Like some people are always calling and saying prices are going up.

They're kind of still the same.
But I am looking forward to watching him on News Nation tonight and the town hall meeting with Chris Cuomo at 8 o'clock this evening.

Well, when you say things are okay, are you looking primarily at prices or are you looking at other things?

That was my main thing.
And also the illegal immigrant.
So he's taking care of that.
You know, he is making changes on that.

Yes, I think it's been a horrible 100 days.
God knows what's coming next.
The bigger picture of everything he's doing should scare the hell out of everybody.
He's breaking the law.
He doesn't seem to care.
People don't seem to care that he's breaking the law.
And then he has a gull to talk about the rule of law in his speech like it's some, you know, pastime.
It's just horrific.
Everything's gone haywire.
We have more enemies than we ever had friends.
It's amazing to me how people just follow him.
And it starts off with, oh, you're going to feel a little bit of pain.
Oh, it might be longer.
Oh, it might be permanent.
And people just lead.
They just follow him like he's got a flute that's leading them.
It's like, wake up.
He's playing you.
He's playing you like there's no tomorrow.
This Bitcoin is mean coin.
He's just filling and lining his pockets.

Well, back to the original point you made as far as breaking the law.
Specifically, what do you mean by that?

When he says the courts, he can get that person back.
He has no intentions just because he knows he doesn't have to.
Even though he's been told by a court of law to do so.
They can deport people.
Just do it lawfully.
You're not above the law.
You need to make sure these people aren't American.
And you need to make sure they're not legal, especially when you laugh and say you can't get them back.
Like, oh, well, it's not a big deal.

Hi.
First 100 days, of course, the extension of his previous presidency, but maybe with better staff.
He brought out some key things that Americans are waking up to.
Inflation does not hide prices.
Inflation is the increase in the money supply.
And one of the effects of an inflated money supply is increased prices, and it has to do with supply and demand.
Very important, another aspect of supply and demand is we've had an unexpected increase of 20 million consumers that drives up the demand and the price for mainly fuel and housing and food.
So he's brought those things into the forefront.
And cutting the budget is inevitable.
We have a serious budget crisis.
And I'd like to, as a corollary to that, I would like to say democracy does not equal free stuff.
It's not the government's job to take care of people.
So we will have to cut.
The biggest part of the federal debt is the only way to really save it is to cut back on social programs.
You look at food stamps and Medicaid.
They have to be adjusted.
It's inevitable, and there will be great pain.
He's bringing this to the forefront early, and we have to get used to it.
But the biggest thing with the great pain that we're going to face, and it doesn't matter who's in the White House because of congressional spending, the great pain is coming.
And what it takes for a leader to do is to say, we're all sailing the USS America.
We're all in the same ship.
So we have to think of making America stable again and solid again financially.
And he's one that could do that if people would just stop hating him.

Okay, that's David there in North Carolina, the House and the Senate both working on bills to get the president's legislative agenda done, including tax cuts later on.
This morning, gross domestic product numbers expected out.
Taking a look at the bigger economic picture, you can factor those things too as you make your comments on these first 100 days.
Let's go to Sid, Sid in Maryland, Independent Line.

The biggest success is immigration and the Board of Security.
And President Trump has put Americans first.
Why is that such a problem for Democrats?
Why is that such a problem for Democrats who are advocating for illegal immigrants?
And they have to go all the way to El Salvador to support MS-13 gang members.
I don't think they even know the reality of MS-13 and how dangerous they are.
They want to put them in our communities so they can commit crime that they have already committed.
I fully support the president's 100, first 100 days.

There's more people like Trump in the cabinet today to support him.
He didn't have that in his first term.

Pedro, how do you measure a first 100 days?
That's a question a lot of people are asking.
There's a lot of numbers out there to do it.
Let me take you through some of those stories about measuring the president's second first 100 days, the first 100 days of his second term.
This is from the Independents out of the United Kingdom.
Over 200 lawsuits, 142 executive orders, and 24 days golfing.
Trump's first 100 days by the numbers.
Their story dives into it.
One of the big measuring points is approval ratings.
You can see Donald Trump's first and second terms with his average approval rating from national polls about in the low 40s.
That compares to Ronald Reagan in the high 60s, Barack Obama in the low 60s, and George H.W. Bush also at 60%.
And his son, George W. Bush, also right around 60%.
Joe Biden at this point was at 53% in the average of national polling of approval ratings.
There's another way to measure it that some have looked at, and that's posting online.
The Economist calls Donald Trump America's poster-in-chief, and he is very, very online.
They write the prolific social media influencer has churned out about 4,149 words a week on Truth Social and X. That's nearly a newspaper op-ed every day if you want to look at it that way.
And then here's just a few more by the numbers from the Hill newspaper.
Their wrap-up: 142 executive orders breaking the record for the most executive orders by a president in the first 100 days.
Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt had the record with 99, and that was to tackle the Great Depression.
Also, there's 123 active lawsuits against Donald Trump.
Five bills have been signed into law.
That's fewer than any president's first 100 days since at least the 1950s.
And then 7.9% is how much the SP 500 has dropped since Donald Trump took office.
This is the second worst record, only trailing former President Nixon's second term.
For context, the SP 500 usually rises about 2% in the first 100 days of a new administration.
That's, Pedro, just some of the by the numbers, and there's plenty more ways to measure it out there.

And one of those ways they're measuring issues of immigration and deportation, like we've told you at this location at the White House, those signs that you can see behind me.
You'll remember that it was last month that the president, during his address to Congress, talked about specifically his efforts on immigration.
Just to give you some perspective on these 100 days, let's go back in time to that point, and here's what he had to say about it.

Since taking office, my administration has launched the most sweeping border and immigration crackdown in American history, and we quickly achieved the lowest numbers of illegal border crossers ever recorded.
The media and our friends in the Democrat Party kept saying we needed new legislation.
We must have legislation to secure the border.
But it turned out that all we really needed was a new president.
Joe Biden didn't just open our borders.
He flew illegal aliens over them to overwhelm our schools, hospitals, and communities throughout the country.
Entire towns like Aurora, Colorado, and Springfield, Ohio buckled under the weight of the migrant occupation and corruption like nobody's ever seen before.
Beautiful towns destroyed.
Now, just as I promised in my inaugural address, we are achieving the great liberation of America.

I just wanted to call in and say that I am just absolutely proud to see a renewed focus on military readiness in the president's first 100 days.
I mean, the commitment to cutting through bureaucratic red tape and streamlining defense priorities certainly sends a strong signal to allies and adversaries alike.
You know, further positive steps are being taken to restore pride, discipline, and efficiency across the rank.
I'm seeing that.
And these reforms certainly prioritize our mission readiness and empower our service members that are long overdue and finally getting that attention.
And lastly, I would just say that support for warfighters certainly could not be mired in red tape.
And I'm encouraged to see that's putting capability and lethality over paperwork and politics.
And so as a proud American, lifelong servant of this nation, it just feels better today.

We have to.
If we don't, they go to Newsmax.
And anyone can look that up.

And Humpty Dumpty, he said the other day that gas prices are $1.98 in several states.
There's no state in this country that's $1.98.
He said egg prices are down 90%.

How would you assess the last 100?
kevin hern
Well, certainly been fast and furious, not only for the White House, but for us here in Congress, working on things like securing the southern border, you know, bringing transparency to government and accountability for so long.
Many Republicans, if not all, have talked about the waste fraud and abuse in government for decades.
Even some Democrats who care about spending have talked about it.
President Trump's actually doing something about it.
And certainly what we're seeing with releasing our energy production as he's done for the great state of mine, Oklahoma, Texas, so many others that produce the energy in this nation to keep us secure.
pedro echevarria
We heard from John McCarter earlier about the president signing five bills into office and comparing that to other administrations.
Legislatively, where do you think this 100 days has been, not only for you on Capitol Hill, but working with the White House?
kevin hern
Well, certainly it's moving at lightning speed with the executive orders, things that most of us, if not all of us, on the Republican Party approve with.
And by the way, there are some Democrats that quietly say they approve with them as well.
They're just, you know, they're just told they can't support them.
You talk about the five bills we passed.
Remind everybody that's watching and listening.
Republican Party, if we want limited government, you don't need to keep adding hundreds and hundreds of bills every single month, as it's been often done here in Congress.
We want to skinny down government, limit government, which is a principle of our American founders.
And the only way you're really going to do that is to cut the spending that goes out to some of these wasted bureaucracies that are out there.
And President Trump doge initially.
Now the cabinet secretaries are doing just that.

