After being confirmed as Secretary of HHS, RFK Jr started installing his cabal of wellness influencers and contrarian doctors across the government's many public health agencies. And that means they have to apologize for their boss. Derek and Julian listen in on some of the most outrageous takes so far.

You ready?
Let's do it.
All right.
We're recording this on Monday as I'm going to be away for a few days this week.
It is an upcoming holiday weekend.
So I'm pretty sure that by the time Saturday rolls around, there's probably going to be a whole new wave of Kennedy news.
But before we roll the clips of his believers playing Twister with their own minds to defend him...
I just want to recap a few things that have happened in recent weeks.
Kennedy ordered a review of Mifepristone in what is widely believed to appease anti-abortion groups, and people are speculating that it's going to lead to a ban of that drug, especially since he said Donald Trump will make the final decision.
Amazing.
And it's a pharmaceutical that is not testosterone replacement therapy, so he probably has a grievance against it.
Kennedy ordered the FDA to remove ingestible fluoride products from the market.
He claims they lead to brain damage.
Of course, there's no proof of that, especially at the dosage level that's available in supplements.
He also, of course, recommended that states and regions remove fluoride from the drinking water, and at least a few are looking into it or have done so.
During a congressional hearing recently, he said people should not take medical advice from him, which is a pretty damning statement.
Given that he is the nation's leading public health official.
When Chris Murphy, during that hearing, called Kennedy out for saying there's fetal debris in the MMR vaccine, Kennedy interrupted him to say that there is.
And there's not.
There's no fetal debris in the MMR vaccine.
And finally, Kennedy admitted that he had no clue what was cut under his purview.
When he was told that funding was cut, for example, for domestic violence prevention, he said his understanding is that it wasn't cut despite the fact that the Justice Department canceled or reduced grants of over $800 million with at least $77 million coming from the Office for Victims of Crime funds that supported direct and indirect services for domestic violence and trafficking victims.
Yeah, that's quite a rundown and who knows what's going to happen just in the next few days.
Bobby is probably, to me, the best example of flooding the zone from the wellness pseudoscience conspiracy domain.
Like, he says random outrageous things every time he opens his mouth.
But we're now fully in the time period where every now and again, one of those crazy, ill-informed statements leads to devastating impacts in the real world.
The Mifepristone comments seem to come straight from, like, Project 2025, right?
This Christian unitary executive power.
Trump will be the one who has the final say over women's bodies.
But cloaked in this Maha concern over bad chemicals and dangerous big pharma drugs, never mind like I did my shot of tea this morning and then went swimming in a creek that was filled with toxic bacteria.
He's trying to get fluoride out of the water, which the science says is not only safe but beneficial, but then also ban people supplementing with it should they choose, which is supposed to be like their bellwether, right?
So it's a rare case in which you and I are probably on the side of the supplement salesman.
Well, I also want to say Dax Devlin Ross, former four-time guest on the pod.
One of my closest friends.
He lives at one of the entrances of Rock Creek Park.
I've gone hiking with him through there.
I would not go into that water.
So the fact that he did, well, you know, it's just not surprising.
I also want to flag that this Monday I'll be doing a bonus on Cali Means at the political conference.
I've clipped from it today, but it's really important because he kind of lays out Maha's agenda for Medicare and Medicaid in the clearest way yet, which is deregulation and pushing the money into the private markets.
So look out for that Monday.
And then this coming Thursday, we're sort of going to do an overview of Kennedy.
I know it's a lot of Kennedy, but it really is super important given how much health we cover on this podcast and what his administration is doing right now.
So we've been covering him for years on this podcast.
We know how unqualified for this role Kennedy is, and we're watching with horror as he dismantles our public health apparatus.
Now, let's turn to those who are abetting him.
One thing unites pretty much all defenders of Kennedy that I reviewed a moment ago.
They all immediately deflect any criticisms with one of two criticisms.
Usually both, but here they are.
And the other one is, why are you even questioning those things when Bobby is finally asking about health that everyone else refuses to ask?
First off, you don't have to agree with someone on every point to agree with them on other issues.
