Speaker Time Text

Watching my great friends on C-SPAN.
C-SPAN is televising this right now live.
So we are not just speaking to Los Angeles.
pedro echevarria
We are speaking to the country.
unidentified
C-SPAN, Democracy Unfiltered.
We're funded by these television companies and more, including Buckeye Broadband.
Buckeye Broadband supports C-SPAN as a public service, along with these other television providers, giving you a front row seat to democracy.
pedro echevarria
Steps from the White House, that's where we're located today at a place called Pebble Beach.
That's the shot that you can see there.
People wandering in and out, and you'll see that throughout the course of the morning as well as we take your calls on the first 100 days.
Republicans, 202-748-8001.
Democrats, 202-748-8000.
Independents 202-748-8002.
Gene is in Michigan.
Democrats line.
Thank you for waiting.
Go ahead.
unidentified
Yeah, I almost don't know where to start.
Due process is one thing.
We were called in earlier instead of you are a criminal that does something illegal.
You don't deserve due process.
Well, I haven't committed any crime, say.
I'm sitting in my bedroom, laying in my bedroom sleeping at night.
All of a sudden, they bust my doors down.
And they rush in, arrest me, throw me out in a prison someplace, and then send me to El Salvador.
mike in chicago
You know, I don't even have the opportunity to defend myself, even though I haven't committed a crime.
unidentified
I'm in a jail somewhere where I can't get out.
Can't speak to anybody.
So why is that?
Why do they do this immigration policy that way?
They say there's too many people out there to arrest.
The courts can't handle it all.
But that's what the way the rule of law is.
It's there for a purpose.
It's there because the founders of our country put it there because of the revolution.
I could have just accused somebody of something and they could have came and got them and locked them up, hung them, or whatever.
pedro echevarria
Okay, Gene in Michigan, this is Michelle in Ohio, Republican line.
unidentified
Good morning.
Hey, I just want to tell you that I have everlasting gratitude for President Trump and his cabinet.
It's full transparency.
He's doing what we want him to do, is to protect our nation and to save our children from the pedophiles out there.
And he's righting the wrongs of our nation.
And these Democrats should be ashamed of themselves.
Thank you very much.
pedro echevarria
South Carolina, that's where George is independent line on the first 100 days.
unidentified
Thank you, J.J. Good morning.
I think President Trump is doing a fantastic job, even though he has to fight the media and a few liberal judges to get things done.
But he's doing what he said he was going to do as far as the border.
He's trying to make the country great again.
I'm happy with how things are going.
And yeah, it's going to be rough for maybe a year or so.
But I'd rather sacrifice a year than four more years of the nonsense that we went through last four years.
So anyways, that's my opinion.
Thank you.
pedro echevarria
From Florida in Havana, Cecil, Democrats line.
unidentified
Good morning, sir.
How are you doing?
pedro echevarria
I'm well, thank you.
unidentified
Yes.
I'm sitting here listening to everyone talking about the economy and the immigration.
What I'm thinking is it is a due process that you're supposed to have when you come in, come in, or get ready to leave or get a green card.
We've got students coming in for school and everything.
But you snatching them up and taking them out just because they have freedom of speech.
Freedom of speech is supposed to be one of our amendments.
And it should be, it is definitely wrong for them to come in and snatch up people, but just because they have freedom of speech.
The next thing is, it kind of reminds me how they did us when they took us from Africa and brought us over here, just snatched us up and just came and put us into work to do things here.
We built this America.
We did a lot for America.
A lot of black people, Latinos, brown people did a lot for America.
It is time for us to stop going backwards.
Stop trying to take us back and try to move forward.
If we could play basketball, football, baseball, softball, all together and get along and win championships, why should we have to go backwards and not have a nice time enjoying each other as neighbors, as friends, just because we have a different race?
I don't think that's right.
I think we should do much better.
We need to do more better than what we're doing now.
That's all I got to say.
pedro echevarria
Thank you.
From Ann on our Republican line, who joins us from Massachusetts.
You're next up.
unidentified
Yes, good morning, Pedro.
Hi, how are you this morning?
pedro echevarria
Well, thank you.
unidentified
Oh, great.
