Good morning.
It's Thursday, January 8th.
Yesterday in Minneapolis, a 37-year-old woman and American citizen was shot and killed during an immigration and customs enforcement operation.
ICE officials say she weaponized her vehicle and attempted to strike agents.
But Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Fry says video of the incident does not support that claim, and he's calling for ICE to leave the city.
The shooting has sparked protests, conflicting accounts from federal and local officials, and renewed debate over how ICE conducts operations in U.S. communities.
This morning, we want to hear your reaction to the Minneapolis shooting.
The numbers are Democrats 202-748-8000, Republicans, 202-748-8001, and Independents 202-748-8002.
You can also send a text to 202-748-8003, include your first name in your city-state, and you can reach us on social media, facebook.com/slash C-SPAN and X at C-SPANWJ.
Welcome to today's Washington Journal.
Let's start by taking a look at the latest that we have from Secretary of Homeland Security Christine Noam.
This was from yesterday evening.
kristi noem
I want to reiterate first with all of you the facts of what happened today.
At 10:25 a.m. Central Time, immigration and customs enforcement were carrying out lawful operations here in Minneapolis.
Because of the adverse weather that Minneapolis has seen in recent snow, one of the vehicles became stuck and ensnared in the snow.
Law enforcement were attempting to push out this vehicle when a mob of agitators that were harassing them all day began blocking them in, shouting at them, and impeding law enforcement operations.
ICE officers and agents approached the vehicle of the individual in question who was blocking the officers in with her vehicle, and she had been stalking and impeding their work all throughout the day.
ICE agents repeatedly ordered her to get out of the car and to stop instructing, obstructing law enforcement, but she refused to obey their commands.
She then proceeded to weaponize her vehicle, and she attempted to run an law enforcement officer over.
This appears as an attempt to kill or to cause bodily harm to agents, an act of domestic terrorism.
The ICE officer, fearing for his life and the other officers around him and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots.
He used his training to save his own life and that of his colleagues.
He was treated at a local hospital, has been released, and is now with family.
I encourage the American people at this point in time to pray for him, but also to pray for the deceased's family and her loved ones.
mimi geerges
That was Secretary Christine Noam, and this is CBS News.
What we know about the fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis, ICE agents shot and killed a 37-year-old woman Wednesday morning during an operation in Minneapolis.
Shooting comes as the Trump administration has deployed about 2,000 federal immigration and investigative agents to the Minneapolis St. Paul area as part of a crackdown on the state's fraud scandal and immigration.
DHS Secretary Christine Noam and President Trump described the shooting as self-defense, but the mayor and governor disputed that.
It says that Minneapolis police responded to a call reporting to the shooting at about 9:30 a.m. local time to South Minneapolis.
Found that a woman in a vehicle had been shot in the head.
Firefighters rushed the woman to a medical center where she died, according to the city.
It says she is identified as 37-year-old Renee Goode, citizen, a U.S. citizen, and it says that city leaders said Good was a legal observer of federal actions in the city and wasn't a target for an ICE-related event.
Old Dominion University said that she graduated from the school in December of 2020 with an English degree.
That's at CBS News.
And we will take your calls, especially if you're in Minneapolis.
Do give us a call.
Let us know how things are there.
Here's William in Little Rock, Arkansas, Independent Line.
Go ahead, William.
unidentified
Yes, I looked at that whole shooting because I was watching the news.
And that first one was in a grid truck that I didn't reach for that lady.
And she backed up.
And they didn't do that with their hands on their gun.
But the one that opposite on the other side in that white look like a white SUV, first thing he did when he jumped out, he went in and grabbed him, put his hand on the same side they were on, on the outside thunder, and had his hand on his gun.
He was intending to shoot someone.
And they got these people in these uniforms.
You don't know who they are.
And some of them are uneducated.
They just showed that on news earlier, how they're uneducated.
They're not the best of the best.
They're the worst of the worst.
And they cover their mask up.
And it's ridiculous when they shoot that woman.
There's no way that she was trying to run over him.
She was trying to get away from him.
And he came out and shot three times.
Boom, boom, boom.
And that's ridiculous.
I can understand when they're shooting black people.
They used to be always shooting someone of color, but now they're shooting white women.
And that's ridiculous.
And people admire Trump and his administration.
That's ridiculous how they're doing, people, because all they're doing now is distracting from the Epstein case.
mimi geerges
Let's hear from Ray in Pennsylvania.
Democrat, go ahead, Ray.
unidentified
Yeah, hi, Mimi.
I have a couple of things to build on.
That first caller.
He said that they don't know who these ICE agents are.
And my opinion is that they're members of the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, violent persons who have been convicted or indicted on crimes.
And the reason they keep their faces hidden is that people identify them.
They'll know that these are who these people are.
I'd imagine some of them are even members of the people who Trump pardoned from January 6th.
And I think they only joined ICE because they have an opportunity to commit violence on black and brown people and do it with no accountability.
Second, I have a suggestion for you.