One of the things that Congress has been tasked with is passing this legislative bill of the president.
He said the other day he'd like to see that done, at least the tax portions of it by July the 4th.
What do you think about that as a deadline?
kevin hern
Well, I'm on Ways and Means.
I'm on the tax writing subcommittee.
Chairman Jason Smith has done a fantastic job of making sure that we're all informed.
It's important for everybody to note that this bill was passed, obviously 2017 Tax Cutting Jobs Act back almost eight years ago now.
Many of the people that were in Congress are no longer here.
So the chairman of Ways and Means, Chairman Smith, is tasked with bringing everybody up to speed, which he's been doing over the past year, knowing that we anticipated being in the majority as early as March of last year.
So we've been working with working groups, having policy hours, having policy sequestrations in the Library of Congress so that we could get up to speed for this very moment.
We're excited.
We're ready to go.
We're going to meet the Memorial Day deadline.

What do you think are the hurdles then if you want to meet that deadline?
What are the hurdles?
kevin hern
Well, I think it would have been much more difficult had we broken up the bill as originally was anticipated.
Chairman Smith, the Speaker of the House, and others really put their case forward with the President that we needed to pass one big beautiful bill as it's been called so far because then everybody gets a little bit of everything.
Nobody's going to get 100% of what they want when you're doing the legislative process.
Ronald Reagan reminded us back in the day that if you could get 80% of what you wanted, you should call it a day and move on.
And that's what we're moving for.
That's what we're shooting for, is that everybody gets something that they can go home and tell their constituents that they're working hard for them.

It was yesterday it was reported in a couple outlets that was Representative Don Bacon speaking out about concerns over cuts to Medicaid saying he would only accept up to $500 billion in cuts.
If that's the case and if others follow along, what complications does that mean for passing legislation that you want to pass?
kevin hern
Well, you know, energy and commerce is where the Medicaid waste is being looked at, things that streamline Medicaid.
It's not about cutting the benefits to those who deserve them.
Just as the president said on the campaign trail all last year, he's kept his promises.
He talked about tariff.
He kept those.
He talked about not touching Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits.
He has said that not only to you all in the press, but also to us in private.
And so we're doing everything that's out there possible to get after the duplicative spending on the backside of administrative cost, work requirements, which is an 87% polled United States desire for people to get benefits from the American government, from taxpayers.
that they work if they're eligible and able to work.
And so all of these things are components of that.
And I think as we go forward, Congressman Bacon is going to be able to see some of those works.
He's a great member of Congress in a tough district in Omaha, and so he knows exactly what he's talking about.

Representative, a lot of this banks on ultimately what the president does with tariffs.
What do you think about the possibility of tariffs complicating matters if, especially if inflation occurs or if a lot of these deals that they say they want to pass don't get passed?
kevin hern
I don't think it's going to have impact on the tax policies we're moving forward.
The president made campaign promises that got him elected, that helped us get into the majority in the Senate, stay in the majority in the House.
We have the so-called trifecta.
We're going to work hard over the next 16 months to exercise and execute that agenda.
Certainly the things that are before us right now are getting this reconciliation package done by the 4th of July and Independence Day.
I would argue that it's another Independence Day for the American people to be separated further from the federal government.
What we've seen over the decades and now what we've seen in the last four years, it cannot continue for our kids and grandkids with $2 trillion in deficits and $37 trillion in debt.
This president wants to do something about it.
He's doing something about it.
Congress is here to support him.

The president has said over the last couple of days, at least in interviews, about this idea of maybe eliminating or highly reducing income taxes because of what can be done on tariff policy.
What's the reality of that?
kevin hern
Well, we just have to see what the 10% tariff policy around the world does as far as generating income.
We have to see the reaction.
Certainly around the world, other leaders are going to have reactionary measures, policies they put in place.
But I think it's important that many people in Congress, I would say most of the United States, had no idea that other countries around the world have been imposing import tariffs on our products that we're sending them for literally decades.
And the president has called that out.
They've put up trade barriers, whether it's safety barriers that only apply to a United States-produced product like cars, and not put it on their own cars like in Japan.
And so the president's addressing each one of these, whether it's in France.
I mean, there's so many out there that have come forward.
I talk with the Secretary of the Treasury often.
Certainly talk with the legislative staff of the president.
All of these things are important.
They're moving at warp speed.
I don't think they thought this many people would come to the table all so quickly.
We're seeing what China's happening.
The economy in China is eroding very quickly.
They're looking at a reduction in their optimism.
So all these things are happening very quickly, and it's only just now been 100 days, and we're starting the first day of the next 100 days.

Before we let you go, it was Hakeem Jeffries, the minority leader, in a letter To his fellow Democrats, he assessed, he said this.
He said, Donald Trump and rubber stamp Republicans in Congress are crashing the economy, driving us towards a recession, and assaulting the American way of life.
What do you think of that assessment?

Well, so far he's been wrong.
The economy hasn't crashed.
Yes, there's been a dip in the Wall Street and the stock market, but now we've had six days in a row, and the futures look like it's going to be another positive day.
And listen, for the American people, I'd much rather follow a Donald Trump who's securing our southern border, who's bringing energy security back to us in the world, who's trying to stop the chaos around the world in wars, as opposed to the Democrats and the leader of the Democrat Party when they're following Joe Biden, who didn't even know he was in the White House, when he was allowing people to leave Afghanistan, creating 13 Gold Star families because they have a crazy pullout,
allowing the Russian-Ukrainian war to start, all the chaos with Iran, the Houthis, the Hezbollah, and Hamas.
I would much rather for the American people to follow Donald Trump than Joe Biden.

Listen, I just want to say, you know, Trump is, he's not doing these things to be politically popular, it seems to me, but these are the things that need to be done.
These are the necessary steps that must be taken.
There is no president in the last 40 years who's confronted China.
From the day China was led into the WTO, they cheat.
They've been cheating.
They've been dumping goods, wiping out businesses here.
They're manipulating their currency, and they're stealing our intellectual property.
What president has confronted China like Trump is doing?
Nobody.
And as far as immigration, it's obvious that, you know, Joe Biden and the Biden administration let in millions, 10, 15, we have no idea whether it's 20 million, 25 million, 15 million unvetted people.
That's an extraordinary situation.
So in order to correct that, Trump has to use extraordinary measures to remove these people.
You know, I think the problem we're having in America is we're not used to a politician doing what he says he's going to do.
And people are in shock that somebody is actually confronting the issues that are going to be.

Well, let me ask you, Barry, you said about China so far tariffs being put into place, but what makes you think that in the long run it's going to change China's position?

I'm really not sure about that.
But the idea is something had to be done.
Nobody was looking at this.
You know, I live in New York, and sometimes I drive straight up towards Canada.
At one time, there was town after town after town that survived and thrived on these little factories.
That is all gone now because as Ross Perot told us, if you sign NAFTA, you're going to hear a loud sucking sound.
And that's the jobs leaving America.
And that has to be confronted to some degree.
Listen, we're not going to bring back manufacturing the way it was.
There's a lot of new technology.
Maybe factories now, instead of having 100 people, are going to have 40 people.
But somebody has to address the issue.

Just that this country was founded and made by immigrants.
We're a melting pot.
They do a lot of the work that a lot of Americans don't necessarily want to do or enjoy doing.
And I think that there are better ways to go about the way he's handling things.
And with the tariff policy, the last thing we need is a trade war.
We should be building alliances or improving our alliances with the countries that we do work with and trying to do better with those that we don't.
And I don't think that a trade war is the right answer for any of that, especially with how little we actually produce in America.
And it'd be great if we had all these factories and manufacturing plants, but we do not.
And the amount of time that's going to take to build those and get that infrastructure up and going, it's just not realistic for the hard times that we all have to endure in between.

