beyond the headlines into saying, okay, how can we plan to make a different headline later?
And that's what I just wanted to...
Really what brought this up to me today is I see so much of today's policy being driven by the moment and not the long term.
And many times decisions that you make in a moment may not fit the long term goal or may not fit the long term perspective of what you do.
Want to be a part of as you go through your life.
So I just wanted to lay out some of these and say, look, this is not a beating session.
This is not one of those sessions where, you know, you're eight weeks in and you didn't keep your New Year's resolutions.
You know, a lot of people now, you know, won't even do a New Year's resolution.
I haven't done them in years, but I always do a sort of a self-analysis.
Where do I want to be this year?
And for me, this one is I've been traveling a lot, been doing a lot of thinking, and it's probably a good time for all of us to have this checkup.
So let's just start We're good to go.
Whatever you come up with, and this one is hard for me because I'm one of those that when I get motivated, I get thinking about it and I'm getting ready to go, I want to do everything all at once.
I want to just go out and buy equipment I need or I want to go buy out and get a new planner or I want to go get a new computer.
I want to just do everything I can to say, okay, I'm going to do as much as I can to accomplish the goal.
And the reality is goals and goal setting are not daily activities in the sense of that you'll accomplish the whole thing in a day.
But what you can do is take just one step.
So here's what I'm saying.
If you've had that issue in your life, and it may be a relationship, I mean, some goals are not always quantitative in the sense of gaining a better job or getting more money or making a new sale or whatever.
It may be in the sense of, hey, repairing a relationship.
Well, what do you do?
Well, The first thing is just take one step a day.
Take one noticeable step a day toward whatever you want it to be.
And again, it can be in any area of your life.
Take that one step.
What could that one step be?
It could be saying, okay, today I'm going to say, here's the plan for the next month in my exercise program.
I mean, everybody always gets trumped up on an exercise program.
Well, today I'm going to do push-ups every hour on the hour for five hours.
So I can do 10 push-ups, 50 push-ups today.
That's more than I did yesterday.
And, or I'm going to go out and walk outside for 20 minutes.
You know, that may be your one step a day that you look at.
It may be in your job, saying, what one step today can I do to improve my job?
And I'm going to get better in this part of my product knowledge, this part of our services knowledge, this part of the, take one step.
Too many times, you know, the old saying is, is it, you know, you want to eat, the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.
Well, so is, you know, planning.
So is getting your focus on where you need to go, taking it one step at a time.
And not just one step at a day, not one step, you know, just one step in a day.
But also then break that down a little bit further into really what the second thing is.
What one small thing can you do right now?
Now, this gets us into that perspective.
And if you're sort of watching on our Rumble channel or other channels, you can take the, say, what's my step going to be today?
What am I doing today?
And then what is one thing that I can do right now?
That gets me into that proper mode.
This may be writing a letter.
If it's a relationship, it may be, you know, determining when can I call this person and take them out to eat or go by or stop by their desk, you know, write them a note and give them a word of encouragement, whatever it may be.
But it's not just saying do just one step a day, maybe taking one small step and saying, OK, here's what I'm going to do.
But what is within that one small thing that you can do right now?
It's easy to say, here's what I'm going to do and then get lost in the actual action item.
Remember, goals and vision boards and all those things are great, but if they simply stay on the board, then they're not accompanied with action and you're not going to follow through.
And I've failed many, many times in my life in this.
It's easy to come up with what I want to in many ways, but taking those concrete steps to actually do it right then and say, okay, you want to do this?
What's your step?
I'm going to take that trip with your family.
Well, what about calling a travel agent?
You know, a travel nation.
My wife, by the way, if you want to do that, you can email me at Doug Collins.
You know, go to the DougCollinsPodcast.com.
There's an email button there.
You know, look, there's ways that you can get in touch with people who can help you on your travel dreams.
You want to know that?
Call Lisa.
She's my bride, but she can help you get there.
But if you're going to take a trip, you've got to plan it first.
You got to actually take a concrete step toward doing something right now.
So the first thing is, make sure that you take a step a day, make sure you're making progress, incremental progress each day, and then also, what is that one thing that you can do right now to get it?
Let's get past the actual goal setting and actually doing something, but how do you prepare for that?
Well, one of the ways is reading.
This is in motivational articles, reading stuff.
If you're interested in something, start reading about it.
There never could be a better age for you to learn about things that are going on, especially if it's an activity, a hobby, a new skill, a new job skill, learning a language, whatever it may be.
Our society today is just overflowing with ways that you can learn and make these new skills happen.
