Washington Journal Mallory Wilson

Mallory Wilson, White House reporter for The Washington Times, confirms President Trump’s vow to retaliate against attacks in Australia, Brown University, and Syria’s deaths of three Americans, citing his focus on harm to civilians and military personnel while questioning Bashar al-Assad’s support. She describes a "working relationship" with newly inaugurated Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara, despite his recent White House visit, hinting at future cooperation. Trump may engage with the GOP’s Friday healthcare bill—lacking ACA subsidies—but Wilson doubts passage this week due to Democratic opposition and its insurance-centric approach. Meanwhile, an August-leaked executive order could reclassify cannabis from Schedule I to III today, though details remain unconfirmed, signaling potential policy shifts amid political tensions. We're going to just pause on our open forum calls.
If you're on the line, go ahead and stay on the line and we'll get back to you shortly.
But in the meantime, we're going to speak to Mallory Wilson, a White House reporter for the Washington Times.
Mallory, welcome to the program.
unidentified
Good morning.
Thank you for having me.
mimi geerges
And the president was speaking out yesterday on the attacks in Australia and at Brown University.
He also mentioned the three Americans killed in Syria.
He has vowed retaliation.
What are you hearing about that?
unidentified
Yeah, so the president, like you said, has vowed retaliation.
We'll definitely be hearing about that this week.
And, you know, he's pretty serious about these things, especially when it comes to military members and civilians harmed.
He's always spoken out against people being killed.
And we'll just see.
He says the Syrian president wasn't on board with it as well.
So we'll just see what happens this week when he talks about it.
mimi geerges
Well, speaking of the new Syrian president, Ahmed Al-Shara, he was in the U.S. just last month visiting the White House.
What are White House officials saying about that relationship?
unidentified
I think it's a working relationship and the president loves to make deals and be as friendly with people as possible.
And I think we'll see him try his hardest to work with him in the future.

And on Friday, the House GOP has released a new health care bill without an ACA premium subsidy extension, tax credit extension.
What is the President Trump, what is President Trump thinking about this?
And is there any indication that he might get involved this week?
unidentified
You know, he probably will get involved.
Like you said, it doesn't have the ACA tax credits, so it's not likely to get support from Dems, not likely to pass this week.
He wants money to the people.
He has said he wants money to the people instead of the insurance companies.
And that bill just does not do that.
So we probably will hear inklings of him speaking with House Speaker Mike Johnson, probably other GOP members in the House, and they'll probably discuss whatever he feels is the next step.
We'll see what he does.

And it's been reported that President Trump could sign an executive order reclassifying cannabis.
Can you tell us about that and what we should expect?
unidentified
Yeah, so it's not finalized.
He first spoke about it in August, but it's not finalized.
Reports have said we could see it as early as today, but it doesn't appear to be on his schedule.
It would remove marijuana from a class one to a class three drug, which removes it from a class like this of drugs like heroin.
And House lawmakers here just wrapping up debate on a number of bills, including legitimate have a lower impact for abuse.