As far as I'm concerned, I think it's laughable that you have somebody like Hakeem Jeffrey saying it is that he's driving us towards a recession when it is that the policies that have been in place for how long have been driving us off a fiscal cliff.
You're looking at $36 trillion in the debt.
It's laughable.
So to think that it is that when we go on a course correction, that all of a sudden things are just going to be perfectly smooth right away.
It's unrealistic.
The president right now is doing what he needs to do to get us back on a path towards fiscal responsibility.
And as a young man with three children, and to be honest with you, I'm willing to deal with a little bit of pain right now to make sure that it is that my children have a brighter future than perhaps I do at the moment.

And I hope that it is that the people out there recognize that right now we're looking at the first hundred days.
That's not even the first 10% of what it is that he has to do.
And he is not doing this for political popularity.
He is doing this as a man who understands what it takes to be successful in to get things on the right path.
And he's doing it so it is that I think that not his family and those around him, but our country can continue to thrive the way it did that gave him the opportunities he had.
So as far as I'm concerned, people out there need to understand this is just the beginning of the ballgame.
We got to give him an opportunity to, you know, play out his plan.

Here's another post from X from the Secretary of Homeland Security, Christine Noam, saying, Under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, we have the most secure border in American history.
In less than 100 days, daily border encounters are down 93%, and migrant crossings are down 99.99% at the Darien Gap.
The world is hearing our message.
Not come is what she posted yesterday for visual learners.
Here's a chart from the BBC showing the arrests at the United States border on the left side there.
That was during the first Trump administration.
The middle, the blue bars representing the months of the Biden administration for four years there, and then the first three months of the second Trump administration on the right.
As of March, just some 7,181.
You can see how far down those total monthly arrest numbers are at the U.S. border by border patrol.
And then another factor is the interior arrests in this country.
So not just at the border, but those arrests made in cities and counties and states throughout the country.
This is another chart from the BBC.
Immigration arrests inside the U.S. hit their highest level since the pandemic under Donald Trump this year.
These are people detained by ICE for the first time each month.
Again, you can see the end of the first Trump administration on the left, the months of the Biden administration in the blue, and then the first three months of the second Trump administration on the right there in March, up to 19,000 numbers and more.
One more text on one more tweet, or I should say ex-post on this topic that from Senator Bernie Sanders.
He posted on this issue yesterday saying, illegal arrests made by the Trump administration are intended to spread fear and silence dissent.

The last 100 days for me have been very troubling.
I think that there is a serious issue in this country that our perception is extremely skewed based on, I guess, your own personal beliefs.
The last 100 days, this is a reality.
There have been five bills passed into law.
We've had 130 executive orders.
Over half of those executive orders have been challenged in court and they're now currently blocked.
And we have, in my opinion, the foundations of what is going to be an authoritarian presidency.
We have a president that is capitalizable when it comes to his lives.
And the first thing he did was get rid of the checks and balances, i.e. the attorney generals, people that stand up against him.
And the problem is the same thing is happening now that is happening in this last administration.
People that, you know, majority of people that are getting terminated now are Trump allies, Trump supporters.
The whole Pete Hexet debacle, the people that supposedly got terminated from that were all people that Pete Hexet brought in.
And I'm very concerned that because people have this idealism or saver complex when it comes to this administration, that they are really willing to give up their own personal freedoms.
This 100 days, nothing has gotten done.
That's the reason why he has the lowest approval rating out of any presidency.
And I'm very concerned that people are just going to be like, well, you know, even though the house is on fire, I feel good.
And that's just something that I'm seeing that is very concerning.
I think that we are in a very bad place as a nation.
I look forward to 2026 because that is the next time that we could actually put checks and balances back on this administration.
Because for whatever reason, this administration does not believe in checks and balances.

Speaking of Democratic leaders, it is a lot going on today that people have been talking about, whether it's Democratic leaders or the first 100 days.
C-SPAN was out yesterday interviewing folks around Washington, D.C. about the first 100 days of the second Trump administration.

Well, so far he's playing very high with the immigration.
So everything he has promised to the voters, that's what he's doing now.
He's doing great work with the tariffs.
He's imposing to other countries.
So when we go to sell our woods to other countries, they want to give us a tariff.
So he's doing the same thing.
I think it's a good thing that he's doing the tariffs because it implies for other businesses from foreign countries to build here to more employment for the American people and a better economy for the American people.
Obviously, it's not a short-term thing, but in the long run, it's going to do really, really good.
I think the best part of it is that he's really doing what he said he was going to do.
So we knew what to expect and that's exactly where we are getting.
And I really appreciate that part of it.

Have you seen an impact when it comes to tariffs, when it comes to immigration?

Well, not where we are, where we are.
We're in a small town.
I don't think it's a short term for sure.
It's hard to say.
So only a few days, 100 days is nothing.
But eventually things will get better.
I'm pretty sure he's doing his job and he's going to continue doing better every day.

Like, I mean, so far from what I've been reading and what I do, most of his voters are, I believe, satisfied or happy with what he's doing.
But from the get-go, from what I've seen, I think it's been so far mixed back to negative.

What grade would you give him yourself?
Probably like a C minus or a D. Tell us about the actions that he's taken so far.
Is there something that you like that he's done?
Is there something that you don't like?

Well, to start off, the things that I like, I mean, I am all, you know, for like, you know, tariffs, because, you know, we used to be a protectionist state, but eventually that all went away with free trade.
But, I mean, it's one thing to do tariffs, but he uses more of them like kind of like as a threat instead of actually going for it.
I don't know if it's because like the people around him tell him not to do it or like his whoever donated to him and stuff, but so far like I'm all for that.
Like because that, but the thing is we also don't have like the resources to start building and you know manufacturing here.
That's the thing.
Like if you're gonna have the tariffs, you gotta have like the resources back home in order to restart it or think.
And he hasn't really given much incentive for companies that went overseas to come back.
But overall that's one thing that I do like.
Now as for him ending like illegal border crossings, I do also support that as well.
The thing that I think that he's done bad on is like, I mean the Ukraine war is his now.
He said that he was gonna end it on day one.
Clearly that hasn't happened.
And also I mean he said that he was going to do like all these deportations which you know each administration does that but like I mean Biden deported more people than he has so far for the most part.
And also I mean essentially he said that he wasn't going to do any more like big spending bills and he's giving like a trillion dollars to the Defense Department.
And on top of that there's also what's going on in the Middle East and everything else.
But for the most part it's been pretty negative for me.

What's it been like in the last 100 days reporting on this second term?

So it's been busy.
The administration has come out firing on all cylinders in terms of having a very ambitious agenda in terms of immigration, in terms of the economy.
They've been willing to kind of push legal limits in achieving those aims.
And so this has been a really busy 100 days as a reporter as well.

The administration's spending time this week to tout its accomplishments as they say or at least give their perspective on it.
What's the job that you bring to it to assess what they're saying and what the truth is?

So really what we're supposed to do is to test the assumptions they're making, the logic of the policies that they are pulling together and looking at what the impact is in the real world and on the markets.
And so our job is not just to repeat what is coming from the White House, although we have to explain what they're saying, but then also to test it against what's happening in the real world.
And so that's a lot of the reporting that we're doing around tariffs right now is how the administration describing their policies, their tariffs, in line with where those negotiations actually are right now.
And so that's what we've been looking into.

We've heard a lot about tariffs even this week, more information about auto aspects of the tariffs.
Give us a sense of what the administration's end game is or even if they've expressed such a thing.

