CSPAN - King Charles III Visits Harlem Aired: 2026-05-02 Duration: 35:41 === Books Bring People Together (02:02) === [00:00:00] Books really are good for us. [00:00:03] They also have a magic way of bringing people together with our ability to transcept any barrier. [00:00:12] It's for that reason that I already feel at home with you here in these hallowed rooms, where your mission is to inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our communities. [00:00:26] I would be delighted if my reading room could join the grand tradition of cultural exchange between our two countries and if we might all work together to spread the word that as Alastair Cook and John Steinbeck said, there are never enough books. [00:00:45] Thank you. [00:01:02] King Charles III visited New York City's Harlem neighborhood during his time in the U.S. Their British monarch visited a neighborhood space where children learned how to garden. [00:01:12] The King spoke with the children, fed chickens and interacted with community members. [00:01:55] He's our executive, Cole Engel. === Empowering Youth Through Music (15:49) === [00:02:02] Right hand, maybe I'm just very brave. [00:02:20] Very similar in theory. [00:02:25] I was at a peaceful business ago. [00:02:40] The way you go to the music crushed in the conversation. [00:02:45] But I don't see this plan for the best of the people, and you'll see that as much as we can. [00:03:00] I'm making him a little nervous because, does that happen a lot? [00:03:25] In the summer, I'm getting after school and self-teaching. [00:03:28] This year, which is the colour of the Yes, [00:04:03] I was the first. [00:04:06] I was not at the time. [00:04:08] And what are you doing now? [00:04:10] Well, now I'm a licensed social worker and I'm currently being able to be a social worker. [00:04:15] Is that my interaction? [00:04:20] Actually, I'm done with all of my homework. [00:04:22] I made it to do it ahead of time. [00:04:26] Yeah, we gave her a slip today. [00:04:31] So I'm thinking about you helping us. [00:04:35] Yes. [00:04:36] Whenever Miss Tony actually come in, Nicole, Janine, I'll always want to help the kids, help the community, any way I can. [00:04:42] She's a celebrity with our... [00:04:44] No, but you name relate most to her because exactly and that's the circle and that's what matters. [00:04:51] Living breathing through a possibility right in front of you is a mess. [00:04:59] Oh you're in the station. [00:05:08] Oh not here. [00:05:09] Oh now it's good. [00:05:12] So before we even know everything you hate at your cycle I want to introduce you to Rob Biden. [00:05:21] This is the top today just happened. [00:05:27] I found directly back. [00:05:31] Our partners from Sherry. [00:05:33] Evan Eller is very nice to meet you. [00:05:35] He's very nice to meet you. [00:05:36] Rude, Rudy. [00:05:37] No, please. [00:05:38] Hi, everyone. [00:05:39] Very nice to meet you in the car workers. [00:05:41] And where is Genesis? [00:05:45] Excuse me? [00:05:46] And our partners from Genesis. [00:05:50] Hi, Massey. [00:05:51] How are you? [00:05:52] Good to see you. [00:05:53] So we're affordable housing developers. [00:05:56] No, go ahead. [00:05:57] We're not quite working on the East Wing on Woods or Castle, but we do housing for workforce people who are working people, like affordable. [00:06:06] We've partnered with Hong Kong for almost 10 years now. [00:06:10] We provide some water and electricity. [00:06:12] In our basement, they're growing mushrooms. [00:06:15] They have a really cool pollination farm. [00:06:17] We're just really happy to be supporting them and they partner with people. [00:06:22] Do you bring mushrooms in Law? [00:06:24] No, we make our own lots. [00:06:28] Corky Grimes and Zelda. [00:06:31] We inoculate them. [00:06:32] They pull us back and take it over there. [00:06:34] Well, congrats to some of us to be great. [00:06:37] Yeah, so we can do a five-pound lot. [00:06:49] Now we give them the money to play. [00:06:52] These guys play a big part of that. [00:06:55] So we run one of the largest food recovery organizations in the United States. [00:07:00] And I'm sure you're familiar with how much critical estate waste for this guy. [00:07:05] In the United States, we throw away at least 40% of our food supply. [00:07:09] And we work with some of the largest producers that's been taking their excess delivery to organizations across the world. [00:07:18] And this has been an incredible partnership. [00:07:22] 5,000 free meals of fresh beer sales for them. [00:07:30] Yes. [00:07:51] You can just guess the difference between us to make it. [00:07:58] That's exactly right. [00:08:01] That's