| Were you hearing conflicting signals throughout the weekend, or had you heard all along that China was going to be a bit more restrained? | ||

Well, China has said that it was simulating sealing off Taiwan and that they had rehearsed precision strikes on key targets. | |
| This is the first time we've heard that sort of language associated with the drills, but the drills are not We're not as intense or expansive as the ones that we saw last summer after Nancy Pelosi's visit. | ||
| What is curious, Joe, is how some of this language describing the drills is being picked up and amplified to create this impression that there's this ominous drumbeat towards war, which is not the case right now. | ||
| Beijing has been very deliberate in its response to that meeting between House Speaker McCarthy and Tsai Ing-wen. | ||
| Xi Jinping is trying to position himself as a global statesman and China as a diplomatic power player. | ||
| They're also playing the long game here. | ||
| There are presidential elections in Taiwan next January. | ||
| More mainland friendly candidate is going to be returned to power. | ||
| So there was the sense that they weren't out to scare voters with the military drills, but certainly to be able to have this show of power, this show of confidence, and maybe have people think perhaps the US isn't going to come to your rescue. | ||
| What is really interesting for me in this is what has been generating attention here in state media and in social media. | ||
| It's not the drills. | ||
| And it's not the US delegation that's been visiting Taipei. | ||
| It's anything to do with France. | ||
| It's anything French. | ||
| It's Emmanuel Macron who is being absolutely celebrated here after that state visit last week because of some of the comments that he was making about European strategic autonomy and not always falling into line with the US position. | ||
| That's after the comments he made here. | ||
| Then he gave that interview to Politico and a couple of French journalists where he said, quote, the question Europeans need to answer, is it in our interest to accelerate a crisis on Taiwan? | ||
| No. The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the U.S. agenda and a Chinese overreaction. | ||
| He went on to say that Europeans haven't been able to solve the crisis in Ukraine, so it would not be in Europe's best interest to try to make commitments to Taiwan. | ||
| So that has been music to some nationalist ears here, where the Taiwan issue actually gets very broad-based support from people who think that the island should be unified with the mainland. | ||
| It also doesn't strategically help the US here at a time when there is no high-level communication between the US and China. | ||
| There is very little trust between the two sides. | ||
| And there doesn't appear to be any clear momentum to get any of it back on track. | ||
| Breaking news, the Pentagon investigating how top-secret U.S. documents came to be posted on social media. | ||
| Troubling disclosures not only about the war in Ukraine, but also China, Iran, and the Middle East. | ||
| How did this happen, and what does it mean for national security? | ||
| ABC senior White House correspondent Mary Bruce is at the White House tonight. | ||
| Tonight, growing concerns as more and more top secret classified Pentagon documents are being discovered posted on social media. | ||
| Dozens of pages of sensitive material dealing with everything from China to Iran's nuclear program to North Korea. | ||
| It comes as the Pentagon tonight is investigating how classified documents about U.S. and NATO plans to assist Ukraine in the fight against Russia were leaked and posted on the Internet. | ||
| Those documents, most of which we cannot show, paint a detailed snapshot of the Ukrainian battlefield on March 1st, including training schedules and locations for Ukrainian troops, weapons delivery schedules, and casualty updates. | ||
| Pictures of the documents appeared on social media this week, but ABC News has found that some were posted on the Internet in early March, shortly after the documents were drafted. | ||
| The photos include visible creases, as if the pages had been folded to fit in a pocket. | ||
| A U.S. official saying the documents are no longer relevant to the battlefield, adding that they are of limited intelligence value and appear to have been altered from the original documents. | ||
| For instance, the number of Russian fatalities was significantly reduced in the photo posted online. | ||
| But the fact that this top-secret material appeared on the Internet so soon after being issued only deepens the security concern. | ||
| These leaks causing lots of alarm. | ||
| Mary Bruce joins us now from the White House. | ||
| And Mary, the Pentagon tonight racing to uncover just how all this classified information got out and just who posted it online. | ||
| Lindsay, the Pentagon is extremely concerned in looking at everything from who had access to these documents to who may have printed them. | ||
| And right now it is not clear if this was a leak from inside the Pentagon or a hack by a foreign actor. | ||
| Meanwhile, tonight there is already an international blame game going on. | ||
| The Ukrainians blaming the Russians and the Russians pointing a finger at the U.S. We'll be right back. | ||
| Okay, Easter Monday, 10 April, in the year of our Lord, 2023. | ||
| As we hurdle towards, you know, we're in the early years of the Third World War, as we've told you, in the convergence of these crises, the financial and economic crisis now with the geopolitical. | ||

| That we know almost virtually nothing about what's really going on in Ukraine. | ||