So there's a lot of questions about what the end game is exactly.
The president has described tariffs as kind of a cure-all, right?
That they can solve geopolitical problems.
They can solve problems with countries that we have issues with.
They can fix law enforcement issues related to fentanyl coming across borders.
They've talked about how it can reindustrialize and reshore manufacturing in the economy.
They've talked about how it can be used as leverage for individual deals.
So that's really a big open question is what will satisfy Trump?
What is the end game in terms of tariffs?
And I can tell you in talking to U.S. trading partners, they're confused.
When they put a proposal on the table, they don't know if it's going to be accepted.
They don't know if it's going to pass muster with this administration because they don't necessarily know what that end game is and what the administration wants to accomplish.

When you ask the question about the end game, do you get an answer?
Do you get variable answers?
How does that work?

We get variable answers depending on the official we're talking to and depending on the day.
And even with Trump, we've gotten a variety of different answers about how tariffs can be a solution to the economic problems that he's put forward.

One of the things that you brought up connected to tariffs is the ability to actually finalize trade deals.
What's the White House saying as far as what's been actually finalized?

They're saying that they're close on a number of deals.
Our reporting shows that they've definitely close to a scope of negotiations with a number of close U.S. trading partners, whether it comes to India or Japan, countries like that.
But as far as reaching kind of the ultimate deal with a country like China, we're still very far away from that at this point.

Trevor Honeycott, when you come to work every day, what's it like reporting on this White House, especially as you deal with the press aspects of the White House?
What's the challenge?
What have the challenges been?

So our job is to try to maintain as much coverage of the White House as we possibly can and to make sure that our reporters are getting in on a day-to-day basis.
And so that's been kind of the big challenge.
It usually is with most of these administrations is preserving, maintaining access, making sure that if something is closed to press, that we get it maybe open to a smaller press pool.
If something's open to a press pool, maybe getting it open to just open press to the larger press corps.
And so with this administration, we've had a president who is very talkative.
He speaks to the press sometimes more than once a day.
And that's a big change from the last administration.
So for us, it's been making sure that we have access to those events and making sure that, for instance, the wires are represented when the president is speaking to the press so that that message gets out to the entire press corps.
So that's what we've been fighting for.

Can you elaborate on that, the wires and what's been going on specifically with the wire services in light of the Associated Press?

Absolutely.
So the wires have normally, for decades and decades, had a position in the White House press pool.
And what we are trying to do is advocate to make sure that that comes back because the administration, in terms of managing, the administration has taken over the management of the press pool and the wires are no longer a part of that.
And so we have advocated for bringing us back in because we feel that we make a contribution to the broader press corps in terms of distributing news very quickly to thousands of clients and billions of people.

One of your jobs, besides the day-to-day work of covering the White House, you're on the board of the White House Correspondents Association.
Talk about that aspect of the job.
What have the challenges been?

So, we had, as you saw, a different kind of dinner this year.
We had no entertainer and no president.
And really, we thought it was kind of back to basics for us.
It was an attempt to do a dinner that was really about the core beliefs of our organization, which are belief in the First Amendment and scholarships and support and training for the next round of journalists that are coming up out of colleges and universities right now.
And so, that was really the focus of our dinner: celebrating the traditions of this country in terms of a free press and encouraging the continuation of those traditions.

Always, always pushing the administration to let us, the press corps, choose who covers the president and not the other way around.

I think it's really important that the press tells its story more, that we speak to the public more about what it is and why we do it, right?

And so, I think we need to do more to educate the public about what it is that we do on a day-to-day basis.

The president continues to follow through on the promises he made to the American people.
And I'm proud that the Senate has been here to help, quoting from his remarks to reporters at that Tuesday lunch yesterday.

Simply, America's back celebrating the first 100 days, the picture there from the president's joint address to Congress.

In these 100 days, what has gone up?
Cost of groceries?

Energy costs? Up.
Cost of clothes, of homes, of cars, up.

The stock market, down.
The dollar, down.
And today, we saw the trend continue.
Consumer confidence, down.
And that's not just a statistic.
Consumers, when they don't have confidence, don't buy things.
Businesses, when they see chaos, freeze.
I have talked to business people, some of the biggest businesses, medium-sized businesses, and small businesses.
They're all frozen.
Even if Trump were to drop the tariffs, and who knows what the hell he'll do, I doubt he'll do that.
The businesses don't know what he'd do two weeks later, so they're frozen.
And that's why the chance of recession, not according to us, but according to banking experts, is so much greater than it was before.
Americans are noticing.
The polls this week show Trump has the lowest 100-day approval rating since they started polling 80 years ago.
The lowest.
Even worse, 72% of Americans think it's likely that Trump's handling of the economy will walk us directly into a recession.

Freedom of speech is supposed to be one of our amendments.

We built this America.
We did a lot for America.

And then when Gingrich and McConnell started cheating to keep certain Supreme Court justices at UNIT switched parties.
But I'm here in Florida and I can tell you this is a mess.
I think people are ignoring some very important facts.
So I just watched the Canadian government saying they're going to stop trade, reroute their oil and gas pipelines to their own coast so that they can trade oil and gas with Europe, which will undermine the ports we built three years ago to expand our oil and gas trade to Europe.
So that's one.
Number two, I just listened to the Premier of Singapore say they are going to stop trade with the U.S. unless we agree to zero tariffs because they have worked to deal with the Asian market, which if you guys don't know, ASEAN, including Australia and New Zealand.

Singapore is the fifth largest economy in the world, and they're cutting off trade with us to trade with people who they can trust and rely upon because Trump and the Republican administration does not honor their trade deals and does not promote the rule of law.

Japan is another major training partner who's also said they're going to align with the ASEAN bloc to China and Saudi Arabia and India rather than trade with the U.S.

Pedro, we've heard from President Trump on how he assesses the first 100 days.
First at that rally in Michigan last night, it was his first major speech outside of Washington of this second administration.
And then as one of our viewers pointed out already this morning, he's going to be on NewsNation tonight, NewsNation promoting that Cuomo town hall first 100 days featuring President Trump.
It's at 8 p.m. Eastern tonight on NewsNation.
We'll hear what the president has to say.
And then another event that's being watched closely today that will be tied closely to President Trump's first 100 days.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis is releasing its first quarter GDP estimates for today, and that's set to come out any minute now.
Those numbers are likely to impact stock market numbers today.
Forbes, with their tweet, closely watching the release of those numbers, we'll see what it means for the stock market.
For viewers, as we've talked about this morning, stock market numbers, certainly part of the first 100 days story here when it comes to the numbers that have defined these first few months.
You could see Donald Trump in 2025, the stock market's performance.
This is specifically the SP 500 index, the percentage changed since Inauguration Day.
Donald Trump down there around the minus 10% range this year as compared, as you can see, to Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and the first Trump administration, all beating that average in their first 100 days.
The stock market, certainly, and economic numbers, part of the story as well about approval ratings for the president.
It is a place where he seems most vulnerable right now.
This from NBC News, national polling averages, when it comes to cost of living and inflation, that was one of the issues that was polled on there on Donald Trump's approval ratings.
It's at the bottom of this chart, just 37% approving of the president's handling of inflation and cost of living, 61% disapproving.
The president does his best on border and immigration numbers and government spending numbers.
He's underwater when it comes to managing the federal government, foreign policy, tariffs, and again, those cost of living numbers.
Those are just some of the polls out as we mark the first hundred days of the second Trump administration.

Yeah, I was listening to other people speaking.
I just wanted to remind people of a few points.
I feel that Trump has led the Republican Party kind of over a cliff of self-righteousness and purity and blah, blah, blah.
And in the process, he is eroding real concepts of democracy and Western liberal notions of a legal constitution and due process.
And that's points that Democrats are trying to make.
And Democrats have tried to make these points, but they get shouted down by people with their right-wingers, with their fiery passions that don't want to listen to sanity and reason.
I think there's a feeling in the United States that, oh, this isn't perfect, that isn't great, and so on and so forth.
And that sometimes is just the way it is.
We have a big, huge, expensive nation to run.
And I don't understand how these people think that the VA is going to be better, provide better service to veterans by firing 70,000 employees or Social Security or the IRS and on and on and on.
These things, it's an expensive nation to run.
You have to have a tax base to take care of that.
But Trump tells people, I feel the Trump and the Republican Party, they want to cling to lies and oversimplify everything.
And as far as that, who was the person that made the centerpiece of his rallies screaming about immigrants and calling them illegals?
Well, you know, Jeff Sessions, the Attorney General, and Trump, his first term, they changed a first-time border violation coming across the border, some woman with her kids.
They changed that to a felony.
Before, during the Obama administration, it was a misdemeanor unless a person had drugs or guns.
Gotcha.