Hey, I just want to say, I've been watching you here.
I like where you're sitting today with all the signs on Pebble Beach there.
It's a wonderful day.
I am so happy that President Trump is back in office again.
It is a I didn't know that I was as stressed out as I was until President Trump got back in office.
I wanted President Trump to run for the presidency 30 years ago because he was a businessman and he was going to run this country as a businessman and not as a crooked politician.
And the Democrats ought to be ashamed of themselves, as a number of people have said.
With the cuts that he's trying to do, if the Democrats really, really care about the citizens of this country, they ought to be trying to figure out what they can do to make it better for the people.
I have not heard one Democrat since Donald Trump has been elected come out with anything positive to say about him or any ideas that they might have of how to cut back this out-of-control spending.
What are their ideas?
Anytime I try to watch them, and I don't watch Fox.
I have basic cable.
So these people that are saying that we all get our news from Fox, I don't watch Fox.
I don't have Fox on my TV.
I'm in Massachusetts.
I have liberal news all day long, but I'm not stupid.
I read.
I pay attention.
I see what the Democrats are doing.
All they do is complain.
Here's an idea for them.
Stop complaining and tell the American people where you think the out-of-control spending ought to be cut instead of talking about what Donald Trump is not doing.
Okay.
pedro echevarria
Okay.
That's Ann in Massachusetts.
Independent Line next.
Tammy in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Hi.
unidentified
Hi.
Thank you for taking my call.
So I'd just like to preface this with, I was a Republican, a McCain Republican.
And then when Gingrich and McConnell started cheating to keep certain Supreme Court justices and I switched parties.
But I'm here in Florida and I can tell you this is a mess.
I think people are ignoring some very important facts.
So I just watched the Canadian government saying they're going to stop trade, reroute their oil and gas pipelines to their own coast so that they can trade oil and gas with Europe, which will undermine the ports we built three years ago to expand our oil and gas trade to Europe.
So that's one.
Number two, I just listened to the Premier of Singapore say they are going to stop trade with the U.S. unless we agree to zero tariffs because they have worked to deal with the Asian market, which if you guys don't know, ASEAN, including Australia and New Zealand.
Singapore is the fifth largest economy in the world, and they're cutting off trade with us to trade with people who they can trust and rely upon because Trump and the Republican administration does not honor their trade deals and does not promote the rule of law.
Then the third is Japan.
Japan is another major training partner who's also said they're going to align with the ASEAN bloc, China, and Saudi Arabia and India rather than trade with the U.S.
So we are heading down a very dangerous path for the United States because of the arrogance of this administration and the Republican Party that is in place at this time.
pedro echevarria
Tammy there in St. Petersburg, Florida, giving us her perspective on international issues at his speech in Michigan last night.
It was the president himself giving his own assessment of the 100 days, particularly when it comes to reducing the size of the federal government.
Here's some of his comments from yesterday.
donald j trump
And on day one, I created that very right now, very successful Department of Government efficiency headed by Elon.
That was a big thing doing that.
I mean, the numbers are really incredible.
Doge.
So it was a very big thing.
We terminated the left-wing money laundering scam known as USAID.
How about the money that was going out?
How about the money that was going out?
Billions and billions.
They were giving individual people billions of dollars.
Can you believe it?
People that had nothing, they got a billion.
unidentified
They got one, got two billion, two billion for the environment.
donald j trump
Had $100 in the bank.
They got $2 billion.
Not $2 million.
$2 million would have been a lot.
$200,000 would have been a lot, but it would have been fine.
$2 billion!
And we directed all federal workers to return to the office in person, or unfortunately, they're fired.
You're fired.
You know, some of these guys got their golf handicap way down during the so-called time where they're supposed to be working at home.
You know, they weren't working at home.
Who the hell would work at home?
How do you work at home?
They're terrible.
And, you know, we found a lot of them where they had second jobs.
Just taking us for a ride.
pedro echevarria
If you watch C-SPAN, sometimes you'll see cars driving up to the front of the White House.
And as they drive up the driveway there, then you'll see them pass what's collectively known as Pebble Beach.
It's a series of white tents where media outlets have stakeouts and positions.