This is the purity test problem that, Julian, you and I have discussed for years.
Let's be clear.
That is not what's going on here.
It's not like the man has different ideas of where federal funding should go or how to tackle disease treatments, for example.
He recently claimed the Biden administration straight up QAnon child sex trafficked hundreds of thousands of children in a cabinet meeting.
He also talked about electromagnetic radiation in a list of possible causes of autism during a press conference.
We're beyond crazy uncle territory here.
Oh, there you go again.
He says one thing that you don't agree with and you're like going to throw him out the window.
Yeah.
You know, more and more of this, I think it's telling in terms of why Trump likes Bobby so much because they're both just wild guys who say lots of crazy sounding stuff that their apologists don't always agree with or apparently take seriously, which they should.
But they're nonetheless brilliant.
They're brave out-of-the-box saviors who are finally addressing all the things that have gone unaddressed by the deep state, right?
There was a moment when Alex Clark was talking with Will Cole, and she actually says...
Who cares?
At least we'll get food dyes out.
Something to that effect.
Yeah, totally.
So there is some self-awareness there, but honestly, the finally asking questions trope is just bullshit.
Kennedy cut funding for the scientific experts that have devoted their careers to actually asking the questions they say they're asking for the first time just so he can answer them in a way that he sees fit.
Let's start with what I flagged a moment ago.
That is Kali Means, who recently spent 35 minutes with Politico journalist Dasha Burns at an event called the Politico Healthcare Summit 2025.
As I said, I'll be unpacking this in depth on Monday, but here's Burns asking about Kennedy firing a quarter of the HHS workforce.
Why not then use the power that you guys have to push the existing infrastructure in that direction instead of slashing it altogether?
It's not slashing.
It's taking it back to 2017 levels.
That's not slashing.
The amount of bureaucrats More like 2002 levels, actually.
In many cases, it's actually just not that much, but it is cutting What is it?
20,000 people?
It's taking the HHS back to 68,000 employees?
It is absolutely like the idea that Bobby Kennedy should not come in and make dramatic changes to the leadership and the personnel.
At these authorities that have overseen an abject devastation of American health, which the lobbyists in this room do not have the humility to admit that we have gone completely wrong.
The lobbyists in this room laughing when we have the sickest children in the developed world.
If you guys, if that is your attitude, and your attitude is to tell the Maha Moms that their votes and their voice is not legitimate, that we need dramatic changes.
This is like the, did you even say thank you and why aren't you wearing a suit kind of version, like the newly minted, like an expert on government agencies.
You can be the professional one here, Derek.
I'm just going to let it rip because I want to punch this guy right on the nose.
The righteous certainty around this completely manufactured crisis, the sickest children that we've ever had and you've presided over and blaming this on on.
And he and his grifting cronies just have free reign now to monetize, like you were saying, to push this into an oligarchical kind of takeover where you privatize these aspects of public health.
He just has no shame.
The idea that America has the sickest kids in the developed world because of a group of lobbyists who supposedly allowed food and pesticide and vaccine companies to poison all of the kids.
With the supposed full knowledge or abject incompetence of tens of thousands of actually qualified public servants who are being fired, it's just slanderous and I don't know how someone like this sleeps at night.
I agree with that.
I went through and there are at least a dozen statistics he cites, which are just wrong.
And it's not hard to actually look into it.
Remember, Callie is, along with people like Will Cole and Courtney Swan, they all group posted, the fact checkers are against you, some shit like that, because they don't want their facts checked because they don't actually present facts.
He does this all the time.
So there's the straight-up statistics that he gets wrong all the time.
I've watched too many hours of him on podcasts at this point.
And then there's just the deflection and redirection that he does.
So Dasha Burns...
And every single time, he just didn't answer.
He said, there are so many lobbyists in this room who are trying to do this.
Or he said something to the effect, well, you just flagged about the sickest kids.
He gets statistics wrong about the children as well.
So it is complete Trumpian, the way that he does that.
He knows.
That he can do that on the podcast.
This was actually a situation where someone was pressing him.
So he couldn't get away with it, but he didn't care.
He just kept going through.
And you said flooding the zone.