If I took my boat across to Canada, before I threw an anchor in their water or before I came on shore, I had to call Canadian Border Patrol and get permission to go on land.
Then when I left Canada, I had to call back to U.S. Border Patrol and get permission and customs and get permission to come back to the United States.
But yet we open up our borders and just let people walk across, and that's okay.
It's not.
It's a crime.
And we need to get these people out of our country.
This is disgraceful what Biden has done to our country and what the Democrats have done.
And you know what?
They all allowed it.
They all said that Biden was sound-minded.
He had so much energy as he laid on the beach sleeping and eating his ice cream.

There's a lot of misinformation going around, but I want to clarify something for everybody out there, Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal.
An immigrant is someone who legally goes through the process of becoming a citizen of the United States.
A migrant is someone who relocates temporarily with the purposes of returning to their country.
An illegal immigrant, an illegal alien, is someone who enters the United States illegally for whatever purpose, and they have no guaranteed rights here in the United States.
So for some of you guys who constantly make that mistake, whether it be intentional or unintentional, you are dishonest with that discussion.
And Donald Trump has done a great job in dealing with illegal aliens in this nation.
He's not done a great job so far in everything else, but on that one, I will give him a pass.
And I think I'm the only honest caller on here because I can be objective.

When it comes to the everything else, and he's not done, and your assessment that he's not done a good job, what's one of those anything else categories?

I think the steadfast way that he's tried to speed up the process of defaulting student loan borrowers, where you have 5.2 million people currently in default, if they're not paying their bills now, if you try to force them to do that, they're not going to do that.
And we're going to create a debtor society.
I think it's a better way.
I'm not saying that other people should pay for other people's education, but a lot of those people who are student borrowers are taxpayers as well.
So that's one of the misnomers that gets put out there.
So I think he could do better with that.
I think he's doing things that people haven't done.
But I want to say this one last point real quick as well.
I'm really disappointed with C-SPAN because we just had a governor yesterday basically tell people to confront elected officials and we are not even discussing the fact that that, you know, whether or not that's a dangerous rhetoric to have in this country.
And he should not be, he's, that you shouldn't be doing, we shouldn't have elected officials doing that.

I just really appreciate this line.
There was a gentleman that talked a few calls ago about, first of all, I think Trump is doing a fantastic job in his first 100 days.
In fact, in the first 10 days, I felt like I was on Cloud 9 because the man is doing everything that I would want a president to do for my country.
There was a gentleman that was talking about all these lawsuits that are going on.
And what you don't realize, or what I want people to realize, is that as those lawsuits are all going on, we are codifying law in this country to support the values, American values in this country.
So as those lawsuits go through the court system in this first 100 days, we are going to codify law that is going to back and support American values.
And I think that is supremely intellectual and amazing.
The other thing with regard to immigration is, you know, I always think of this country as my house.
This is my house.
Would I open my front door or allow anyone to just come onto the property that I pay taxes for to just set up shop and use all the resources that I have in my house and on my land?
And the reality is, is no.
And I love the caller Joe just a couple calls ago who defined what a legal alien is.
And the fact is, is that we are supposed to allow, as Americans, refugees who are suffering from persecution in their own countries to come into this country.
And we certainly will allow that.
But what's happened over the last four years is an influx, the Great Reset, trying to change the population for somebody else's use.
And that's not allowed.
This country is an amazing country.

They removed everything from the house.

Pedro, I just wanted to fill viewers in on what we talked about just a few minutes ago, the first quarter GDP, gross domestic product numbers, those estimates out.
And they note, as Scott McFarlane, a Hill News reporter, that the U.S. economy went into reverse in the first quarter, according to the latest GDP data estimates.
The Hill newspaper writes this.
The U.S. GDP fell at an annualized rate of 0.3% during the first three months of the year, according to the data from the Commerce Department today.
That's down from an annualized increase of 2.4% in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The Hill notes that economists had expected U.S. GDP to fall amid a steep increase in orders on foreign products, which could be far more expensive once President Trump's full slate of tariffs take effect.
The preview of the report from Pantheon Macroeconomics that they cite say the drops seems to be wholly due to tariff-related distortions.
And one more ex-post on this to give you a sense of the history of what this looks like.
The GDP numbers put into context over the past several quarters by Steve Ratner in his ex-post.
Wall Street Financier worked on the auto task force in the Obama administration, contributing writer to op-eds in the New York Times.
He shows quarterly GDP post growth over time.
You can see in recent months that it was always in the green and now today backtracking down 0.3%.

This is my first time calling, so I'm a little bit nervous, but I love listening to you because you have unfiltered news, and I try to promote that with everyone that I meet.
But every time I hear people speaking, sometimes it just urges me to call in and say something about certain things.
And when it comes to undocumented immigrants, I am so glad that President Trump is taking the has the agenda that he has.
I just disagree with everyone thinking that all undocumented immigrants are criminals and gang gangsters.
Yes, there are some, but not all of them.
And I still don't support them being here illegally.
My issue is, as far as employment is concerned, I just recently learned that businesses, and maybe I have this wrong, and I hope I do, but businesses are allowed to hire undocumented immigrants that are paying into our tax system, our social security system, and all of that.
And the effects that that has on young college students and high school seniors who are not fortunate enough to have an internship at some big corporation, they would appreciate to have those entry-level jobs.
And you hear it all the time where they say, I can't find a job.
You hear people, American citizens with master's degree that says, I worked so hard to get my master's degree and I still can't find a job.
And no one is talking about how a lot of these entry-level jobs, people say no one wants them.
But they forget about the group of people who would appreciate having those entry-level jobs as American citizens.
They would appreciate those jobs.

So the one thing I wanted to say about, you know, the last 100 days of the Trump presidency, I would say that it's an utter failure.
I mean, you know, on the campaign trail, Donald said that he was going to bring down prices.

Actually, prices have risen.
And when the tariffs went into effect, the gas station outside of my house literally went up 20 cents in less than 12 hours to 319.
Okay.
Actually, I'm sorry, 329.
Let me correct that.
All right, 329 is what he went up to.
He said he was going to bring manufacturing jobs back to America.
And yet, just last week alone, you see Nissan and you see Subaru pull out of the United States.
That's over 40,000 American jobs alone.
You see, UPS has to lay off 20,000 workers due to the economy.
So right there alone, in just the last week alone, 60,000 American jobs have been lost.

You see, Donald Trump also promised on the campaign trail that he was going to end the wars in Gaza and in Ukraine.

It will be wrapped into the story today of Donald Trump's first 100 days here.
This is the Wall Street Journal front page right now.
If you take a look at it, the U.S. economy contracted at 0.3 percentage rate in the first quarter.
The decline in the GDP was the steepest since the first quarter of 2022.
Imports surged as businesses rushed to stock up ahead of the tariffs while consumers held their spending in check.
That's what you're seeing at the Wall Street Journal website if you go there.
And members of Congress and members of the media picking up on this story already.
RoCanna, the Democratic congressman with this ex-post: It turns out that when you launch a trade war with blanket tariffs, lay off federal workers en masse, cancel federal contracts, and reduce skilled immigration, you will have negative GDP growth.
Trump turned a 2.4 percentage growth into minus 0.3 percent.
Econ 101 is what the Democratic congressman wrote.
And this from political commentator George Conway, he sent out this ex-post.
It's hard to imagine that the second quarter of 2025 won't be worse, which means he says the Trump recession has already begun.

Let's start with there.

Well, the first assessment of that is that he's suing law firms, colleges, and media companies.
He's taking students.
He's taking students, judges, and children that have cancer and sending them overseas.
He's using the Hispanics for scapegoats.
And he's aligning us with authoritarian countries which is not in our best interest and all of this has taken place within the first 100 days and there's a lot of books out there that have been written about authoritarianism and you know I suggest some people go out there and read them.