And that's where we are today for this 100-days look at President Trump and his administration.
And it starts.
Let's hear from Orlando.
Orlando is in Georgia, joining us on our Republican line on the first 100 days.
Orlando, good morning.
You're on.
unidentified
Good morning.
Yeah, Trump has done a wonderful job.
And, you know, when it comes to the Democrat, they didn't say anything when the prices was going up.
Now we got somebody trying to get the prices down.
But for four years, they let Joe Biden run rapid, and we didn't even know what he was saying half of the time.
We didn't even know what was going on.
But Donald Trump is coming in, and he's trying to strain things out.
And of course, people who don't work, who get on C-SPAN, call in, and complain, yeah, they're going to be mad because they can't get that free money no more.
While people like me who are out here driving trucks, working every day, and people like them that sit at home and play on the computer are taking all our money.
So I want Donald Trump to look into the trucking companies that have went to other countries and got people to dispatch loads and brokerage loads from other countries and bring some of those jobs back so mothers who have children can be dispatchers in America and dispatch American loads in America.
pedro echevarria
From Ohio, Independent Line, Philly, hello, you're next up.
Go ahead.
unidentified
Good morning.
How are you, sir?
Fine, thank you.
I just want to say that I think Donald Trump is doing a wonderful job.
And the reason why I say that is because all Americans have common sense and they really see with their eyes and they know exactly right from wrong.
chip roy
And if you're a, I just can't comprehend like some of the, I don't say all the Democrats because there's a lot of good ones, but the ones that don't understand the slop, they keep thinking about it's the same old party.
unidentified
It's not.
The party has completely changed in the wrong direction.
So I feel sorry for these people, old school Democrats that still are stuck in that mold thinking that everything's the same because they don't watch the news.
They're not educated.
They don't know what's going on.
pedro echevarria
So Philly, let me follow up on something you said, if I may.
You said he's doing a wonderful job because people can see a sense of right and wrong.
Elaborate on that.
What do you mean by those two statements?
unidentified
Well, common sense tells you that if you're a parent or a grandparent and you support bringing those illegals back into our country, and then you've screwed your grandchildren over or your kids over.
And I'll tell you why.
This last guy that was on a little bit ago just got done saying, I can be at home and they can just take me out of here.
That's not true.
We're talking about people that are in gangs that are the most ruthless gangs in the country.
We're not talking about normal people.
That's just common sense.
Get them out of here.
Why would you want those people in here?
We never had them before.
Why do we got to take them now?
The only reason why the Democrats are saying anything about it, because they're trying to find a loophole to get attention because nobody's really listening to them.
What they should be doing is trying to be upright and support the right things.
Okay.
pedro echevarria
Okay, Philly, there in Ohio.
Part of your comments on this first 100 days.
Also, we want to give you information, stats, figures, other kinds of information that you can use as you assess these 100 days.
John McCartle has been joining us doing the yeoman's work on that front.
Mr. McCartle, go ahead.
john mcardle
Pedro, we've heard from President Trump on how he assesses the first 100 days.
First, at that rally in Michigan last night, it was his first major speech outside of Washington of this second administration.
And then, as one of our viewers pointed out already this morning, he's going to be on NewsNation tonight, NewsNation promoting that Cuomo town hall first 100 days featuring President Trump.
It's at 8 p.m. Eastern tonight on NewsNation.
We'll hear what the president has to say.
And then another event that's being watched closely today that will be tied closely to President Trump's first 100 days.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis is releasing its first quarter GDP estimates for today, and that's set to come out any minute now.
Those numbers are likely to impact stock market numbers today.
Forbes, with their tweet, closely watching the release of those numbers, we'll see what it means for the stock market.
For viewers, as we've talked about this morning, stock market numbers, certainly part of the first hundred days story here when it comes to the numbers that have defined these first few months.
You could see Donald Trump in 2025, the stock market's performance.
This is specifically the SP 500 index, the percentage changed since Inauguration Day.
Donald Trump down there around the minus 10% range this year as compared, as you can see, to Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and the first Trump administration, all beating that average in their first 100 days.
The stock market, certainly, and economic numbers, part of the story as well about approval ratings for the president.