When one of these Call of the Orange monkey calls and says they agree with their cult leader, have them narrate the film of the murder and point out where the agent was viciously run over and still managed to get up and shoot into the car three times at point-blank range after being viciously run over.
Have them narrate the film and point it out to the rest of America where this happened and see what they do.
But that's what I have.
mimi geerges
All right, Ray.
And here's Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Fry.
He was at a news conference yesterday.
Here's what he said.
jacob frey
To ICE, get the fuck out of Minneapolis.
We do not want you here.
Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite.
People are being hurt.
Families are being ripped apart.
Long-term Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy, are being terrorized.
And now somebody is dead.
That's on you.
And it's also on you to leave.
It's on you to make sure that further damage, further loss of life and injury is not done.
We're going to be working towards justice as quickly as we possibly can right now.
And justice is what we've all got to get.
mimi geerges
That was Minneapolis's mayor.
And this is Lucas in Pennsylvania, Republican line.
Go ahead, Lucas.
unidentified
Hi, good morning.
I'm calling from Pennsylvania.
I'm really sad to see another tragedy happen.
I am just so concerned.
And I don't want to take away from the fact that a woman lost her life yesterday.
That's tragic.
Anytime anything like that happens.
However, I can already see how this is being played out.
I'm having a lot of deja vu with Memorial Day weekend 2020.
You already have people on both sides coming out, already forming opinions when the facts aren't truly known.
As far as I understand it, the vehicle was going towards the officer.
A vehicle can be a lethal weapon, just like a firearm can.
I hate that this happened.
It's horrible that things like this happen.
However, I just, I don't care for the fact that people use this as an excuse to cause violence to cause even more discontent in a country that's already suffering from way too much of that.
mimi geerges
All right.
And this is what President Trump said on Truth Social.
He says, I have just viewed the clip of the event which took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
It is a horrible thing to watch.
The woman screaming was obviously a professional agitator, and the woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE officer who seems to have shot her in self-defense.
Based on the clip, it is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital.
Situation is being studied in its entirety, but the reason these incidents are happening is because the radical left is threatening, assaulting, and targeting our law enforcement officers and ICE agents on a daily basis.
They're just trying to do the job of making America safe.
We need to stand by and protect our law enforcement officers from this radical left movement of violence and hate.
And that officer has, as you heard from Secretary Noam, has been released from the hospital.
This is Elizabeth in Brooklyn, New York, Democrat.
Good morning, Elizabeth.
unidentified
Good morning.
So sorry, I don't know why that I'm going to turn down the TV.
Thank you for having me.
So, you know, obviously we're horrified and there must be justice, but we have to do better.
And I'm just wondering, like, where are the solutions?
You know, we must have solutions.
We have to, you know, we can't just stand for this.
I just feel like as a country, at least among my peers, it's like we're becoming numb.
You know, I spoke with a colleague yesterday and it's just like, you know, like, oh, you know, everyone's upset, but what can we do?
mimi geerges
What do you think?
I mean, what are your thoughts on that, Elizabeth?
unidentified
Well, I mean, I think that we all have to, you know, we can't be passive.
You know, I do not believe in violence, but I believe that we have to use our voices.
We have to use, I mean, I'm a bit at a loss right now because it's overwhelming.
I mean, it's just, we just started 2026 and here we are.
And this is someone that always has hope, and I believe that, you know, there are more good people than bad.
And I believe that we just have to, you know, come together as a community and just protect one another.
I mean, this is a time when, you know, people really need to come together as opposed to be isolated.
mimi geerges
All right.
And this is foxnews.com with this.
Left-wing groups mobilize protests immediately after fatal ice shooting in Minneapolis.
It says AOC calls Minneapolis ICE shooting a murder and urges arrest of agent involved.
And this is from the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Thousands gather to memorialize women killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis.
This is a picture there of that memorial.
It says the mother of the deceased driver identified the woman as Renee Nicole Goode, age 37.
Video of the shooting shows agents near the vehicle as Good reversed and then pulled forward.
One agent appeared to fire multiple rounds into the car.
I said the agent acted defensively.
And we're getting your thoughts and reaction to that this morning on the Republican line in Pennsylvania.
John, you're on the air.
unidentified
Yes, good morning.
If you clearly watch the video and you see the first vehicle try to get around her, she moves forward as to try to obstruct that vehicle.
Then when the other truck comes up, the two agents get out to approach.
Okay, you can tell the road is slippery.
It's full of ice.
You can see her wheels spinning when she tries to go forward, but she backs up when the officer tries to get her out of the vehicle.
She's under arrest.
She's obstructing justice.
Okay, so she has to stay there.
She backs up.
You can see the argent sliding on the ice.
You can see her hit the agent in front.
And he has to do what he has to do to survive.
There's a saying called FOFA.
Okay, you know what that means?
mimi geerges
Means Wendell in Delaware, Line for Democrats.
Good morning.
unidentified
Talk about what happened last night on the TV like the girl.
I think it's so.
I've never seen a president that wasn't really now.
Somebody had got killed and everything.
He talked about it.