That's just what he did.
It was a firehood of falsehoods over and over.
And Dasha, while I think she did a good job, it's impossible to keep up with someone like that in that situation.
And I will say the one thing that kind of pissed me off is she called him a nutrition expert at some point because he focuses on this.
And I'm like, no, he's a businessman.
He's not a nutrition expert.
But overall, I think she did a really good job.
He's the brother of the other non-nutrition expert.
That's why he's sitting there.
And he also kept putting his hand up to stop her from talking.
It was a very white man stopping woman moment.
It was really, the whole thing is really disgusting.
and I can't believe I had to sit through that.
But let's move on because I can...
I want to revisit NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya talking to Barry Weiss, which you and I, Julian, covered for a recent brief.
This is Bhattacharya's response to Weiss's question about how he personally feels about Kennedy.
I admire him, actually, Barry.
I think he has said that for the last 20 years, he wakes up in the morning asking, how can I make the lives of children better, healthier?
How can I make the lives of How can we address the chronic health needs of the American people?
And I believe him.
I see every time I've had an interaction with him, that is what he wants to do.
It's like he wants to ask, you know, I just take probably the most controversial example of what he said.
Things about having to do with autism.
He has ideas about what causes autism.
But I'll tell you from a scientific point of view, first, there's been a tremendous increase in autism diagnoses.
And I look at the data, you can't avoid seeing it.
Huge increases in autism diagnoses.
And everyone has their pet theory for why.
I wonder where and for how long he's practiced ass-kissing that well, because it's very, very good.
It's very thoughtful.
It's very considerate.
And it just makes me wonder if he's really that backward in his scientific reasoning about data.
There's a lot of talk about how we're at the zenith of an anti-elite populist power coming from people like Barry Weiss, with so many people in Trump's cabinet actually just being completely unqualified or inexperienced.
But there's a really important personality trait that goes with stepping into such lofty roles as a grifter.
And I would include Bhattacharya in that category.
You have to be willing to agree with your boss and then agree with the contradiction that he may well spout five seconds later if his name is RFK Jr.
I'm going to do it.
I'm going to go back to Cali Means for a second because You can't resist.
At one point, Dasha Burns asks, what are your policy moves?
Like, what is it?
And he says, well, we hired Marty Macri, Jay Bhattacharya, Dr. Oz.
Dr. Oz is an incredible human being.
That was his answer.
And that is exactly what they're doing.
That's how Bhattacharya starts right here.
He cares about the kids.
They're not laying out policy because they can't do that.
Because the policy is privatizing healthcare.
That is what they are doing.
And they have to go to these great lengths to make it seem like that's what they're not doing.
So they always turn to anecdotes about how wonderful the people they're working with is.
And it's really nefarious and really disgusting, especially...
And the problem is we're in this environment where the people who get shit done that actually help people are just repeating boring bureaucracy that does the work.
Public health is proactive.
It's not reactive.
And because they're not actually doing public health, they don't have anything foundational to work from.
And so they have to do this just...
Speaking of which, we're going to stay on Weiss for one more moment because she had a conversation with functional medicine practitioner Mark Hyman and this is a master class in redirection and misinformation with absolutely no pushback.
Barry Weiss, I give her credit sometimes because I do think she sticks on some points.
Her and her wife, Nellie Bowles, are completely unqualified to talk about health, yet they have all these people talk about health and they're not able to actually push back or come with good statistics or facts ever.
And we should also note that Hyman is reportedly one of Kennedy's closest friends.
So just keep that in mind while you're listening.
Do you understand why people are skeptical of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.?
Sure, I mean, So anybody reading that is going to go, wow, this is a journalist.
This is a reputable outlet.
They know what they're talking about.
This must be true.
And nobody bothers to actually listen to what he says, to read what he says, to take the time to spend hours studying what he said, and actually understand the nuances of what he's doing.
Do you think it's fair to describe him as a vaccine skeptic?
No, I don't.
I mean, you know, when you look at how he got into this, there were mothers who were attending his lectures about rivers.
Yeah, nobody has taken the time to really look carefully at what he says.