It is a place where he seems most vulnerable right now.
This from NBC News, national polling averages, when it comes to cost of living and inflation, that was one of the issues that was polled on there on Donald Trump's approval ratings.
It's at the bottom of this chart, just 37% approving of the president's handling of inflation and cost of living, 61% disapproving.
The president does his best on border and immigration numbers and government spending numbers.
He's underwater when it comes to managing the federal government, foreign policy, tariffs, and again, those cost of living numbers.
Those are just some of the polls out as we mark the first hundred days of the second Trump administration.
pedro echevarria
Back to your calls.
Let's go to Jim.
Jim is in West Virginia Democrats line.
unidentified
Good morning.
Yeah, I was listening to other people speaking.
I just wanted to remind people of a few points.
I feel that Trump has led the Republican Party kind of over a cliff of self-righteousness and purity and blah, blah, blah.
And in the process, he is eroding real concepts of democracy and Western liberal notions of a legal constitution and due process.
And that's points that Democrats are trying to make.
And Democrats have tried to make these points, but they get shouted down by people with their right-wingers, with their fiery passions that don't want to listen to sanity and reason.
I think there's a feeling in the United States that, oh, this isn't perfect, that isn't great, and so on and so forth.
And that sometimes is just the way it is.
We have a big, huge, expensive nation to run.
And I understand how these people think that the VA is going to be better, provide better service to veterans by firing 70,000 employees or Social Security or the IRS and on and on and on.
These things, it's an expensive nation to run.
You have to have a tax base to take care of that.
But Trump tells people, I feel the Trump and the Republican Party, they want to cling to lies and oversimplify everything.
And as far as that, who was the person that made the centerpiece of his rallies screaming about immigrants and calling them illegals?
Well, you know, Jeff Sessions, the Attorney General, and Trump, his first term, they changed a first-time border violation coming across the border, some woman with her kids.
They changed that to a felony.
Before, during the Obama administration, it was a misdemeanor unless a person had drugs or guns.
pedro echevarria
Gotcha, gotcha.
Only because we're sticking to the 100 days current.
Let's go to Paul in Florida, Republican line.
Go ahead.
unidentified
Yes, thank you for taking my call.
You know, I heard one caller say that Trump has a small group of followers.
I just want to remind people that Donald Trump had 77 million votes.
He took the populist vote.
He took the electoral vote.
He is not just a few followers.
He's got most Americans behind him.
I lived in Michigan.
If I took my boat across to Canada, before I threw an anchor in their water or before I came on shore, I had to call Canadian Border Patrol and get permission to go on land.
Then when I left Canada, I had to call back to U.S. Border Patrol and get permission and customs and get permission to come back to the United States.
But yet we open up our borders and just let people walk across, and that's okay.
It's not.
It's a crime.
And we need to get these people out of our country.
This is disgraceful what Biden has done to our country and what the Democrats have done.
And you know what?
They all allowed it.
They all said that Biden was sound-minded.
He had so much energy as he laid on the beach sleeping and eating his ice cream.
It was disgraceful.
Thank you for taking my call.
pedro echevarria
Lynchburg, Virginia, Independent Line, we will hear from Joe.
Joe, go ahead.
unidentified
Yeah, thanks for taking my call, CNN.
Sorry, C-SPAN.
There's a lot of misinformation going around, but I want to clarify something for everybody out there, Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal.
An immigrant is someone who legally goes through the process of becoming a citizen of the United States.
A migrant is someone who relocates temporarily with the purposes of returning to their country.
An illegal immigrant, an illegal alien, is someone who enters the United States illegally for whatever purpose, and they have no guaranteed rights here in the United States.
So for some of you guys who constantly make that mistake, whether it be intentional or unintentional, you are dishonest with that discussion.
And Donald Trump has done a great job in dealing with illegal aliens in this nation.
He's not done a great job so far in everything else, but on that one, I will give him a pass.
And I think I'm the only honest caller on here because I can be objective.
pedro echevarria
When it comes to the everything else and he's not done, and your assessment that he's not done a good job, what's one of those anything else categories?
unidentified
I think the steadfast way that he tried to speed up the process of defaulting student loan borrowers where you have 5.2 million people currently in default, if they're not paying their bills now, if you try to force them to do that, they're not going to do that.