He's glad that the agent did what he did to get out of the way.
I don't holler to see why he ain't get it the way it.
And that's like Chris Como last night and Stephen Smith.
That's it.
She went around them.
She didn't even try to hit him.
And the man was trying to grab the door.
I know he told her to stop, but she kept going.
And he went around there and got in the front, and the other guard was in the front and shot, was shooting at the window.
They said, like, how come he couldn't shout the tow or something?
Because it couldn't go that fast nowhere there.
And, like the other guy said a while ago, I think it's been nobody but them ones that he let the party on them guys.
That's why they got the masks on.
And it don't make sense.
So that man don't care what he's doing because he just knows he ain't going back in that no more nowhere.
So he just tried to destroy this world before he leaves out of there.
mimi geerges
And here's Charles, a Republican in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Go ahead, Charles.
unidentified
I'll put a very simple point.
A retired police officer, a municipal, all law enforcement, according to the Supreme Court in the United States, can lawfully and authoritatively tell a person to get out of their vehicle for officer protection.
And to refuse that order, we see what happens yesterday tragically what happened.
It's for officer safety.
That's why the Supreme Court ruled that way.
And one of the worst situations is to be confronted with a vehicle as a danger to the officer.
And even if they shoot or don't shoot, you have very little control over what that vehicle is going to do.
You might hit the person and might control the vehicle, might prevent it from injuring you as an officer, or it may not.
mimi geerges
So, Charles, Charles, you said you're a retired police officer.
Would you have reacted as those officers did?
Did you find that that was a reasonable reaction?
unidentified
If you're in fear of your life, it's a reasonable reaction because you need to defend yourself.
Now, the investigation will get the facts of the case.
But first of all, we have the authority to tell you to get out of your car for officer protection.
And if you refuse, then God only knows what's going to be going on.
mimi geerges
All right, Charles, let's hear from the Minnesota governor.
Here is Tim Walz in a portion of his news conference yesterday.
tim walz
We've been warning for weeks that the Trump administration's dangerous, sensationalized operations are a threat to our public safety, that someone was going to get hurt.
Just yesterday, I said exactly that.
What we're seeing is the consequences of governance designed to generate fear, headlines, and conflict.
It's governing by reality TV.
And today, that recklessness costs someone their life.
All of you saw a video in your eyes.
We have a chaotic situation caused by the largest deployment in American history of federal agents into a community with no communication to locals.
We had a chaotic situation where an individual is in their car, shot and killed.
And so, look, I want to be very cautious here because Donald Trump will make this about me.
He will make this about politics.
This is about public safety, and this is about normalcy.
To Americans who are watching this, if you're in Portland or you're in LA or you're in Chicago or you're wherever they're coming next, stand with us.
Stand with us against this.
This was so preventable, so unnecessary.
And I don't know.
I hope.
Maybe we're at the McCarthy moment.
Do you have no decency?
Do you have no decency?
We have someone dead in their car for no reason whatsoever.
And I don't want to be right about this, but I said if they do this, they're going to create a chaotic situation where someone innocent is going to get killed.
And they did it.
And now we hear more political rhetoric.
Enough.
Enough is enough.
And so to Minnesotans, don't take the bait.
Do not take the bait.
Do not allow them to deploy federal troops into here.
Do not allow them to invoke the Insurrection Act.
Do not allow them to declare martial law.
Do not allow them to lie about the security and the decency of this state.
And let's let this investigation play itself out.
Let's make sure we protect our neighbors.
I encourage you to use your First Amendment rights and all of your constitutional rights, but do so in a peaceful manner.
mimi geerges
And here's Peter, a Democrat in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Good morning, Peter.
unidentified
Good morning.
You know, I am so disgusted with this country.
You know, as a black man that grew up in the era, I'm 67.
I'm close to retirement.
And, you know, my grandkids are Hispanic.
And I worry for them.
You know, their dirty little secret is these MAGA morons wouldn't care if these people had blonde hair and blue eyes.
You know, somebody harasses one of my grandkids, who are half Puerto Rican, who are U.S. citizens.
I'd come after them.
I'd run them over with the car, you know.
And it's just so disgusting.
We know what the problem is.
They lied to themselves, but they don't want to tell the truth.
If they had blonde hair and blue eyes, they wouldn't care.
Trump said it himself.
Norway or Sweden, those are the people he wants in this country.
mimi geerges
Let's hear from Tina next in Michigan, Independent Line.
Good morning.
unidentified
Good morning.
What happened to this poor girl was horrible, and it should have never happened.
However, nobody's saying what's really going on, what really happened in this situation here.
This woman and her partner were being paid by protesters, and they would go from protest to protest, and they were being paid by the local protesters.
They were from the girls from Colorado, and they came from lived in Colorado.
Then she went to Missouri.
The license plate on the vehicle was from Missouri.
They traveled to Minnesota at the beginning of these ICE raids, and they would go and travel to the head of the before the ICE would come to the area.
And then, when ICE came to the area, they would get the wife would get out of the hot car and they would tape it and they would antagonize it.
mimi geerges
Sorry, Tina, where are you getting all this information?