How would you assess the last 100 days?

You know, I think these first 100 days since President Trump has been back in office have been the exact opposite of what the American people want and frankly, what he promised.
You know, costs and chaos, corruption are all on the rise.
And when you combine that with the unfettered access and power that he's given Elon Musk to cut programs that people rely on for their health care, for their food assistance, and so much more, it's no wonder that he has the worst numbers of any president in their first 100 days.

For being a Democrat then on Capitol Hill as this goes on, what does it mean for the Democrats in both the House, well, in your case, the House, but also the Senate?
What does it mean on pushing back against the administration?

Yeah, I look at this as a three-pronged strategy.
Democrats are taking the fight to try to mitigate the damage of this administration every single day.
Certainly our most effective tool has been in the courts.
Over 200 cases have been brought in the first 100 days with over 100 injunctions and restraining orders on some of these policies.
We're taking it to the floor.
You know, we have a very slim margin in the House.
And so we're making sure that we put the pressure on Republicans.
We don't want them to be complicit or rubber stamping this disastrous agenda.
And just last month, we brought down a rule on the House floor.
And that caused Speaker Johnson to have a temper tantrum and basically send us all home.
But then third, we're traveling the country.
We have Democrats in every district, our own, and also in Republican districts, where they're hiding from their constituents because they don't want to face the music of this administration.
And we're offering another option of what we would do and how we can fight back and win.
So we're not waiting until those midterms in 2026.
We're bringing the fight every single day.

One of the specifics that I guess Democrats in the House will have to consider is work on this legislative bill, including the bill that would include a tax cut.
You were quoted as saying if Medicaid cuts are part of that, you were saying the Democrats would make it as, quote, painful as possible.
Can you elaborate on that?

Yeah, well, I think people are looking at the next 100 days and this Republican House plowing forward with a strategy that would rip health care away from millions of people in this country.
That is deeply unpopular.
And so we know that we're having those fights in committee rooms, but very shortly we're going to be having that debate on the House floor.
And people are going to understand exactly what's at stake.
So look, when I think about this administration, and the president liked to ask the question on the campaign trail last year, are you better off than you were four years ago?
Well, I would just pose the question, are you better off than you were 100 days ago?
And are you feeling good about the next 100 days?
And unless you're a billionaire donor to the Trump campaign, that answer is no.

So is part of the strategy just what you'll say, the type of rhetoric you use?
Is there an administrative or legislative strategy you'll try to employ?
Can you elaborate on that?

Well, I think first and foremost, we don't even have the details yet.
I sit on the Energy and Commerce Committee and the Medicaid cuts that could be upwards of nearly a trillion dollars.
We don't even have the details on that plan yet.
But we're ready because we know where those buckets of costs are that they are targeting.
So we're going to fight that battle in the committee room first, making sure that we could use every tool that we have to make sure that they don't move forward with their plan.
And then most importantly, that the American people know what's at stake.
And you asked about the first 100 days and the promises that this administration has made.
I'll just point out three of them, right?
The costs.
You know, people right now are struggling.
This president promised to lower costs on day one.
And instead, prices are rising.
This reckless trade war is actually, it could add $2,000 to $4,000 annually to people's out-of-pocket costs, all while they have deep anxiety around their retirement savings.
Secondly, he promised to cut government waste.
Instead, Elon Musk has wasted $135 billion in taxpayer dollars, all just to cut $63 billion in government spending.
And then third, this president was going to make America healthy again.
And RFK Jr. is actively dismantling our health care system.
He's cutting research that patients rely on and doing nothing to end the most deadliest measles outbreak that we've had in decades, killing kids in Texas.
So I think the slogan for this administration isn't promises made, promises kept.
It feels to the American people like these promises have been broken.

You probably heard the comments from the Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker recently about his own party, the Democratic Party.
He described them as do-nothing Democrats, do-nothing political types.
What do you think of that assessment, especially pushing back against the president?

Look, I think we're using every tool.
I mean, one, we're attesting this in the courts, our separation of powers and the independence of our court system, and we're having a lot of wins there.
That doesn't happen by accident.
Democrats are mobilizing those plaintiffs and are working hand in glove with our Democratic attorney generals to bring those lawsuits.
Secondly, we are bringing that fight to the floor in the Senate and in the House, and we've had some wins.
We've brought down some important rules, and we're taking advantage of the low margin and the deeply unpopular policies that these Republicans are rubber stamping for this administration.
And third, we're bringing our case directly to the people.
We've won a couple of important special elections this year, and there's going to be a few more bellwethers.
But we're going to take the case to the American people.
We have town meetings in our districts every time we're home.
We're mobilizing so that we can take advantage of every opportunity that we have.

The question is, are you better off than you were 100 days ago?
And I would say overwhelmingly yes.
He has stopped.
He has stopped illegal immigration at the border.
And we were told by Mayorkas, the border secure, the border secure for three and a half years.
And you could watch MSNBC, the border secure, turn it over to Fox.
They would have a drone showing a border crossing in Texas where people were just flowing across this.
And the press didn't ask them about this.
The thing that people don't talk about the border is the fentanyl.
We lost 300,000 to 400,000 lives during the Biden administration due to fentanyl overdoses.
Many of these people did not know they were taking fentanyl.
And I don't know that that's going to stop because these cartels will figure out other ways to get it in.
But that has significantly lowered that.
We lost 3,000, less than 3,000 people on 9-11.
300,000.
Why doesn't anybody talk about that?

Well, can I ask you then?
If immigration is the thing, how is it better off for you specifically?

I have a niece who is a heroin addict, and she's recovering her and addict.
She's doing very good.
But she might fail, and she might get heroin inflation with fentanyl.

And again, You know, Trump, I wish sometimes he's got to stop talking about Joe Biden.
That is very unprofessional, and I think everybody's tired about it.
And I'm going to be fair, and I'm going to be honest when I critique him.
And I think that everybody, the General Accounting Office put out that in 2023, they accounted for $650 billion that was lost to fraud or mismanagement.
So everybody agrees.
There's a lot of fan we could cut.

The problem is when we start cutting it, people start screaming.

The Democrats and people on the left are all going to hate him.
He could save the world.
And they would say it wasn't done the right way.
He's only had 100 days to do what he's doing.

You know, it might take three years before the economy really starts booming and things start getting better in this country because it took four years for the Biden administration to tear down the country to where it was with gas over $5 a gallon, high inflation.
All the inflation that we're dealing with now was brought on by the Biden administration.
And so now Trump is starting off at a higher level.
He needs to correct everything so he can get inflation to fall.
I don't care what they say.
He hasn't had enough time.
They just don't like the man and they don't like his policy.

And he's going to get the country working again and the price is down eventually.
But it's not going to happen.

The former central banker's ability to negotiate with the U.S. president was a chief focus of his campaign, as they note in that headline.
I want to go to the Guardian newspaper.
Their headline focuses on what's happening right now.
The U.S. economy shrinks in the first quarter of the Trump 2.0 amid sweeping tariffs is what they say there.
To the independent also in the United States and the United Kingdom as well, forgive me.
They focus on what they're calling the missing Melania.
While Donald Trump has barely been out of the news, the first lady has hardly been spotted.
They write, even after a public show of affection in Italy at the Pope's funeral this weekend, the couple reportedly went their separate ways the minute that they landed.
That's again out of the United Kingdom.
We'll take you to France now.
The Liberation is the newspaper there.
Their headline translates to 100 days without end.
To the South China Post out of Hong Kong, this is their headline.
Trump's executive order, power grab, leaves official Washington gasping to keep up.

Now to the economy and the food market, people, a lot of people don't know.
My husband used to work in a store or work in stores, grocery stores, and sold to them and stuff.
Stores buy large quantities.

They bought high.
They are not going to bring the prices down just because we want them to go down.
They have to empty their warehouses with them making a profit on it.