And we're going to create a debtor society.
I think it's a better way.
I'm not saying that other people should pay for other people's education, but a lot of those people who are student borrowers are taxpayers as well.
So that's one of the misnomers that gets put out there.
So I think he could do better with that.
I think he's doing things that people haven't done.
But I want to say this one last point real quick as well.
I'm really disappointed with C-SPAN because we just had a governor yesterday basically tell people to confront elected officials and we are not even discussing the fact that that, you know, whether or not that's a dangerous rhetoric to have in this country.
And he should not be, he's, that you shouldn't be doing, we shouldn't have elected officials doing that.
pedro echevarria
Okay, that's Joe there in Lynchburg, Virginia, talking about our network C-SPAN, in which we allow you to call in from all parts of the United States and sometimes even beyond that to comment on issues of politics.
You'll notice that our location is different today outside of the White House here, that we've decided to set up shop to talk about these first 100 days.
And you can join in the conversation.
Republicans 202-748-8001.
Democrats 202-748-8000.
Independents 202-748-8002.
You can post on X at C-SPANWJ, our Facebook page, facebook.com/slash C-SPAN.
You want to make comments there.
We will go to Jack in Atlanta, Democrats line.
unidentified
Hi.
Hey, how are you doing?
I just want to say I just can't believe the people calling in there are believing any of the propaganda of this guy.
Look at the signs behind you.
You have one that says rape, rape of a child, murder.
There's no policeman local in my town, in your town, in any town, who is going to let a murderer, a rapist, a child rapist go.
This is a bunch of baloney.
There's no such possibility that Donald Trump's people are going around finding these murderers and rapists that nobody else found before.
This is just pure propaganda.
The people who believe those signs are just silly.
And Donald Trump has been this kind of propagandist for his entire life.
He used to lie about how tall his buildings are to try to outdo the buildings around him.
So Donald Trump, this is a tactic that I don't know if you remember the Filipino president who went after drug dealers and started killing and disappearing all kinds of people around the Philippines, the exact same way Donald Trump is doing it now.
steve vaus
And now this president of the Philippines, he's in front of the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.
unidentified
So all those people who believe that ICE is really going around finding rapists that the local police didn't find or murderers, it's just a bunch of lies.
It's not true.
And so people have to realize that this is all baloney.
pedro echevarria
Okay, Jack in Atlanta, let's go to Sarah in Maryland, Republican line.
peter navarro
Hi.
unidentified
Hi, good morning.
I just really appreciate this line.
There was a gentleman that talked a few calls ago about, first of all, I think Trump is doing a fantastic job in his first 100 days.
In fact, in the first 10 days, I felt like I was on cloud nine because the man is doing everything that I would want a president to do for my country.
There was a gentleman who was talking about all these lawsuits that are going on.
And what you don't realize, or what I want people to realize, is that as those lawsuits are all going on, we are codifying law in this country to support the values, American values in this country.
So as those lawsuits go through the court system in this first 100 days, we are going to codify law that is going to back and support American values.
And I think that is supremely intellectual and amazing.
The other thing with regards to immigration is, you know, I always think of this country as my house.
This is my house.
Would I open my front door or allow anyone to just come onto the property that I pay taxes for to just set up shop and use all the resources that I have in my house and on my land?
And the reality is, is no.
And I love the caller Joe just a couple calls ago who defined what a legal alien is.
And the fact is, is that we are supposed to allow, as Americans, refugees who are suffering from persecution in their own countries to come into this country.
And we certainly will allow that.
But what's happened over the last four years is an influx, the Great Reset, trying to change the population for somebody else's use.
And that's not allowed.
This country is an amazing country.
Thank you.
pedro echevarria
Sarah and Maryland, let's go to Joan in Nevada, Independent Line.
Joan in Nevada.
Hello.
One more time for Joan.
Okay.
Why don't we put her on hold if we can?
And can we move to Sheila, Sheila in Youngstown, Ohio, Democrats line?
Sheila, good morning.
You are on.
Go ahead on the first 100 days of the Trump administration.
unidentified
Oh, good morning.