This is on the victim?
unidentified
Yes.
mimi geerges
Okay, so tell me where you got that so we can look that up.
unidentified
Okay, that I got this through local area witnesses.
This was being from a person who was on the other side of the vehicle where she got hit.
mimi geerges
Wait, wait, wait.
unidentified
That you say where the red car got hit and where the red car got landed, the house that was outside of there, the witness asked the girl's wife what was happening.
And the girl's wife said they weren't from the area and they didn't know any people from the area and they were being paid for and staying.
mimi geerges
And they're being paid by who?
unidentified
By local protesters organizers at the beginning of the ICE raid.
mimi geerges
And what's the name of this organization that paid, allegedly paid her?
unidentified
I'm just telling you what the witness was asking the woman.
Directly after the accident, because the woman was covered in blood and she had her dog with her and the person who's asking her, are you okay, are you okay?
And they said no, we're not from the area.
We don't know anybody.
We're staying with friends.
We are being paid for for this incident.
mimi geerges
The woman that got shot said that the woman, the wife, the wife of the victim, the wife of the victim, the wife of the wife of the victim who got shot in the car okay, let's go to John Next, who is in Arlington Virginia, republican.
Go ahead, John.
unidentified
Yeah, i'd just like to note that how you see this depends on your political leanings, because we've had multiple videos of this incident right now and and you can see like clearly with your own eyes what happened, why they're like two completely disparate points of view and it all depends on, I think, in this, in this climate, what your bias is and your political leanings.
And i'd just like to note that systems come so close to the fifth year anniversary of january 6th.
Just look at the Ashley Babbitt situation and uh, what happened on january 6th, you know was, was her uh, was her death justified or was the actions taken leading to her death justified, and that depends on your political leanings.
Just look at this scenario in that context.
Let's just say that this wasn't like an ice um in raid conducted during the Trump administration, but it was basically carrying out an arrest warrant for a january 6th rioter during the Biden administration, and the video and everything remains exactly the same, but the situation is politically reversed.
The outrage that you see right now would be incomplete reverse as well, with the Democrats screaming saying that this is completely justified and the Republicans screaming that this was murder.
So basically, what the facts seem to not matter as much as what your political bias is, and that's the situation and that's the world that we live in now.
mimi geerges
Okay, John and uh, here's Politico with more information.
Uh, on the victim, the woman killed by ice agent in Minneapolis was a mother of three, a poet and new to the city.
Her ex-husband said that she had just dropped off her four Six-year-old son at school.
Says um, she was a U.s citizen born in Colorado.
Appears to never have been charged with anything involving law enforcement beyond a traffic ticket.
Says uh, that she described herself as a poet, a writer and a wife and a mom.
She was currently Experiencing Minneapolis, displaying a pride flag emoji on her Instagram account.
A profile picture posted to Pinterest shows her smiling and holding a young child against her cheek, along with posts about tattoos, hairstyles, and home decorating.
Robin in Cleveland, Tennessee, Democrat, good morning.
unidentified
Good morning.
I would just like to say when the Indians said they speak with fork tongues, these are a group of people, white Americans, Republicans, that lie to theirselves about theirselves.
They're the same group of people that spun all these lies about January the 6th, even though we watched it on TV.
We seen that man was not even hit.
So when white Republican America decides that they don't want to be a bunch of big liars, then we can come together.
You can't come together with a group of people who lies roll out their tongues like water.
And that is who these people are.
They're liars to the point that it's demented.
And they're everything that God hates.
God hates liars.
So I'm trying to say Republican America, the GOP, the Grand Old Party, used to be the moral majority.
That was a lie.
They've been living lies all their lives.
So we're in between the good and evil.
So if everything you say, everything that rolls out your mouth is a lie, like the independent woman that pulled out a story that nobody know nothing about but her, then you know what we're dealing with.
We're dealing with liars.
That man is walking right now.
Where was he hit at?
Because I've done been pent before between two cars.
That man is walking without a limb, but you know, forked tongues.
Thank you.
mimi geerges
And here is Secretary of Homeland Security, Christy Noam.
This was earlier in the day and Wednesday.
This was the initial reaction.
Here she is at the southern border.
kristi noem
You asked about a shooting that we just had in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
It was an act of domestic terrorism.
What happened was our ICE officers were out in enforcement action.
They got stuck in the snow because of the adverse weather that is in Minneapolis.
They were attempting to push out their vehicle and a woman attacked them and those surrounding them and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle.
An officer of ours acted quickly and defensively shot to protect himself and the people around him.
And my understanding is that she was hit and is deceased.
We're continuing to gather more information, but this goes to show the assaults that our ICE officers and our law enforcement are under every single day.
These vehicle rammings are domestic acts of terrorism.
We're working with the Department of Justice to prosecute them as such.
We will continue to protect our ICE officers and in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies as well.
You've seen me in the last couple of days deploy over 2,000 more officers to the Minneapolis area.