This is what Donald Trump had to say on True Social.
This is Biden's stock market, not Trump's.
I didn't take over until January 20th.
Tariffs will soon start kicking in, and companies are starting to move into the USA in record numbers.
Our country will boom, but we have to get rid of the Biden overhang.
This will take a while, has nothing to do with tariffs, only that he left us with bad numbers.
But when the boom begins, it will be like no other.

I know at GW there was like a few students who their international visas were taken away without their knowledge.

And then also our funding, funding for research and funding for other things at our school is under attack.
Yeah, and also just because the economy is bad right now and all of these government jobs have been cut in DC.
A lot of people don't have internships for the summer when usually that's a normal thing for GW students.
Everybody usually is gainfully employed.
So the fact that most people are having to go back home this summer because they don't have jobs is really sad, honestly.
So, and we're juniors.
We're about to graduate next year.

And so just because of things like huge tariffs, many of the people who really survive on, how do you say that?
Oh, gosh, my English is terrible, even though from America.

Guangtang.
Factory.
Factory jobs in China have shut down so much that so many people are just unemployed now.
And those sorts of changes affect a broader base than just the American people in a huge way.

What would be the message that the White House is giving as far as these first 100 days?

Well, this president is very quickly delivering on the promises that he made to the American people.
Remember, this president pledged to cool inflation.
We are seeing that happen already.
Gas prices are down.
He pledged to secure the southern border.
That happened in basically a month.
Border crossings are at historic lows.
He pledged to launch the largest deportation of migrant illegal aliens in history.
That has happened already.
We're seeing so many migrant illegal aliens being deported at historic rates.
He is quickly delivering on his promises, and the best is yet to come in the form of more trade deals, more peace deals, and more tax deals that are all going to tremendously benefit the American people.

When it comes to matters of the economy, it was reported this morning there was a slight shrinking in the GDP.
What's the response of the White House to that?

Well, look, if you break it down, there is an outsized influence of January in that report.
Remember, this president wasn't elected until January 20th.
The GDP is a backward-looking indicator, but all the other indicators that we do have from that report and others show that there is a really positive trend for this president's new golden age that he is unleashing.
Investment is up 22%.
That is a testament to all these conversations he's having with 130 countries all around the world trying to make better trade deals with this president.
because companies know the way that you'll face no tariffs 100% is by manufacturing here in America.
So we are seeing those investments roll in.
We are seeing private sector job growth increase.
We are seeing retail shopping increase.
All the signs trend that the new golden age is underway thanks to this president's economic leader.

Will the president be addressing this GDP number out specifically today or will there be a press conference on these issues?

Well the president is hosting a cabinet meeting and of course as you and the press all know the president is certainly not shy and always willing to answer questions.
I mean this is his fourth cabinet meeting that has been open to the press.
He answered 20 times more questions than Biden ever did in his entire term in those first three cabinet meetings.
So I'm sure that your colleagues in the media will be happy to ask that and he's always happy to take those questions.

Besides that cabinet also at the White House today and expect a meeting with CEOs.
Tell us about that.

Well yes as I mentioned this president is incredibly proud of his record of investments into this country.
So we are hosting an Invest in America event with some of these companies that have made really significant pledges to increase their manufacturing here in the United States.
As I said, thanks to decades of unfair trading practices by Democrats and Republicans, we are seeing our manufacturing industry totally hollowed out.
And so this president wants to bring manufacturing back to the United States.
And so we are so excited to host companies like NVIDIA, companies like Johnson ⁇ Johnson, who are either coming to the United States or they are expanding their operations in the United States because number one, they want to take part in this president's new golden age or they want to face no tariffs.
And so this president's economic agenda is already paying off and we are so excited to host those great companies here today.

Let's talk specifically about your job.
What does it mean to be Deputy White House press secretary?

Well, I answer questions all day, every day.
Sometimes I get to do fun things like go on C-SPAN, but most of my day is spent working directly with the press.
As I said, this president is extremely transparent.
He's always willing to answer questions himself, which certainly makes my job a lot easier.
So folks get the answers they need and the American people get the answers they need from him.
But otherwise, I am just answering questions from the media day in and day out.
This president is certainly leading from the front on that effort.
That's why he is constantly taking questions from the press.
That's why our press team also has refocused its vision to also include new media, audiences that have traditionally been left behind by past White House administrations.
And so I'm just answering questions all day, every day and taking part in the really great transparency initiative that is led by this president.
pedro echevarria
Those new media outlets that you've brought into the White House, how objective do you think they are as far as what they report on or if they're friendly to the president on what they report on?

I think they're very objective.
I think, of course, we look at a number of outlets that we have hosted in our new media seat.
The first one was Axios, right?
So we are hosting a number of outlets in that new media seat, also hosting new media briefings.
Again, this is a part of reaching out to new audiences, not just new audiences also, but a lot of audiences that have massive followings, often dwarf those of legacy media outlets, right?
But they've just been traditionally left behind by past White Houses, past politicians, and past candidates.
This president partially got here because of his willingness to reach out to people like Joe Rogan, Theo Vaughan, individuals with massive audiences that have been truly untapped by past presidents.
And so we are certainly continuing that strategy here at the White House, making sure we're reaching all Americans, not just those who watch or listen to legacy media.

How would you describe the White House's relationship with the press?

I think it's pretty fair.
I mean, I think the press largely know that, of course, that they will never totally give the president his credit that he is due for all that he is accomplishing on behalf of this country.
But I will say, you know, I think they recognize a lot of the time that this president was given a overwhelming mandate by the American people to carry out the promises that he made on the campaign trail.
And so we are always ready to answer those questions.
He, of course, is always willing to take tough questions.
That's why he had Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic in the White House.
And so, you know, we are always ready to hold the press to that same standard that we hold ourselves to.
As Caroline started off her first briefing, we hold ourselves to a standard of truth.
We certainly expect the press to follow that suit.
And so we'll call them out if they don't.
But I think it is a mutual understanding that, you know what, this president was given an overwhelming mandate by the American people to deliver on these promises.
And that's exactly what he's doing.

Let's talk about how you got to the job.
Talk a little bit about the road you traveled to get to the point of being a deputy press secretary.
What were the highlights?

Yeah, so there's truly no substitute for hard work.
I started by knocking doors on campaign trail.
It was my summer job every year since I was 15 years old.
And so I think you truly develop a level of grit and perseverance and hard work when you are literally willing to sweat it out and knock on doors and talk to the American people.
And so I think that's a really great way to make sure you're having conversations with people, right?
There's no better practice for what I'm doing right now with you than really getting out, knocking on doors and talking to the American people, listening to their concerns every single day.

How did you get this job specifically?

Well, so I cut my teeth.
I grew up in Northern Virginia, but I cut my teeth in Wisconsin politics, which of course is a very competitive purple state.
And so I started out, I worked for the president's 2020 campaign in Wisconsin, ended up working for the Wisconsin Republican Party, Tim Michaels, who is a Trump endorsed gubernatorial candidate in the state, worked for Congressman Derek Van Ordin, who is also excellent, also a Trump endorsed candidate recently, this cycle as well.
And so now here we are working for the RNC hand in hand with Caroline Levitt in the 2024 campaign down in West Palm Beach.
And so it's truly an honor to have been part of so much of these promises that have been made along the way and now these promises being made.

What's the most surprising part about your job to you?

I'll be honest, I don't think too much surprises me because I think, of course, there's a difference in working for past White Houses, right?
This is not the White House under the previous administration that was calling lids and telling press to go home at 3 p.m.
Working for President Trump is a truly unique experience.
And so thankfully, from being at the RNC and being on the campaign trail this past cycle, I feel a lot more adept and used to the pace of this president.
He is always working.
Of course, he was in Michigan yesterday, got back late last night, and this is just an extension of the campaign trail where he was hitting four, five, six states a day.
And so I think it helps to be a lot really used to that pace and to this energy that this president brings to the job.