I was just going to, first of all, remind people of what the Pope had said.
His parents were immigrants fleeing from the Nazis.
And I just want to tell a local story that was on local news in Oklahoma.
pedro echevarria
But before we go too far, because this is dealing with the first 100 days, what's your assessment of the 100 days of the Trump administration?
unidentified
Well, this story will encompass everything I'm trying to say.
These American citizens, this family had moved from Maryland to Oklahoma two weeks ago.
The woman was waiting for her husband to get there.
She had two children, 20 armed, and they were American citizens.
Okay, American citizens, not migrants.
20 armed federal agents busted in, forced them out onto their yard undressed.
They removed everything from the house.
They took their documents, their phones, their money, their furniture, everything was removed.
These people were American citizens.
Check it out.
KFOR was.
And how does that relate to the 100 days?
This is how he's treating American citizens.
If you don't get what's going on, I mean, I just, I can't understand how many men on those pictures did anything wrong.
And they're going to send them to a prison for the rest of their life?
I mean, would Jesus think I'm going to send an innocent man to prison for the rest of his life?
What's wrong with these Catholics?
I just don't understand it.
What did the Pope say?
Okay.
pedro echevarria
Okay.
Since you started there, we'll end with there.
And Sheila in Youngstown, Ohio, continue on with your calls if you want.
As you do that, we're back to John McCurdle.
john mcardle
Pedro, I just wanted to fill viewers in on what we talked about just a few minutes ago, the first quarter GDP, gross domestic product numbers, those estimates out.
And they note, as Scott McFarlane out this morning, a Hill News reporter, that the U.S. economy went into reverse in the first quarter, according to the latest GDP data estimates.
The Hill newspaper writes this.
The U.S. GDP fell at an annualized rate of 0.3% during the first three months of the year, according to the data from the Commerce Department today.
That's down from an annualized increase of 2.4% in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The Hill notes that economists had expected U.S. GDP to fall amid a steep increase in orders on foreign products, which could be far more expensive once President Trump's full slate of tariffs take effect.
The preview of the report from Pantheon Macroeconomics that they cite say the drops seems to be wholly due to tariff-related distortions.
And one more ex post on this to give you a sense of the history of what this looks like.
The GDP numbers put into context over the past several quarters by Steve Ratner in his ex-post.
Wall Street financier worked on the auto task force in the Obama administration, contributing writer to op-eds in the New York Times.
He shows quarterly GDP post growth over time.
You can see in recent months that it was always in the green and now today backtracking down 0.3%.
We'll see how that impacts stock market numbers today, again, on the 100th day of Donald Trump's second term.
pedro echevarria
And that's what we're focusing on, getting your perspectives on a lot of different fronts, economic, immigration, otherwise.
If you want to call and let us know what your thoughts are in these first 100 days, let's try Jonah, Nevada again, Independent Line.
Hello.
unidentified
Good morning.
pedro echevarria
Morning, go ahead.
unidentified
Yes, in reference to with me being a senior and dollars, how much was that increase we got?
I know you said a percentage, but dollar-wise, how much was it?
pedro echevarria
Okay, Deloise in Herndon, Virginia, Republican Line.
You're next up.
Hello.
unidentified
Hello.
Thank you so much for taking my call, Peace Pan.
This is my first time calling, so I'm a little bit nervous, but I love listening to you because you have unfiltered news, and I try to promote that with everyone that I meet.
But every time I hear people speaking, sometimes it just urges me to call in and say something about certain things.
And when it comes to undocumented immigrants, I am so glad that President Trump is just taking the agenda that he has.
I just disagree with everyone thinking that all undocumented immigrants are criminals and gang gangsters.
Yes, there are some, but not all of them.
And I still don't support them being here illegally.
My issue is, as far as employment is concerned, I just recently learned that businesses, and maybe I have this wrong, and I hope I do, but businesses are allowed to hire undocumented immigrants that are paying into our tax system, our social security system, and all of that.
And the effects that that has on young college students and high school seniors who are not fortunate enough to have an internship at some big corporation, they would appreciate to have those entry-level jobs.
And you hear it all the time where they say, I can't find a job.
Export Selection