And in the last two days, we've arrested hundreds and hundreds of dangerous criminals, not just fraudsters who stole from the American people billions of dollars and put it in their pockets and enriched their friends from overseas and themselves, but also individuals who committed acts of murder and rape and trafficking and drug exploitation and child exploitation.
So we're going to continue to do our work.
And I want to remind everybody that the act like we saw today of using a vehicle to try to kill an officer and his colleagues and the other people around him is something that every politician, every elected official, everyone in this country should be able to rally around and say that it is wrong.
And that sanctuary cities and sanctuary states that protect individuals who do that should no longer be allowed.
That those individuals that are in leadership positions in these sanctuary jurisdictions need to work with us to make sure that every single person that's out there enforcing the law can be safe, but also so that all of our citizens can continue to be safe too.
mimi geerges
Back to the calls to Cassie in California, Independent Line.
Good morning, Cassie.
unidentified
Good morning.
How are you?
Thank you so much for having me on.
So I just got a few things to say.
So the first thing I wanted to say was my condolences to the lady who lost their life.
America is in a very interesting place.
It took me a minute to kind of figure out exactly what I wanted to say, but I will say this.
And this is to us as Americans as a whole, and especially white America.
How can you say you love the Creator, but you hate his creations?
That does not make sense to me.
America, I need you to understand what we're going through because I feel like I'm in the movie idiocracy.
You convicted a man of a crime and then elected him as your president after he did what he did with the first time he was in office and he had his gang, his literal his gang, whoop your butts up and down the White House.
You turn around and elect him as your president again, and then he cleaned your bank accounts out.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Starved all your children.
All the homeless and every disabled people need their help.
Took all their money and everything.
Right.
mimi geerges
So, Cassie, let's stay focused for now on our topic, which is that shooting in Minneapolis.
unidentified
No, it all comes down to it.
And that's my closing list.
Let me just land my plane.
When you did that, after you did that, you were now in a place where you were okay when it was after the black people in ICE and the slave patrol were going after the African Americans and as we are black Americans.
You were okay when it happened to the Indians and the Asians and even Hispanics.
You sat around and you did nothing.
Now it's at your front door and it's a problem.
See, we can't blame each other at this point where we are in America.
We have literally, at today and age, just watched the lady get killed in our face.
What are we doing?
We're sitting around doing nothing about it.
I am so sorry to that woman's family, to your other guests that just came up here and tried to normalize.
This is crazy.
You're normalizing some of the most barbaric behavior I've ever seen in my life.
mimi geerges
All right, let's hear from Jim in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Republican.
Go ahead, Jim.
unidentified
Yeah, can you hear me, Mimi?
mimi geerges
Yes, we can.
Go ahead.
unidentified
How are you?
Yeah, just I understand the overly emotional people that call this show and all the things like that.
But, you know, about the Republican liars like me and all the other people and all the accusations of racism and what we did to the Indians always comes up.
Most of us Trump supporters are working class people.
I started off in Pennsylvania and I dealt with illegal immigration for 30 years of my life.
I often used to call Steve Scully and talk about my travels out here.
I came out here because the overrunning of our towns, the loss of my trade, making money, dispossession, what happened to white guys and black guys.
I came out here to find a better life and to get a better wage and to work in the trade I started out in.
Displacement, none of the white people on the liberal side ever seem to care about their own working men and women who are displaced by these invasions.
mimi geerges
Jim, again, let's focus on the shooting in Minneapolis.
Are you saying that it's justified?
I mean, what was your reaction?
You tell me.
unidentified
First of all, let me start with saying that something we all know.
It's a horrible thing that happened, but these things happen on our streets every day in America.
Thank God this woman was not black.
If she was black, Minneapolis would be on fire.
This woman would be a George Floyd type of martyr.
But she's a white woman, and her name will be forgotten, unfortunately, very shortly.
I feel bad about what happened to her.
But once again, I have known personally people who've been killed by illegal aliens back in Pennsylvania.
I know three people that I worked with.
mimi geerges
I understand that, Jim, but this is an ICE agent killing her.
So let's focus on that.
This isn't street crime.
As you say, this happens all the time in America.
Yes, street crime does happen, unfortunately.
unidentified
Yeah.
Okay, I guess I'm being, I hate to use the word waxing philosophical, but I'm trying to state that the reaction of white liberal Democrats is always if they only have this same concern that they have for, I mean, you're reading all this information about this woman.
She's a poet.
She's this.
And you humanize her.
And all the many high-profile examples of white women who are black women who have been raped and killed by El Salvadorians or Guatemalans, there's nothing but a collective yawn from the Democrat side.
C-SPAN never talks about them.
No politician gets on the phone and calls the parents of the people killed.
There's an old saying from Mark Twain that the liberal cannot take his own side in an argument.
Well, the white liberal can't take his own side of his own race or his own country.
And I find that to be so dangerous for our survival.
mimi geerges
All right.
Bonnie, in Alexandria, Minnesota, Democrat.
Bonnie, how far is Alexandria from Minneapolis?
unidentified
It's about 130 to 150 miles.
mimi geerges
Okay.