it. [00:08:01] That's it. [00:08:02] That's what we drew. [00:08:03] We went as huntsman as the largest party in America. [00:08:07] And it's incongested, so we know they don't know what those are. [00:08:12] Yes, that's right. [00:08:14] We could end with the world on it. [00:08:16] We would really love that. [00:08:19] Absolutely. [00:08:20] We're yes, our dream would be to expand it in the UK and anything in the United States. [00:08:27] There's no reason why you can't cover entirely just what we had as well. [00:08:38] That's exactly right. [00:08:47] Yes, it's kind of hard to speak. [00:09:07] So today we'll be actually planning some fresh meat legs or fresh lettuce in some milk path as well. [00:09:16] We'll be planning in both of these bullshits. [00:09:20] Of course. [00:09:21] And I would like to inform you about most of the hydroponics as we go along. [00:09:28] Hydroponics, we also teach kids in schools while also outside. [00:09:34] But if it's a rainy day, we use hydroponics to learn a bit about on the inside. [00:09:41] And it's like space friendly. [00:09:44] It's friendly on the space. [00:09:46] And today we'll be learning, we'll be planning some lavender. [00:09:51] And kids, if you can, grab your lavender. [00:09:56] And we'll be actually naming the lavenders. [00:10:01] What would you name? [00:10:04] Is that crazy? [00:10:04] Don't dig it up. [00:10:06] I will use the charity litter. [00:10:09] Sunshine? [00:10:12] And I will be dating mine. [00:10:14] Huh. [00:10:15] Lily. [00:10:16] Lily on the prairie. [00:10:18] There you go. [00:10:18] Because why name something on the opposite side? [00:10:23] And so let's dig something up. [00:10:25] It looks like a hole. [00:10:28] You guys will be grabbing this, right? [00:10:29] And you see where the plant? [00:10:31] You're going to dig a little hole. [00:10:33] You want to end it like that? [00:10:37] And like that. [00:10:39] Yeah, that's perfect. [00:10:40] You want to put your lettuce in there now too? [00:10:41] Okay. [00:10:42] You got it? [00:10:43] Absolutely. [00:10:44] And then you can cover it right now. [00:10:48] Just like we did yesterday. [00:10:49] Good job, good job, good job. [00:10:52] Now you're going to grab your plants. [00:10:56] Once you stick that on, right? [00:11:00] You're going to grab it right by the roof, right here, okay? [00:11:04] And then you're going to take it out and then you're going to plant it all. [00:11:09] You're going to put it deep into the dirt. [00:11:11] Yes. [00:11:12] And then you're going to use. [00:11:13] Got it? [00:11:16] Then you guys are going to use the rest of the dirt. [00:11:17] That's right. [00:11:20] I mean you're with and go around the plant. [00:11:28] You did the perfect job of jumping. [00:11:34] You got it up next? [00:11:36] Great job! [00:11:37] Great job. [00:11:38] And now we're going to get away from it. [00:11:39] Perfect. [00:11:41] Watch out, watch out. [00:11:47] And here we meet the famous ladies. [00:11:50] But please let me introduce our partners, the New York Public Library. [00:11:57] Chicken Exercise. [00:11:59] Chicken X will read all the books about the chicken. [00:12:01] Chicken X. [00:12:02] I know everything there is to know. [00:12:04] No, we're very fortunate to work with Harlem early in the story time here. [00:12:07] So at the farm on Saturday, we talked about the family. [00:12:10] The library comes in and plays books and we do it right out there in the beautiful library over here. [00:12:17] Perfect place to read. [00:12:19] But not on a Wednesday though. [00:12:22] On a Saturday. [00:12:24] A little more of a weekend. [00:12:26] I did do it personally. [00:12:28] Exactly. [00:12:32] No, it's not. [00:12:34] We are the Aska Foundation where we provide songwriting. [00:12:38] Lovely to meet you, Patricia Leonard, the executive director. [00:12:42] What we do is support the next generation of extraordinary composers and songwriters and lyricists. [00:12:48] We also believe that music education should be access for everybody. [00:12:53] And that's why being here with Harlem Brome today is so important to us as we provide guitar instruction and jumbo drumming, which is bringing everyone together for a piece. [00:13:03] It's all about community and creativity. [00:13:06] So you do it here? [00:13:08] We do it here, yes. [00:13:09] People in the building. [00:13:10] Here and in the middle. [00:13:11] And we do a showcase here in the summer. [00:13:14] You've been finding some really interesting talent. [00:13:17] Absolutely. [00:13:18] Yes, we do. [00:13:19] Then can you help to encourage them all to write cool things? [00:13:23] Absolutely. [00:13:24] And even within