I can't fantasize about punching Barry on the nose, but my God, Derek.
I don't know if you saw this, her free press.
Published this big, fawning, and self-congratulatory article on the 13th, so just last week, which profiled Bhattacharya, Marty Macri, and the new Pick Me Kid on the Block, as we've been predicting for a while now, Vinay Prasad, saying that they're the ones who challenged the public health orthodoxy in the pages of the free press, But now they have the power to actually fix things.
The problem is...
And the things they were right about, it's all of these bad faith gimmies, right?
Like the first vaccines didn't actually protect against later variants, so we were lied to by Fauci.
And then the gaslighting here on RFK is just obscene because we know for a fact he spent almost two decades actively engaged in anti-vax activism.
To even call him a vaccine skeptic is a euphemism and Barry does that.
And then Bhattacharya says, "Oh no, no, well, he's not even a vaccine skeptic." It's just, it's ridiculous.
I'm going to stick with this metaphor that they are the dogs who caught the car because they are.
They've caught the car and they have no clue what to do now.
And that's just what we're hearing.
We hear it in every interview at this point, especially the ones where they're in front of actual journalists where it's Kennedy, Macri, and Bhattacharya lined up together.
And you just can tell.
And I have to believe that Macri and Bhattacharya are at least a little smarter than that.
Totally.
But you're right.
At least Bhattacharya, I haven't heard Macri speak as much, but I have seen him apologize a bit.
And if they didn't have that history of ass-kissing, they're definitely catching up quickly.
Yeah.
And so the thing is, it's like they have three options.
They can do what they're doing, which is what we're critiquing, or they could nuance and really talk about the scientific data.
Well, he may not be quite right about it.
And we disagree with him on this, but we're on board with these other things.
Or they could do the really honest thing, which would be to say the Brownstone Institute and the American Enterprise Institute that I'm affiliated with have had this plan for years, and we are now here to put it into motion.
And that's essentially about what you're flagging, all of this libertarian capitalism.
And we have proof, too, with Hyman in that same interview when he said no vaccine has ever been tested against placebo.
It's just wrong.
And what they're doing, Kennedy says that too, when it's called out, what we've pointed out before on the podcast, that vaccines are not tested against placebo if an older version of the vaccine has already been tested against placebo and FDA approved for ethical reasons, they'll do the Bobby Kennedy autism thing.
Oh, that's what I meant.
That's what I meant.
But it's not what you're saying.
So they know they're not going to get caught and then they have an out in case they are caught.
But it doesn't matter because at that point, people just...
That's the biggest problem, is that public opinion is moving more and more in this direction, and it's based on lies.
Yes.
Well, let's turn to two influencers in Maha's orbit, but they do not hold positions in the administration.
Just want to point that out.
First, we have chiropractor Will Cole, who adopted functional medicine a while back, and he was one of the first, I'm going to sell supplements via telehealth grifters.
Then you have Real Foodology creator Courtney Swan, who is one of the invited guests at the Maha congressional panel that we covered back in September.
And just this weekend, she blocked me on social media.
So now I have to use my burner accounts to find you.
They're so slick.
I don't know.
What did I do, Courtney?
What did I do?
She blocked me and Mallory at the same time, so it was probably one of our collabs.
So both of these people have been champions of Kennedy on social media and in the news on outlets like Fox and News Nation, and they often collaborate on posts with each other along with Cali Means.
I should also note the Maha Super PAC, which is a political fundraising organization that Kennedy started.
Actually, I'll just point this out.
Tony Lyons was one of the people who founded their political action committee.
He is the publisher of Skyhorse.
He said, and he's taken it offline, but I saved a copy of it a few years ago, about 2020.
He said, I'm using the funds, the proceeds that we raise from Sky who are selling books.
He published The Truth About Dr. Fauci, all the Kennedy books, to go to anti-vaccine causes.
So he now has an actual political power in this game.
Now here, Will Cole and Courtney Swan are discussing...
I don't agree with everything that the Trump administration does, but we can say because this is our lane and they're progressing our lane, of course we're going to get behind that.
Absolutely.