And your reaction to the shooting?
unidentified
You know, after listening to that horrid Christine, I mean, I'm just speechless over that.
I heard that yesterday.
And then that stuff that Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Oh, my God.
I mean, I'm convinced he's insane after reading that.
You know, it was something that just could have been avoided.
I mean, the guy, the ICE agent didn't have to be hanging on the door.
I'm sure he scared the hell out of her.
And, you know, they could have got her license plate number.
He shot in the vehicle three times, right in her head.
mimi geerges
David in West Virginia, Independent Line.
Go ahead, David.
unidentified
Yes.
We hear all these hateful people calling in there, blaming the administration.
And people's got the right to protest, but they don't have the right to assault police officers, obstruct justice.
And the leaders of these states, especially Minnesota, they're encouraging this.
And you've seen, even when the local police showed up, they're throwing snowballs.
They're throwing ice.
You know, the Constitution doesn't give you the right to assault law enforcement officers.
So some of the blame for this has got to go to the leaders of Minnesota, the governor and that stupid mayor that let them burn down the city during the George Floyd incident.
You let these people ramble on with their hate, and that's what it is.
It's hate.
Thank you.
Have a nice day.
mimi geerges
Let's hear from Senator Chuck Schumer.
He's the minority leader in the Senate, and he reacted to the shooting.
Here he is.
unidentified
Senator Sherman, do you have any comment on the shooting in Minnesota, the ice ball shooting?
chuck schumer
Well, I saw the video.
It just turns your stomach.
We need a quick and full investigation to get to the bottom of this.
But when you have these ICE agents all over the streets of our cities without any cooperation with local law enforcement, local communities, tragedies, horrible tragedies, killings occur.
unidentified
Favor for ICE should suspend their operations as the mayor has called for?
chuck schumer
Well, I've never been for ICE going into our cities, period.
It doesn't belong there.
And the mayors and county executives and others throughout the country believe they can handle it much better themselves than having people from the outside come in.
What's your message for the protesters down there?
unidentified
Should they remain civil?
chuck schumer
Well, of course, there should never be violence, but there should be protest as an American right.
And when things like this happen, people feel the need to protest and their right to do it.
We salute them doing it.
unidentified
What do you mean by the shooting?
DHS is saying that this was an act of domestic terrorism by the person who was shot.
What do you make of that?
chuck schumer
We need a full investigation.
unidentified
Should Democrats use the appropriations process to try to rein in DHS and ICE?
chuck schumer
Well, the appropriators on the Homeland Security Committee are working on some things like that, I believe.
mimi geerges
And this is what we got on text.
This says, people make very bad decisions all the time, and impeding law enforcement in a lawful operation is one of the worst.
This whole sanctuary system craziness runs counter to the actual federal immigration laws and sadly creates the environment for these types of situations.
What do you think of that?
We'll hear from Mike in Oak Ridge, Missouri, Independent Line.
Good morning.
unidentified
Good morning, Mimi.
Let's start with puppy killer gnome there saying that the man followed his ICE training.
Well, I saw reporting last night on CNN that they've cut the training from six months to 47 days.
If that's true, then that is ridiculous.
Secondly, that guy that supposedly is in the hospital or whatever, you see him walk over to admire his handiwork.
There's nothing wrong with that guy.
And I'd like to say, thirdly, if you watch that video, you look at that left front tire on that vehicle.
It is turned away from anybody that's going to get hit.
Then you look, and the guy takes three steps to be able to be in position to shoot the woman in the head.
This is murder, straight-up murder.
Donald Trump is culminating.
This is a culmination of Donald Trump's little game he's playing.
And I'll tell you what, with what's going on in Venezuela and all over the world that he's turned all our allies against us, I'm 65 years old, and I am ashamed to be American with this piece of garbage in the White House.
mimi geerges
All right, let's talk to Jim, who is in Hudson, Florida, on the Republican line.
Good morning.
unidentified
First of all, ICE is only doing the job that President Trump was elected to to get the illegals out of the United States.
And second of all, if the street is blocked, why isn't the local police there saying you can't block our streets?
You need to move on.
Why is the ICE agent doing that job?
If the local police would have been there to go out and say, you can't block streets, you need to move on.
But the ICE agent had to get out because that woman is a known organizer of trying to cause problems all the time.
They knew who she was.
It's a shame she was shot.
But the local police, if they'd have been there and walked up and said, no, you need to move.
These cars, you can't block our streets.
You need to move on.
And then that incident wouldn't have happened.
And thanks for taking my call.
mimi geerges
Ted, you're next in Washington line for Democrats.
unidentified
Yes.
Hello, Lenini.
I got a simple solution.
I'm a lifelong Democrat.
And let them go into the jails and get the criminals out.
Then ZICE wouldn't be on the street shooting people.
Wouldn't that be sane?
Tell me, wouldn't it?
Wouldn't that be sane?
mimi geerges
We got your opinion on that.
And here's Daniel in Ohio, Independent Line.
