The American offshoot of Canada's so-called Freedom Convoy is getting ready for some kind of action around Washington tomorrow. | |
| The convoy is getting to Maryland today. | ||
| This is what you're looking at from right around Pittsburgh. | ||
| Participants making their way through PA on your screen there. | ||
| But one of the notable departures from the convoy in Canada, the reason for protesting in the first place, since criticism of vaccine and mask mandates are a little bit moot, right, now that those restrictions are being lifted around the country. | ||
| So what's the deal? | ||
| What are these truckers looking for now? | ||
| Quote, accountability. | ||
| Okay. | ||
| Accountability on what? | ||
| A whole range of things. | ||
| Kind of depends who you ask. | ||
| NBC News senior reporter Ben Collins reports that part of the focus of the group that planned the convoy has shifted more recently to a conspiracy theory about the war in Ukraine. | ||
| And this totally made-up story that former President Trump and Vladimir Putin are secretly working together to stop bioweapons from being made by Dr. Anthony Fauci. | ||
| Ben Collins is here with us now. | ||
| So, Ben, like, what? | ||
| Please, please explain this. | ||
| Yeah, look, as they made their way across the country, this has been, you know, about two or three weeks now since they've come from Atlanta, California, all the way to Washington, D.C., picking up people along the way. | ||
| Mass mandates have lifted So they have not really had a specific unifying message. | ||
| They think they had something to do with those mask mandates lifting and not the decline of the Omicron variant. | ||
| So they think that they have personally done something here. | ||
| So now they want to take it a step further. | ||
| Now they want what they say is accountability for what they call crimes against humanity, which are masking children or vaccine mandates. | ||
| Accountability can mean anything to any number of these people, but there is a very heavy cue and unhinged to this sort of thing. | ||
| The idea of military tribunals or things like that. | ||
| And that's where you're getting this anti-Ukraine talking point. | ||
| The idea that Anthony Fauci has biolabs, he's creating another coronavirus in these biolabs, and that this is some sort of secret operation to take out the deep state in Ukraine. | ||
| That is their idea here of sort of squaring this unsquareable circle, where for years they were told maybe Vladimir Putin wasn't the bad guy, but they're seeing all these horrific images in Ukraine, and now they're sort of trying to figure out a way for all this narrative to make sense. | ||
| So what is the plan for tomorrow? | ||
| Where do things stand on that front for what we should expect to see where I am in Washington, Ben? | ||
| It's really unclear. | ||
| They're in Hagerstown, Maryland right now. | ||
| They've been going from small town to small town all throughout the country, refueling, giving stump speeches at these small places. | ||
| But, you know, even until right now, they were in Indianapolis for basically two days, and they're still trying to figure out a plan for what to do in Washington, D.C. | ||
| Sometimes they're saying that they're being mumb about it because they don't want to tip off the police there. | ||
| And some of them say they want to go to the White House, which they're not going to make it to the White House, obviously. | ||
| Some of them say they want to block the Beltway, but that's 64 miles long. | ||
| So it's kind of unclear where exactly they would do that and how they would do that. | ||
| I can tell you right now, Hallie, a lot of people have written this off because there have been these false starts all throughout the country. | ||
| This one has picked up steam. | ||
| There are people waiting on those overpasses just to wave to them as they come by all across the country. | ||
| There are hundreds of cars in this convoy. | ||
| There are dozens of semis in this convoy. | ||
| So, one way or another, there's going to be something in Washtenaw tomorrow. | ||
| We just don't know what it is. | ||
| Okay. | ||
| Anything else about this sort of range of, I don't know, Ben, I hesitate to say demands, right, but like range of requests? | ||
| Yeah, it's kind of unclear. | ||
| They kind of won. | ||
| They think that they won. | ||
| They think they had something to do with these mass mandates being taken out. | ||
| But look, they had nothing to do with that. | ||
| You can't convince them of that. | ||
| They're in their own completely separate media ecosystem. | ||
| The issue is now, because it's so nebulous, they're trying to Sort of wedge in this Ukraine talking point where it doesn't really make sense. | ||
| It doesn't fit with the rest of it. | ||
| But they don't want to come off as like whiny in the midst of a real brutal war and real brutal oppression. | ||
| So they're trying to wedge themselves into here. | ||
| It's just not really working out in the way they want. | ||