I think anyone, like if you're in another line of work that you are so incredibly passionate about, and then suddenly you have this on a political stage and you have the opportunity to create policies that could help people, why wouldn't you do that?
That's very, very interesting calculus you're doing there, right?
Like maybe I don't disagree with people being black bagged on the streets and shoved into vans.
Maybe I don't agree with 10 year olds having to deliver their father's babies.
But you know, we have an opportunity to really help people by selling someone's Okay, that's enough of them.
I've covered them on our social media feeds a lot as well, and I'm sure I'll have more to say about it.
But let's turn to two people we haven't covered as much on the podcast, but it seems like we will because their stars are rising as well.
First, you're going to hear naturopath Jolene Brightman asking a reasonable-sounding question.
Brightman also has her own supplements line.
Surprise, Dr. Jen Gunter has fact-checked and just taken her to task in her substack before because Brightman plays quite loose with the evidence with things like her menopause solutions.
And she's also built a pretty credible...
Then we have Alex Clark, who I did mention ago.
She built her name as a, I'm putting this in quotes here, cute-servative wellness girly.
That is her term and she owns it because that's who she's mobilizing.
She found an audience in Maha coming from the right.
So a lot of people, we have a lot of reformed liberals who went right because of COVID radicalization.
She actually was on the right and then met up with this crew.
And I'll just say that she was also at the Maha congressional panel last fall.
Criticisms of Maha.
But the focus has gone towards seed oils and food dyes.
And then what hasn't been addressed are concepts like food deserts, health disparities, access to healthcare.
And so a lot of people are like, y 'all are focusing on the wrong thing.
You're not taking the whole picture.
But you're behind the scenes.
You've got the intel.
So I want to hear it from you first.
You got to start with the basics.
Teaching the American how to read an ingredient, average American, how to read the ingredient label, what to look for, whether that's starting with seed oils or starting with artificial diet.
Okay, now I understand how to recognize this on a food label.
I can avoid it for my kids.
I know the harms.
Now let's move on to the next thing.
Food deserts, subsidizing the wrong food, you know, putting junk food on food stamps and all that.
I mean, that's all being addressed.
States are having hearings on that issue.
I mean, I think last week we just did an Arizona soda on food stamps or whatever.
So we're covering all of these different things.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
We're just going to wave our hands towards all of that.
But the presumptuous condescension about we're going to teach ordinary Americans how to read the labels, the real stuff she's downplaying about socioeconomic determinants of health is not really being addressed.
And it doesn't start with teaching people how to read those labels so that they'll choose whatever affiliate marketing products you and your inner circle are promoting via chemophobia and dishonest claims about health concerns regarding things like food dyes and, you know, So many of these people have this energy of, I just learned a thing and now I'm going to teach you all about it.
I feel that all the time.
We've talked about this.
Before, behind the scenes, when we're picking out what to discuss.
For example, this past Thursday, you and Matthew did an episode on the Pope.
I don't really feel invested in discussing that.
That's why I'm not on that episode.
Because for me to be like, oh yeah, let me look into all of this, what's going on, it doesn't come into my purview, so I just shut the fuck up about it.
But people can't shut the fuck up if something lines up with what they want to spout.
Yeah, and it all feeds.
Which is like, I just learned a thing.
Let's say red dye number three has all of these terrible problems.
Well, that's wild because it's been improved for a really long time.
So the only way to explain that is that the FDA has actually been corrupt and has not been protecting us.
And so now I need to inform everyone about this.
I don't know how much you've actually looked into the science, but it's an angle, right?
To be clear, first off, so many of the doctors that we've talked to on the podcast who I'm in regular contact with, they're like, fine, take it out.
Just realize that natural food dyes are more expensive and they have more allergies that people have to them.
So there's probably going to be actually more problems with the health if you do put them in, but that's not a big deal.
But they have been tested.
Andrea Love pointed out that Many of the food dyes, including Red Dye 3, they say it's banned in Europe.
No, it just has a different name.
It's not banned at all.
The U.S. bans food dyes that other countries allow in.
It's a lot more complicated than the flattening that they put out.
But you flagged it a moment ago.