Good morning.
unidentified
Good morning.
I think a lot of people are missing the point, like when it comes to why they're even there to begin with.
Why are the armed agents there to put that woman into that situation to begin with?
Did you hear Christy Noam give all these stats of all these crimes and stuff they're solving?
But where's actual facts to back up anything that she's saying that they solved all that?
Like when you're looking at the house and you're looking at the street, like all the houses on that street, like what are the stats for why they're there on that street to begin with?
Like what did they solve there?
Like you had 2,000 agents there for what reason other than just to be malicious.
And then like when you're watching the video, you watch it with sound on.
If you first see the girl, like she goes to wave the ICE agent by, and then you got the other agent coming up telling her one thing, like to drive on.
And then you got the other agent telling her, like running up to the door.
And you got the third agent just runs up and shoots her in the head.
And she's being told, like, she's being told two different things.
And then you got the third dude to just shoot her.
So a lot of times when people play it on the news, they play it without the sound.
But if you listen to it, the sound and you first watch it with, like in the beginning, like she's waving them by before they hop out of the car and just run up on her.
But I don't think she ever should have been put in that situation to begin with.
All right.
If the fraud is so rampant and all these crimes are so bad, where's all the stats?
And where's all the physical proof to back up all these claims that they're making that they're doing solving there, other than just being there to cause disruption for the election coming up?
mimi geerges
And here's some information on ICE from GovExec.
It says this, ICE more than doubled its workforce in 2025.
The Trump administration has reconfigured its onboarding and training process to quickly deploy agents into the field.
This is the caller had asked about training.
It says the federal agency at the center of President Trump's harsh crackdown on immigration enforcement has more than doubled its workforce.
The DHS announced saying it took only four months to more than exceed its year-long goal.
ICE now employs more than 22,000 officers and agents, up from 10,000 when Trump took office last year.
The hiring surge marks a 120% increase in the workforce since July when Congress passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and provided $8 billion for ICE hiring.
That's at GovExec.
That's from January 5th, by the way, if you'd like to read the rest of the article.
Jim in Percasi, Pennsylvania, Republican line.
Good morning.
unidentified
Good morning.
Thanks for having me.
I just wanted to say that I feel that the ICE people are doing their jobs.
If the woman, sorry to say, I don't like anybody getting hurt, let alone killed, but she was doing what she thought was right for herself, but she wasn't following the orders of the police.
She blocked it ICE, she blocked them off.
She caused her own problems.
I'm sorry to say.
The problem is, people have been, the police have been saying for years, stop or I'll shoot.
But they never shoot.
So what happened is people figuring, well, they're not going to shoot.
I'll do what I want.
Sorry to say that doesn't work anymore.
Too many ICE people are getting killed, or should say, being attacked and damaged and hurt.
And as far as their masks are concerned, they need to wear them to keep the cartels, I guess, from finding their addresses and going after their families.
These things I believe, and I believe in the United States, and I believe in our president.
He's finally backing up what the United States says they're going to do.
Unlike the Democrats who kept backing down.
Anyway, that's my input.
mimi geerges
All right.
And another Republican in Pennsylvania, Shirley, you're on the air.
unidentified
Good morning, and thank you for taking my call.
Now, I'm sitting here watching this this morning.
I started to watch some of it last night on Hannity and then I was interrupted.
Okay, now, first of all, if this woman would be out getting a real job, a real job where she had to work, instead of in that car looking for trouble, she might still be alive.
The other thing is, the governor there should already be in jail.
And the mayor, who got up there with that filthy language, it sounds to me like he should be in the cell next to him.
That place there is upside down.
And now they brought in people to try to correct the situation.
And here's what happened.
So you know what?
That woman brought it on herself.
I feel bad that she was shot.
And I feel very bad for her family.
But let's just face it.
Go get a real job.
Quit looking for all this nonsense, getting paid to go out and cause trouble for these people that are trying to enforce the law.
This is nonsense.
Thank you.
mimi geerges
And Shirley, this is what that political article says about her work.
It says her ex-husband said she had primarily been a stay-at-home mom in recent years, but had previously worked as a dental assistant and at a credit union.
Randy, Democrat in Florida, you're on the air.
unidentified
Yes.
I'm going to say that what we're seeing here is just horrible.
And for some of the comments that these people are saying that, oh, this woman got what she, you know, deserved, but I feel sorry for the family.
You don't feel sorry for the family.
You're just lying to yourself.
And the problem is, these agents are not trained to do what they're doing.
You're looking at almost like commando style.
You just run up and grab the door.
You just tell somebody to get out the car.
You throw people down that's Americans.
You're not going after the cocktails.
You're not going into the cities where all the gang people are at, the bad people that will shoot back at you, that will fight with you.
You're targeting the weak.
And this is not what this country is made of.
This country was standing on to take care and help the weak.
And when people say that the migrants are taking their jobs, well, I don't see no American people out there picking tomatoes or picking strawberries.
It's all immigrants.
And I'm really sick and tired of hearing these people how about they're taking our job.