So just reading in general broadens your horizons.
I've always said that the world would be a better place if everybody could travel, if everybody could go around and see the rest of the world in the eyes of those who live in the different places instead of just simply...
You know, hearing about it, then it would be much better.
But the next best step is to read, is to understand and to listen to people who've either set similar goals to you or have similar accomplishments to you or something that you want to do.
Read and look at that.
Look for motivational articles.
I mean, many of you spend a lot of time on the internet.
Go to YouTube.
And look up and just put in motivational, you know, and maybe saying, hey, what can I do to get out and get going to help you back to those first two things that I thought about, you know, taking a first step and doing a concrete action?
Well, maybe you just need somebody to, or something you listen to, whatever motivates you, start doing it.
Motivational articles, motivation videos, motivational speeches, whatever it is, or reading.
Elon Musk, you know, once was asked, I think the famous question he was once asked, you know, how did he invent a rocket?
He said, I read.
He read about it.
Again, reading, and I can speak to this from personal experience.
As a kid growing up, and my dad was a Georgia State Trooper, we didn't travel a lot.
We went everywhere.
So for me, it was the radio and books.
I mean, I would listen to the radio, and it would take me all over the place, and I would read, and reading would expand my mind and expand my horizons.
Reading is so important.
I don't care what age you are.
In fact, more and more studies these days are showing that one of the ways to combat dementia and Alzheimer's and others is to stay mentally active.
Well, Mentally Active is, you know, reading, doing things out there that can motivate you toward your goals.
Now, one of the things, and I want to jump into this a little bit more, is not just reading motivational.
Sometimes it actually...
You know, especially if you have a specific goal.
So like, say you're a salesperson and you want to make a bigger sales goal than you ever had.
Or you're wanting to improve your hunting, your fishing, you're wanting to learn how to get a better job, be a manager.
Well, there's a couple of things that I want to emphasize here that can be put together and can sort of, that you might need to consider.
One is a mentor.
If you don't have somebody in that area, that field that you look up to that can help you along the way, then maybe that's something you can do.
John Maxwell, a leadership teacher for years now, always talked about taking somebody out to lunch and paying them for their time.
He made a comment that he would take them to lunch and give them $100 to sit and let him ask questions of them.
You know, as you go on, find somebody that's willing to answer those questions that you can talk to and find out how to do it.
And if they're already doing it, maybe it wouldn't be a mentor, but maybe be a one-off person.
If you see somebody else in your office that is really, and this may be difficult if you're competing against each other, so to speak, but somebody who, if you're in sales and is really good in sales, well, then go ask them how they do it.
You know, just ask them.
It doesn't have to be a long-term mentoring thing.
You hopefully will find that mentor who can help you through a lot of things in life.
But it could be a one-off in a sense or another off that says, okay, this person is really good at communicating.
How can I get better?
Ask them questions.
Listen to their answers.
You don't become them, but the principles underneath how they operate, I'm sure, would be something that could help you in your leadership skills, your sales skills, your parenting skills, whatever it may be.
This is so important to have that.
Many people are learned by reading, learned by visual, but there's a lot of people who learn by actually having the actual shown and taught to us as we go.
The other thing is that after you've sort of taken this together, you started taking this ahead and looking at it.
The other one is, and this one is an important one.
Don't keep your goals or your ideas hidden.
And I know this is tough because the first time, and I hear a lot of you groaning right now, you're on the treadmill or you're riding along and you're listening to this and you say, no, no, I don't want to make it public.
Well, you know the reason you don't want to make it public is because once it's public, then there's some accountability.
And the accountability is that somebody will remember you said it and ask you about it.
So, for instance, if you said, and I'll use an easy example here, I'm going to run a half marathon this year, and at the end of the year, they say, well, how did a half marathon go?
Well, you know, you say, well, you can either tell them you ran it and here's how you did, or you can tell them, well, I never got there.
You have to make an excuse.
Putting it out there, though, then puts pressure on you to do it.
And it also makes you review your progress or change your goal.
Now, this is something that can happen.
You can put it out there.
You can get into it.
You can work it.
And for whatever reason, it's not working out.
But by putting it out there, having others hold you accountable is one of the easiest ways to move forward in your goals.
Because you're going to say, somebody's going to ask me about this.
Something's going to get...
I said, and I wanna make sure that I have an answer if someone was to ask me.
Sometimes you actually need to have people in your life that say, hey, look, I'm doing this and I need you to keep me accountable.
This could happen not only in exercise or business or life, it could be in your personal life, it could be in your personal conduct.
