Sargon of Akkad - Carl Benjamin - The 1 in 5 College Sexual Assault Myth Explained Aired: 2016-02-17 Duration: 02:44 === False Facts Exposed (02:42) === [00:00:01] There's contradictions within Milo's speech in and of itself. [00:00:06] So for example, when Milo is talking about how there is no rape epidemic on campus, that rape essentially doesn't exist on college campuses, and obviously he's using entirely false facts. [00:00:22] Well, obviously his facts are false and your facts are correct. [00:00:26] But the thing is, I am such an asshole that I can't just take your word for it. [00:00:30] I've got to go and check. [00:00:31] I imagine that Milo was using this special report done by the US Department of Justice on rape and sexual assault victimization rates among college-age females between 1995 and 2013. [00:00:43] This study found that young women between 18 and 24 who were students were safer than those who were not students. [00:00:51] The rates of completed rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, or the threat of rape and sexual assault were 7.6 per thousand female students. [00:01:01] And for young women enrolled in college, this went down to 6.1 per thousand students. [00:01:07] This is less than 1%. [00:01:10] These are facts we can be certain of. [00:01:12] The only thing that is left out of these facts are the number of unreported sexual assaults and rapes, because obviously these are the reported ones. [00:01:23] And this is where hard data stops and social science begins. [00:01:27] Our feminist activist will be quoting from sources like this. [00:01:31] A report on the Association of American Universities Campus Climate Survey on sexual assault and sexual misconduct. [00:01:39] Respondents were asked whether one or more of these sexual contacts occurred as a result of four tactics. [00:01:44] One, physical force or threat of physical force. [00:01:47] Two, being incapacitated because of drugs, alcohol or being unconscious, asleep or passed out. [00:01:53] Three, coercive threats of non-physical harm or promised rewards. [00:01:57] And four, failure to obtain affirmative consent. [00:02:01] The first two tactics generally meet legal definitions of rape and sexual battery. [00:02:06] The other two tactics are violation of student codes of conduct. [00:02:09] And it is unsurprisingly this massive inflation of what is and is not sexual assault that accounts for the one in five figure. [00:02:18] Like they said, half of their categories don't even fall under the legal definition of sexual assault or rape. [00:02:24] And failure to obtain affirmative consent doesn't even mean the person wasn't consenting. [00:02:31] Therefore, including that in any results is going to be inherently misleading. [00:02:36] And finally, these surveys are not facts. [00:02:40] We do not know whether the answers given on them are true or false.