Nutrition guidelines have existed for generations and they are changed because science evolves and we understand more.
You can't look back at something 40 years ago and say, ha!
They'd allowed this.
It's like, yeah, and then they stopped doing that 20 years ago.
The number of people who say the food pyramid, the food pyramid stopped in 2006 and it was phased out by 2011 for my plate.
But the problem is, and this is something that Maha in general never addresses, some people like Dr. Daniel Offrey, whose book I covered like 10 years ago when she wrote it, talks about patient adoption.
That is a piece of this too.
Doctors often give advice that patients do not follow.
I watched my grandfather almost clinically die once.
His body temperature went down in the 70s, was pronounced dead.
They revived him and brought him back.
When I went to see him the next week, he was in the basement smoking cigarettes and drinking Budweiser because that's what he had done his whole life.
And at that point, he's like, I'm not stopping.
That's not a great situation, but unfortunately, people don't always take medical advice.
It does not mean it's not there and that people aren't actively sharing it with others.
That is something that is completely missed because they would rather make it seem like all of these forces are against you and we're here to save you because that's how they can make their sales pitch.
Last up.
I want to play a clip by MSNBC chief legal correspondent Ari Melber, and he's talking to Dr. Oz.
Melber plays a clip of Bobby Kennedy saying the measles vaccine wanes for many people so that they no longer have lifetime protection.
Oh, so they do have protection.
They do have protection before that.
Maybe.
It depends on how much fetal debris counters the effects of the MMR vaccine.
Bobby then brings up adverse reactions and says there are deaths every year from the MMR vaccine without proof, of course.
Nope.
Melba reminds Oz that he is now in charge of childhood vaccination.
I just want to remind everyone and then get your response.
The American Medical Association says no.
The measles vaccine works and children should get it as soon as possible.
It's the best defense against measles infection.
And what would you say families should do?
Well, Secretary Kennedy is standing up for choice.
He's saying you have the option.
I'm very, very specific on this issue that CMS will pay for the vaccines that you wish to have for your family.
And that's stated.
It's your choice.
You do what you think is best.
Most families do vaccinate their kids.
Do your homework, not just on vaccines, but all the other things having to do with their loving of your family.
Most families do it, and you think that's a good idea.
I think it's a good idea, but it's up to every family, depending on what other issues are happening in their lives.
And this is what Secretary Kennedy has been exceedingly clear on, and he's brought up op-eds on this, he's done multiple media interviews to that same effect.
He has his concerns about vaccines, but he wants you to have your choice.
My job is to make sure that when possible, we pay to make sure you have Somewhere in a basement room close to the White House, there is a media training team, and their star pupil is Caroline Levitt.
And all of the rest of these motherfuckers are employing the exact same strategy.
You just completely have to go with whatever the talking points of the day are, regardless of the fact that you said the opposite yesterday.
This is the reveal to me here.
I wrote an article that was published today on Monday about Cali Means and that Politico about the coding, the code words that he's using.
Oz just did it.
So after Biden.
Brown v.
Board.
The right started using school choice as a way to get white kids out of schools that were being diversified with black students, basically.
It later became the code word for the Christian right.
To shuffle taxpayer money into private religious Christian schooling.
Because when they tried to do it with Muslim or Jewish schooling, it was blocked in regions.
But with Christian schooling, they want to shuffle that taxpayer money.
We covered this like a year ago after Mother Jones did a big article on this.
So the concept of choice is this idea that you're going to have limited choices if, for example, in this case, we had socialized medicine.
Oh, you'd have to go to the doctor that's assigned to you.
That's complete bullshit.
Every other country that has socialized medicine has private insurance options.
They have private healthcare options.
So the idea that you would not have a choice is untrue.
Is people not being medically bankrupted because they can't pay their healthcare bills?
What you would have is you would have one system in which an entity, a government entity, would set the standards and the prices for services across the board.
We've covered this as well.
For a meniscus surgery, you can pay between $3,000 and $17,000, I think, were the figures in Los Angeles.
I remember researching that when I had my meniscus surgery.
Patients have no idea what they're paying when they go in for even routine procedures.