There may be something that you're wanting to change.
Maybe you want to quit drinking alcohol, Maybe you want to quit drinking Diet Coast or quit drinking Monsters or whatever it is.
Or, you know, stop eating red meat or eat more red meat.
Whatever it may be.
But if you have somebody who'll ask you about it, say, hey, how's it coming on that?
Are you working out?
Are you doing it?
Those are kind of motivational tools that can give you not only progress, but also can hold you accountable.
So when you hold each other accountable, this is a big step.
But public commitment is an important part.
Even a biblical concept, God told the prophets to write it down.
Why do they write it down?
Why do they put markers out there?
Because they wanted it to know, this is a marker, this is something I'm shooting for, and I'll hold myself accountable to this.
So, as you go forward, these are people that are not going to criticize you, they're not going to be the ones that Are your enemies necessarily?
They're the ones that you allow into your life to give you that swift kick sometimes when you need it.
You accept it from love.
You accept it from someone who cares about you that will hold you accountable.
But if you never make it public, what's happening is nobody knows about it.
You can always say you accomplished it.
It's about like shooting an arrow at a blank target.
You always hit the bullseye if there's no target up there.
Have a target up there.
Let people know what you're doing.
Then not only they hold you accountable, but you do the self-check to review how you are doing.
Here's a different one for a second.
It goes back to another thing.
One of the things in dealing with goals and dealing with new accomplishments is you're going to have little victories along the way that are not victories at the end.
In other words, there are going to be things that you do well and you've accomplished a new task, a new skill, something like that.
What you need to do in those moments in this process is Enjoy that success.
Take a moment.
If you hit an initial halfway to your sales goal, then take yourself out for an ice cream or whatever is your favorite thing to do to reward yourself.
Say, hey, we did it.
Accomplishments need rewarding.
This one, though, I will tell you, is hard for many of us, including myself, because we're always looking to the next thing.
Sweet mentor of mine, a sweet lady of mine who worked for me for years, used to say, Doug, you accomplish goals, but you don't ever celebrate those goals.
I'm going to encourage you to take time to energize, refresh, and maybe take a moment and don't stop.
Because, you know, you're still in the process where if you do accomplish a goal, definitely, you know, celebrate that because that is encouragement, reinforcement to say, hey, if I start this and more in the future, then it'll actually, you know, I can actually accomplish it.
So you got to, you know, take the time and just look at where you've been.
Sometimes looking back is the best judge of where you are currently.
Looking back at where you started and looking back where you are now is one of the best judges to say, hey, this is actually working.
It's actually a form of encouragement.
It's a form of saying, hey, I was here and now I am here.
I'm handling these situations better.
I'm better in my relationships.
I'm better at my golf game.
I'm better at my, you know, whatever it may be.
I'm better at my hunting, whatever it is, and say, look, I'm better than where I was and that's worth celebrating.
And again, I'm not going to say that's easy because I don't do it well.
But this is what I'm putting out there for you to say, hey, if you're looking at how to accomplish goals and how to maintain those as you go forward, then this is something you need to look at.
The other thing is try something new.
Don't always be locked into one way of doing it.
Build a habit, build something that works, but try something new.
Listen to a podcast you don't listen to.
Listen to this podcast and share it with somebody else.
You know, go read a new book.
Read an author that you've never heard of.
Listen to a song that you've never listened to on the radio before.
Do those kind of things that always increases your mind.
One of the things that we get trapped into and it harms us is that when we're always so focused on one thing without A variety, at least our mind becomes very stale.
And so trying something new actually just gets you out there, lets you go in the process of saying, hey, this is something we can do.
And I'm not just always in the same rut.
I know one of the things that I hate, and I'm going to relate this to a diet.
I've had to change my diet due to some reasons here recently, and I have noticed that it's monotonous because I'm trying to cut back on the caffeine.
I'm trying to cut back on other things and be healthier in what I do.
And you get into the same pattern.
So you say, okay, this works, and you don't try anything else.
It may work.
But if you don't have some variety, if you don't try something new, then your mind and your body will eventually say, will become bored, they'll become hesitant, and you will find yourself moving away from your goals because you have made it into such things where it becomes a burden.
And not something that you can move forward.
So try something new.
Get a habit.
Try something new.
Don't be caught in a rut because what will happen is you'll begin to hold in that rut and you'll not be trying new things.
You're not going to be accomplishing something going forward because there are many ways that you can accomplish your goals.
The question is, how can I best get there?