Hey, Joe, about 15 minutes left in our program today, and want to keep viewers aware of what else they can see over the course of a very busy 100th day of the Trump presidency.
And it's not just in the executive branch, it's a busy day in the judicial branch as well.
Starting in 15 minutes over on C-SPAN 3, we'll show you the Supreme Court's oral arguments in the case of the legality of religious charter schools.
The case involves a Catholic online school, which was given the status of a charter school in the state of Oklahoma.
We're going to be airing those arguments so you can hear them on C-SPAN 3, also on C-SPAN.org and the free C-SPANNOW video app.
This afternoon, 2.30 p.m. Eastern, Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois and other Judiciary Committee Democrats are holding a meeting to take a look at President Trump's January 6th pardons.
They're going to be hearing from former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn and D.C. Metro Police Officer Daniel Hodges as part of that event.
You can watch that live on C-SPAN 3 again, 2.30 p.m. Eastern.
And then tonight, former Democratic presidential nominee, former vice president Kamala Harris, will speak at an event for the group EMERGE, an organization that recruits and supports female Democratic candidates.
She's expected to address the first 100 days of the Trump administration.
10:45 p.m. Eastern Time, that's going to be here on C-SPAN, also on C-SPAN.org and the free C-SPAN Now video app.
She's likely gonna be talking about the economy today, especially in the wake of those estimates that came out today on the first quarter GDP shrinking at an annual rate of 0.3 percentage points.
Democrats on Capitol Hill already talking about it and tweeting and sending social media posts about it, including Congressman Darren Soto of Florida, the Democratic congressman saying President Trump is barreling us toward a recession in record time.
This was the worst quarter since 2021 and Trump shows no signs of correcting course.
Another member of Congress from the Democratic side of the aisle, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, saying it's only been 100 days, but Donald Trump already managed to sink the economy and spark widespread fears of recession.
And then Congressman Mark Pocan, the Democrat from Wisconsin, saying, please, just too much winning and pointing towards, again, the stories out today about first quarter GDP.
It was yesterday on Capitol Hill, another Democratic member of Congress, a prominent one, Corey Booker of New Jersey, taking Donald Trump to task on the eve of his 100th day in office.

So, 100 days.
I do not need to speak.
Schumer does not need to speak.
The truth of the matter is, the American public has already rendered their verdict.
This is the most failing failure, fantastically, of any president in four generations.
The American public has already made it clear, Donald Trump, you have failed us.
He has the lowest approval rating of any president in 80 years.
And why?
Because he has consistently said one thing and done another.
He has lied to the American people and betrayed those people who put their act of civic trust their vote for him.
How so?
Well, first and foremost, he said that he would manage the economy better.
He said that he would lower people's costs on day one.
Across the board, across the board, we see Americans' prices for home goods, for baby carriages, for groceries going up and up and up.
And he has so tanked the economy that there are thousands of Americans right now who thought they would retire this year because their 401ks had enough resources for them to do that that are putting off their retirement.
Number two is he said he would drain the swamp.
Well, this is a staggering lie.
This president has literally brought in the greatest corruption in the White House ever.
Exhibit one, frankly, is this meme coin that he created.
He has literally done something that is so unconscionable that he is selling attendance at the White House to people who buy his meme corn, which is a way for people just to deposit money.
This president has already grifted millions and millions of dollars from his position while costs are going up.
This president has eviscerated people like inspector generals who were put into place to call out corruption.
Number three, this president has been a foreign policy failure.
He again told the American public, I will bring an end to the Ukrainian war on day one, to the invasion of Ukraine.
And what he has done instead is he has called a hero a dictator and coddled up to the dictator in Putin.
In addition to that, he has alienated our allies, said in the most demeaning and degrading way that he was going to make Canada a 51st state, and gave license to China to have influence across the globe as we, through our cuts in USAID, have retreated.
We've sent a few people over after the disaster in Myanmar who got fired while they were doing the job, while the Chinese stepped up and brought millions and millions of dollars of resources to people aid.
That used to be America.

So I've been listening to a lot of people, and I don't remember the same criticism of Joe Biden for four years when inflation hit 9%.
I don't remember the Democrats jumping up and down talking about how he was destroying the country.
Mr. Booker, who just talked about prices, he forgot to talk about how gas prices are down, egg prices are down, mortgage rates are down, interest rates are down.
Maybe he forgot that, but that probably doesn't affect him.
To talk about the millionaires, I don't remember him talking about Joe Biden getting millions from China.
I don't remember him talking about his son making millions of dollars sitting on a board that he had no knowledge of what he was doing.

Well, I don't think Trump has accomplished a lot other than executive orders in the first hundred days.
And a lot of those are flying in the face of the U.S. Constitutional law for the president and other federal laws.
So it's a very strong power that we adopted.
And that's not what our constitution falls for.
But I think I've been able to beg the right to put a divide on the And it's because I was employed in a state prison for the better part of a decade and a half.
And part of our training was being able to fine-tune our ability to see manipulation of other people.
And while he's been called out the bullying, he does an excellent job of manipulating public opinion.
And there's a book that I read many times over the course of 15 years I was deployed in the state prison system that is called Games Criminals Play.
And it gives you live sort of scenarios of how an inmate or a criminal manipulates people both when he's serving his time, but also when he's out at the stout control.

Yeah, well, I'm taking from the first 100 days that this administration no longer wants people of color in the military because when I was in the Marine Corps in 1972, I had people in my platoon with from Mexico, Honduras, Dominican Republic, places like that, that when American people was going to Canada.
So now it's going to come a time when people are going to have to question their sons and daughters.
They're going to put on the uniform, and they have to ask themselves, what are they defending and why?
And I have to get a correction.
They no longer want your daughters.
They only want your sons.
So it's going to be another war.
And who's going to fight it?
It's going to be the courtstan.
Because anybody of color with a uniform on, they will not be looked upon as favorable anymore.

Last caller just made a comment about Trump not respecting people of color.
It is the Democrats who have had a long and sordid history of doing evil things to the people of color, starting back in the late 1700s when Democrats wanted slaves added to the census for the purpose of increasing their power in congressional representation.
In my opinion, they're doing the same thing with importing all of these illegal aliens to skew the next census so they can change the congressional districts to make it more advantageous to the Democratic Party and to create a generational dependency class in this country that'll be dependent upon them supplying them with food and housing and everything else at the expense of the rest of us taxpayers.

Pedro, I just wanted to jump in and let our viewers know.
You were talking to Anna Kelly, the White House Deputy Press Secretary, about the cabinet meeting that President Trump is holding today at 11 a.m. Eastern time.
Just want to make sure our viewers knew that they can watch that.
We're going to be airing that here on C-SPAN again, 11 a.m. Eastern, also on C-SPAN.org and the free C-SPAN video app.
And it's interesting that that's taking place today, in part because it was yesterday that President Trump sent out this true social post in which he was focusing on cabinet meetings.
He was apparently watching Fox and Friends live their audience interviews about the president's first 100 days.
And he quotes one of those audience members saying that she really loves the cabinet meetings.
He, Trump, lets the American people into those rooms.
We get to observe the questions and the answers and know what they're doing.
It's really a way that he connects with the public.
And so, President Trump attempting that connection once again today with today's cabinet meeting.
Also, on President Trump's agenda today on his first 100th day in office, it's that News Nation town hall.
That's happening tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern, sitting down with Chris Cuomo in that town hall.
And it's going to be a busy day throughout the day at the White House and throughout the day here in Washington.

I appreciate your program.
I would say this first 100 days has been a disaster for the citizens of the United States.
But it's been good for Trump and the wealthy people who are surrounding him.
During Biden, there were over 15 million jobs created.
Right now, with Trump, we've lost over 2 million jobs.
Unemployment was 3.8, and now it's at 6.3.
Economic growth under Biden was 18% more than that.
And right now, with Trump, it's a negative number, 3.4.
And the trade deficit was, under Biden, 1.6 positive.
And under Trump, it's a negative of 40%.
I would say he's failing the American people.
He's just helping the wealthy to get more of what they want.
And he's destroyed the goodwill that we had with other countries, our allies.
And we're pretty much going to be on our own now.