| He's totally owned by the CCP. He announced this for the presidency because they want to make sure that they have this fight where half the Chinese people don't want to defend against the CCP. And at the same time, these leaks, what these leaks show, Jack, you're a naval intelligence officer. | ||

| The triumphalist narrative that the Russian army is being defeated and beaten back and he's about to collapse, at least from the documents to the Joint Chiefs, is wrong. | ||
| Okay, so Steve, there's a lot going on here, but let's go back to China for a second, because we have to understand, you got to go back to 101, Chinese military strategy. | ||
| To subdue the enemy without fighting is the pinnacle of skill. | ||

| And those ships, they're not going to be able to get insurance, Steve, if they're being told they're going to run blockades. | ||
| They're not going to be able to get reinsurance from Swiss Re. | ||
| The captains aren't going to want to pull out of port. | ||
| So which do you think that every company is going to choose? | ||
| And this is what China has done vis-a-vis Taiwan since the 1970s. | ||
| First, they got the switchover, the handover of diplomatic recognition from Taiwan, the Republic of China. | ||
| At the United Nations, on that Security Council, that vote was then given to the CCP. That was all the way back in the 1970s, and they got that through Carter. | ||
| Then they kept going forward and getting everyone to recognize Beijing over Taiwan, cut relations with them, isolate them economically, isolate them culturally, isolate them diplomatically, so that they would be left with no other choice than to re-assimilate back into the mainland. | ||
| That has been China's plan for 50 years, and it will continue to be their plan. | ||
| Now, all you're seeing is them speeding it up. | ||
| They're just speeding it up at this point because it's like Hemingway said, gradually, then suddenly. | ||
| So they're trying to put Taiwan now on the same track, the same playbook that we saw in Hong Kong just three years ago, in 2019, end of 2019, give or take, right before COVID kicked off, coincidentally. | ||
| Totally coincidence, right? There are no conspiracies. | ||
| And we know that with Hong Kong, we were told it was going to be one country, two systems for 50 years with no interference from Beijing. | ||
| That was a complete lie, and they locked up every freedom fighter. | ||
| They want to do the exact same thing with Taiwan. | ||
| They want to, as the CCP would say, re-assimilate Taiwan without a shot fired. | ||
| At this point, when you've got people like Macron, when you've got MSNBC out there running cover for it, it looks like They're following exact—they're executing their playbook. | ||
| They're executing it to a T. Let's talk about Macron and the intels coming about Ukraine. | ||
| Remember, all the people out there every day saying, oh, democracies in the line, democracies in the line. | ||
| Well, you don't see them. Where are they in Taiwan? | ||

| Let's look at this, folks. Let's talk a little something called logistics. | ||

| You can go through Hungary. You can resupply weapons in. | ||
| How are you going to resupply weapons to Taiwan in a wartime scenario with the Chinese Navy completely? | ||

| I'm talking about little things like the fact That 85 % of Taiwan's energy supply is imported. | ||
| How are they going to be able to run the hospitals? | ||
| How are they going to be able to run the schools? | ||
| How are people going to live without an energy grid? | ||
| People do not understand because Taiwan is an island as opposed to Ukraine, which has this massive territory, 17 times the size of Taiwan. | ||
| And we walked through the differences. | ||
| There on Saturday that you're not going to be able to resupply. | ||
| They're not going to be able to eat. They're not going to be able to power their homes. | ||
| They're not going to be able to power their hospitals. | ||
| They're not going to be able to power their military installations. | ||
| What good is the intel if you don't have any power for it? | ||
| What good are your surface-to-air missile systems if they don't have any aircraft missiles if they don't have Any power to them. | ||
| People are not actually thinking through how devastating a blockade would be of Taiwan. | ||
| And of course, that's why the CCP is pressing that button and threatening to do this with these development operations. | ||
| And to all the people out there who say, oh, well, you know, China would have problems if they were conducting amphibious assault, the lift, etc. | ||
| Yeah, they could turn Taiwan Into a flaming fireball overnight if they wanted to. | ||
| They don't want to do that because they want to assimilate the island, but that's why they're talking about these missile strikes, which I think people are missing the point. | ||
| It's not about being able to strike down some of them. | ||
| We're not going to get all of them. They also want the chips also. | ||
| By the way, even if you're not into the supporting people for democracy, I got that. | ||
| You can't be the world's policeman. | ||
| Here is just a practical matter. | ||
| The American economy would implode. | ||
| You think you've got a problem with the banking crisis? | ||
| You ain't seen nothing yet. You lose those chip factories, the advanced chip production of these factories, you're a done deal. | ||

| They have some basic ideas of where things are on the battlefield. | ||
