CSPAN - Washington Journal Rep. John McGuire Aired: 2025-04-02 Duration: 01:56 === Tariffs and Trade Imbalance (01:55) === [00:00:00] That come from so many different countries. [00:00:02] You know, there's a widget from Japan, there's steel from China. [00:00:07] There's so many different things that go into even just a car from so many different countries that a tariff on one of those is going to raise the price astronomically. [00:00:17] And I think that you hit on a point here that we the trade imbalance that Trump talks about a lot is concerning and it does need to be addressed. [00:00:25] But I think Republicans and Democrats alike on the Hill and a lot of economists as well are worried that this sort of your curial approach to tariffs that Trump is approaching, this kind of hodgepodge, using it as a strong-arm real estate negotiating tactic and then following through with it is not necessarily the way to do that. [00:00:45] You know, we're going to learn a lot more about the fallout from those later this afternoon once Trump starts signing those executive orders, levying those tariffs. [00:00:53] You can find the work of our guest and his colleagues at nationaljournal.com/slash hotline, Kurt Beto, the editor of the hotline. [00:01:01] Mr. Beto, thanks for your time this morning. [00:01:03] Really appreciate it. [00:01:04] Thank you all for having me. [00:01:05] Have a good one. [00:01:06] Joining us for a brief bit to talk about issues of Capitol Hill is Representative John McGuire, Representative Virginia. [00:01:11] He serves the 5th District, also a member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committees. [00:01:16] Representative McGuire, good morning. [00:01:18] Thanks for joining us. [00:01:19] Hey, good morning, Pedro. [00:01:20] Thanks for having me this morning. [00:01:21] Tariffs, the topic of the day. [00:01:23] What's your take on what the administration might propose and what ultimately results from that plan? [00:01:30] Sure. [00:01:30] Well, today's the big day. [00:01:31] And, you know, you've heard President Trump talk about President McKinley and how he used tariffs to make America very wealthy. [00:01:38] You know, many countries for too long have been taking advantage of our country. [00:01:42] And these tariffs are going to make, I think it's going to level the playing field and make business fair. [00:01:48] And I'll give you an example. [00:01:49] You probably just heard the news that Israel has announced that they're going to eliminate all tariffs on American goods and services.