Um, I talked about this a little bit earlier, but I want to go back to it is, is, you know, motivational pep talks every day, you know, find a note, find something, put it on your phone, you know, say it over and over whatever it is, but say, Hey, I'm moving toward my goal.
I'm getting better.
And especially, especially, and I put this back in here in times of when your goals are not being met, when you're not hitting where you want to be.
Um, It may be time to say, hey, I can still do this.
Let's reassess.
Go back to what we talked about earlier, that reviewing your progress, holding accountable, asking for help.
All of these things work together.
So if you get to the point in your process and the goals are not being met as you want to see them, then maybe you need to just take a moment, motivational pep talk.
Say, hey, let's get back out there.
Let's go back to these.
Review what I've already done.
Review, or am I doing something?
Am I taking a step to do it?
Am I talking to people who know what the plan is and finding out how they do it?
Am I reading about it?
Am I learning?
Am I growing?
You know, go back and reassess.
That motivational help will always get you there.
Another area that I do well some days and I do terrible some days, and this is something that I think will help you, is planning your day.
And whether you do it the night before or the day of, you know, list those things out that's got to be accomplished that day, things that you need to start on that day, and the things that maybe you need to do a little bit and then put aside.
Those are the kind of things, if I could...
If I had one area of my life that I want to do better, this would be it.
I will accomplish a lot of things in a day sometimes, and none of them would be on what I needed to do list because I'm inbox-driven, phone-driven, message-driven, and many of us are like that.
It's not something to be ashamed of.
It's something just to grow from because if you'll never accomplish the goals in life, if you're always being moved away from the goals based on the moment of the day.
Now, things do happen.
Things come up.
Calls do happen.
Emails come up, and you've got to take care of them.
But if that becomes the norm, then there is no room for every day doing something to improve yourself and doing something to improve the bigger picture.
I call it also the little rock and big rock syndrome.
If you don't prioritize the big rocks in the jar first, if you ever take a jar, You're amazed at how much you can get in there.
If you put the big rocks in first, put the little rocks in, and then you can go forward.
But if you don't make room for the big things in your life, the big goals, the relationships, the family, the job, those kind of things, then you will let the little pebbles fill up the jar before you can ever get the big rocks in there.
This is something you need to work on, plan, and just keep going until you succeed.
And it's not always easy.
Change is hard.
I've heard different stories on this, but I believe it is a I've sort of settled on this.
If you do something every day for 60 days, it will become a habit.
It will become something that you do.
It is something that your mind, and it takes that long.
Some for 30, some for maybe less, some for a little bit more.
But if you don't do it regularly, don't do it regularly, don't do it regularly, then it's going to become something that you will, it'll be easier to put off and easier to forget.
So you got to make this persistent.
You got to do it every day and keep yourself You know, motivated.
This is my plan of action.
And I tell you what, I'm gonna work on this issue.
Hope you will work on it.
Because I think once you have that plan and you're moving forward, you'll see greater things in your life.
Last one though, make sure that you take time for yourself.
Goals and new things and all can become all-consuming.
If you don't take time to step back from whatever it is you do for your family, for your job, and just say, hey, I need to take the weekend and I'm gonna energize.
I'm gonna do something that's fun.
I'm not going to worry about other things.
I'm going to make sure that my body, my spirit, my mind is all energized.
That's what you need to do.
And look, goals are tough to obtain sometimes, but stay positive.
You don't like to be around people who complain and whine and moan all the time.
And your mind doesn't either.
When you're complaining, whining, and moaning about why something can't get done and how something can't get done, this is, again, it's a goal destroyer.
It's a relationship destroyer.
It's a lot of things.
So one of the things you got to do is stay positive.
Stay persistent.
You know, do the things that are there to keep a joy about getting up and going each day.
So, as you're taking a step now, starting this Monday, I mean, many of you look at this on Monday mornings, or you listen to it throughout the day, you're listening to it on the first of the week.
Look at your own goals.
Maybe you didn't set a resolution and that's fine.
I didn't set any true resolutions for this year either, but there are things that I want to accomplish.
And as I was going back over this for my own life, I said, you know, this is probably something that a lot of people struggle with.
We always get in there.
But the first thing is for goals, for your next adventures, for whatever you want to go to, goes back to the very first thing in this, is you take it one day at a time and find something you can do to start right now.
You start right now, hold yourself accountable, find those mentors, find the reading material, find the motivational articles, find the things that keep you going so that you celebrate successes along the way, then you will be able to accomplish your goals, be able to start a fresh year in February of this year, and by December, who knows where you can be.