our group, within our talent development, people like Lynn Mell Miranda, who wrote Anilton, in our orbit, you know, with education and talent development, we really are crafting the next generation that's shaping the music world. [00:13:38] And we know how important arts are. [00:13:40] You're good at scratching. [00:13:42] Yes, yes, yes. [00:13:43] And these kids here are the next generation. [00:13:48] Can you imagine? [00:13:51] Can you play instruments? [00:13:52] Musical instruments. [00:13:53] Not this age, but this age. [00:13:55] A little older. [00:13:56] Do you know what I mean? [00:14:01] Where is he to say? [00:14:02] In North Carolina. [00:14:04] Really? [00:14:05] Maybe I haven't played. [00:14:06] I managed to get there yet. [00:14:10] I know how to play instruments. [00:14:12] I know how to play the job. [00:14:14] Do you? [00:14:14] Oh, the jumping. [00:14:15] Yes. [00:14:16] Do you get any music at school? [00:14:20] You heard the jazz program, remember? [00:14:23] Yeah, that's why I say. [00:14:24] Yes, we brought the jazz. [00:14:28] I haven't played yet. [00:14:30] Really? [00:14:31] So, wait, you didn't know where I came in here? [00:14:37] So this is your first time here. [00:14:39] You come often to see it. [00:14:42] But they, on a trip, they bring us here. [00:14:44] Do they? [00:14:44] Yeah, we can find it. [00:14:45] You go up to the chickens, too. [00:14:47] I went into there before the feet and chickens. [00:14:51] So what do you feel? [00:14:53] The lettuce, right? [00:14:56] Yeah, vegan chickens. [00:14:57] Jerry vegan chickens. [00:14:58] Yeah. [00:14:58] Jabe corn. [00:14:59] They're only small, but mostly vegetation. [00:15:02] And they did the first round of our compost. [00:15:06] And this is Alana. [00:15:07] What they've really like is lifted everything from the kitchen. [00:15:11] Yeah. [00:15:12] This is Alana. [00:15:13] She's been with us as kindergarten. [00:15:16] And this Asana, our hydroponic developer. [00:15:20] Hydroponic. [00:15:21] Yes, yes. [00:15:22] Self-talk. [00:15:24] Right here on all the ground ground. [00:15:27] Yeah, we grow year-round as well. [00:15:30] We don't have no LED lights. [00:15:32] We use the sunlight. [00:15:33] It's right next door in the next one. [00:15:35] But we do have two channels over here where you were planting. [00:15:38] Yeah. [00:15:39] A little bit. [00:15:39] This way. [00:15:40] The other way. [00:15:40] Yes, I asked him for the longest word of that. [00:15:44] Even on a Wednesday. [00:15:45] Even on a Wednesday. [00:15:47] We have two palms there, don't we? [00:15:50] Yeah. [00:15:51] And the king. [00:15:54] Yes. [00:15:56] Okay. [00:15:58] No, we make sure our poop is protected and we also have good neighbors that welcome the chickens because we give them the eggs for free for charge as well. [00:16:09] And we give it all to the whole community. [00:16:11] Volunteers, interns, everyone. [00:16:14] There's no roosters. [00:16:15] Roosters are not allowed in New York City because of the hens are totally good pest control and first boundaries. [00:16:24] I like them. [00:16:25] Do you? [00:16:27] Did you like eggs? [00:16:31] Do you like both eggs? [00:16:32] Come on, Helen. [00:16:37] So have you been regretting your things here as well? [00:16:50] Let me give them all that one time, okay? [00:16:52] All right, that's all I can get. [00:16:54] No problem. [00:16:57] This is for you. [00:17:09] No, not the brown ball now. [00:17:13] Oh, I'm sorry. [00:17:18] Would you like to feed the chickens? [00:17:20] Yes please. [00:17:21] Yes please. [00:17:27] You just better die. [00:17:31] Isn't it Mr. King Charles? [00:17:33] My mom said you're not Mr. King Charles. [00:17:38] I told her. [00:17:39] My mom said you're not Mr. King Charles. [00:17:42] I told her. [00:17:44] Eat it. [00:17:45] Can I get one? [00:17:48] Thank you. === King Charles Feeds Chickens (07:02) === [00:17:52] King Charles there at a community garden in Harlem. [00:17:56] Some information on the king. [00:17:58] He has broken with monarchs of the past, notably Queen Elizabeth, and being more outspoken on certain issues, including environmentalism. [00:18:06] King Charles mentioned the topic during his address to Congress, saying that leaders, quote, ignore at our peril the collapse of critical natural systems. [00:18:16] He has worked in the UK to advance environmental protections, with Politico reporting that he has secured pledges from CEOs to invest in pro-environment operations. [00:18:58] Yes, they love it. [00:19:01] They love it. [00:19:02] They know. [00:19:03] Come on, So you guys come this way. [00:19:14] These are lovely boxes. [00:19:17] Yup, holding.
