| We seek healthy economic competition that is not winner-take-all, but with a fair set of rules, will benefit both of our countries. | ||
| The meeting is part of a four-day trip to China where she is pushing for market reforms there while criticizing the world's second largest economy for its recent tough actions against U.S. companies. | ||
| Despite talk of U.S.-China economic decoupling, recent data show a trade relationship that is fundamentally solid, with two-way trade hitting a record $690 billion last year. | ||
| And there were optimistic signs despite mounting tensions. | ||
| Li told Yellen a rainbow that appeared as her plane landed from Washington on Thursday offered hope for the future of U.S.-China ties, saying there was more to U.S.-China relations than just wind and rain and that we will surely see more rainbows. | ||
| Yellen said she hoped her visit would spur more regular communication between the two rivals, and said any targeted actions by Washington to protect its national security should not jeopardize the broader relationship. | ||
| The United States, in certain circumstances, will need to pursue targeted actions to protect its national security, and we may disagree in these instances. | ||
| But we should not allow any disagreement to lead to misunderstandings that needlessly worsen our bilateral economic and financial relationships. | ||
| Yellen is the latest member of US President Joe Biden's cabinet to visit China. | ||
| Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing last month. | ||
| The visits are part of an effort to improve relations. | ||
| After the U.S. military shot down a Chinese government balloon over the United States, Biden and Xi could get together later this year at global meetings in India or the U.S. The United States does not seek a wholesale separation of our economies. | ||
| We seek to diversify and not to decouple. | ||
| The decoupling of the world's two largest economies would be destabilizing for the global economy and it would be virtually impossible to undertake. | ||