You're not taking the job.
But you don't have the reason to kill American citizens like they did on this street.
And then justify it from the White House to the whole bunch of them.
They're really tired of it.
mimi geerges
All right, Randy and Bob from Michigan said the ICE agent who shot and killed a mother is a domestic terrorist.
There is no justification for what happened.
Renee Nicole Good should be alive today.
Obstructing law enforcement should not be a death sentence.
And Tony in Long Island said: when a police officer gives you a lawful order to exit your vehicle, you must comply.
It's the law.
Here's Frank, a Republican in Delaware.
Hi, Frank.
unidentified
Good morning.
I just like, I'm calling in reference to what I've seen yesterday happening in Minneapolis.
And you often wondered why the Democrats, why they even have a party, because they have no common sense.
I mean, they're just morons.
When you got a vehicle, I don't care who it is, coming at you and you have a gun, what are you going to do?
Are you going to sit there with your thumb up?
You know what?
Or are you going to react?
If you don't react, you're going to get run over by a damn truck going 50 miles an hour.
You've got to do what common sense tells you to do.
You fire the damn gun, man.
Wake up.
mimi geerges
Steve in Vermont, Independent Line.
You're on the air.
unidentified
Yes, thank you.
Turn off my TV here.
I just want to say that the shooting was unnecessary.
Obviously, you know, the driver was agitating the police, and I think the police were stressed out.
But, you know, they could have shot the tires out.
There's no reason for a police officer or an ICE officer to shoot somebody in the head.
And the other thing I think they should look back on why in hell did our previous administration let in illegal people, millions of people into the country.
It's just not right.
And now we're dealing with the ramifications of that.
But I feel sorry for the woman that got shot and her family is unnecessary.
And I think somebody needs to be held accountable because obviously she was not trying to run the guy over.
Thank you very much.
Bye.
mimi geerges
In Southfield, Michigan, Democrat Tony, good morning.
unidentified
30 years with the Detroit Police Department, those guys did not know what they were doing.
A, this guy gets out the car, he grabs the door handle, and when the car goes into gear, he actually held on, and you watch his feet slide.
Second of all, the guy that shot the woman, you never put your body in front of a moving vehicle.
You always move around it.
So that tells me right there, their training is not what it should be.
The guy that called.
mimi geerges
Yeah, and what's the training that, I mean, what should they have done, Tony, according to your training?
unidentified
My training, there was ample room.
If that pickup truck wanted to go around that black vehicle and get around it, they could have done it.
To try to stop a moving vehicle with a bullet never works.
You get out the way of the moving vehicle.
And now you see what happens.
mimi geerges
And do you feel like in the heat of the moment, that officer that was in front of the car, do you think that that was a normal reaction?
Or like what?
Give us a little bit more information about that.
unidentified
You know, on the police department, there are always officers that are a little more aggressive than others.
We call it Superman syndrome.
And the same officers doing the same dumb stuff.
And as senior officers, we try to critique it because we see what's going to happen.
Sooner or later, this clown's going to hurt somebody or get himself hurt.
And I guarantee you, when you look at this guy's history, he's been involved in something similar before.
Never fails.
They do something dumb all the time.
In the training, if you follow it, you'll go home at night.
mimi geerges
All right.
Let's talk to Perry, Republican line in Georgia.
Go ahead, Perry.
unidentified
Look, when it comes to situations like this, I'm a truck driver.
You never know what the person is going to do.
If you see an ICE agent or a police officer, you need to stop your car.
If they're trying to stop your car, stop your vehicle because they don't know what you're going to do.
They don't know if you got a gun.
They don't know if you're going to hit them with a car.
You got to respect the law.
Now, this woman could have saved her life if she had just stopped the car, comply with the officers, open the door, showed her license, and all, and follow routine.
But maybe she panicked.
Maybe she was going to hit them with the car.
But one thing we know is the ICE officers are under attack, and they want to go home to their family, too.
So it's either you or me in this situation.
They got to protect themselves.
We don't know what these people are going to do.
All right.
mimi geerges
And we'll take one more call.
Christina, Illinois, Independent Line, you're on the air.
unidentified
Good morning.
Oh, you know, we've all heard the phrase, you know, they're not the judge, jury, and executioner.
Well, these people evidently thought this guy thought he was, you know, the complainant, the DA, and the judge, jury, and executioner.
If someone is obstructing, then you get their license, you know, and then you arrest them later.
You don't use deadly force out of instinct.
You know, the lady was trying to do a turnaround, a K-turn, to get out of the situation.
And why would they jump out and try to yank her door open?
I mean, it just makes no sense, and it's sad.
And I'm really tired of hearing, you know, I'm sorry she got hit or shot, but, and then carry on like she had it coming.
Thank you.
mimi geerges
And that's it for this segment, but there'll be more time later in the program during open forum to weigh in on this topic if you didn't get the chance.
Coming up next, with the Senate set to vote on War Powers Resolution for Venezuela, we'll discuss Congress's role in declaring war with Sarah Burns, author of The Politics of War Powers.