| When MSNBC had to report the facts, when Ben Collins had to report actually the facts, it's a pretty accurate news report about what's going on, how big it's gotten, how it's picking up momentum. | ||
| When he had to then get into the speculation, then they get off to the races. | ||
| And, of course, they've got to smear. | ||

| It's about biolabs in Ukraine. | ||
| Although, the accountability project, as we say, is going to start on November 9th. | ||

| We know that Tony Fauci funded a bioweapons lab in Wuhan, China. | ||

| We know for a fact, that is a fact, that Tony Fauci helped to fund research at a bioweapons lab run by the PLA in Wuhan, where the CCP virus came from. | ||

| And second off, the whole entire notion that this convoy is trying to play off the Russia-Ukraine war is also completely ridiculous. | ||
| I mean, we're here fighting for our American freedoms. | ||
| This convoy is here fighting for American freedoms, and nobody has said a single word about this being about Russia and Ukraine. | ||
| And even further, to go off of that, every single speech that the organizers have in every single city, what they're constantly saying is, this is not about a political party, right? | ||
| So MSNBC says they're pro Trump. | ||
| This is not about a political party. | ||
| Everywhere they go, they say, this is not about politics. | ||
| This is not about your race, your gender, your sexual orientation. | ||
| This is about maintaining our constitutional rights and for people to be held accountable for the horrific damages we've seen in our economy, socially, and in the entire sphere of the COVID lockdowns and restrictions. | ||
| So this is about emergency orders, and we had expected that to happen. | ||
| So as soon as we took off, they lifted the mandates. | ||
| And so now the question is, well, what are you fighting for if you're lifting mandates? | ||
| Well, the answer to that is we never want to go back to what we just experienced. | ||
| So the convoy is standing up and saying, if you do this again, the American people will not stand behind you. | ||
| And another thing Brian Braze, the leader of the convoy, is saying is, we need to remind the government that they work for us. | ||
| And right now, they're listening to pharmaceutical companies and big tech. | ||
| They're not listening to us. | ||
| And so this is about reminding the government that they work for us. | ||
| This is a protest. | ||
| And if you think that it's just about masks, and it's just about mandates, and it's just about vaccines, then you're missing the entire point. | ||
| What I'm really proud of is you guys have come across the country and done it so peacefully. | ||
| And this thing has picked up, you know, I don't know, it's 60, 70 miles long. | ||
| It grows and it shrinks at different times. | ||

| They've made a lot of progress in the South, but they're still stalled in the North, so explain this all to me. | ||

| Week one, we were talking essentially about Russian failures, but in the last 72 hours, we're starting to see Russian successes. | ||
| Crimea here, taken in 2014 by the Russians, this force has moved out and created a land bridge that you see connecting them with the breakaway republics that the Russians already control. | ||
| Now they're laying siege right here to this town, Mariupol. | ||
| This is total war. | ||
| This is a cutting off electricity, endless bombardments. | ||
| I think it forecasts what we might see if there was a siege of Kiev. | ||
| Separately, I want to take a step back, though, and focus on the new developments in the last few hours and in the past day. | ||
| One, here in Kiev, you're seeing them advance out. | ||
| And move to here, Kherson. | ||
| Kherson has a critical bridge that the Russians were able to take. | ||
| They were also able to open up a canal that had been shut off after 2014, which was providing, which can now provide fresh water into Crimea. | ||
| That speaks even more to their advance. | ||
| When you look here, they've moved overnight. | ||
| They're advancing on Mykolaiv. | ||
| And what's interesting about Mykolaiv is this. | ||
| When you zoom in here, this is a population center, but it's also a river with a major bridge and a bridge crossing. | ||
| If they can cross this bridge here, if they can move further to the west, they'll essentially be able to move unimpeded all the way to Moldova. | ||
| They also have a force there in Tranistria, which is a breakaway republic. | ||
| That force, should they be able to bring it together, they'll be able to advance from here to Arsene, today to Mykolaiv, and if they can break through here, they would have almost a straight shot. | ||
| to Moldova. | ||
| If they're able to do that, they would essentially cut off the southern coast. | ||
| They could then surround Odessa. | ||
| And if they can take the south, they'd be able to bring in forces by water over time. | ||
| So very significant development in the south. | ||
| And I think that's the real question here is if they seal off all the water accesses, Ukraine's resupply, it's got to come over land, it's got to come from Poland. | ||
| So we're seeing a lot of progress again in the South, but why is that 40 mile long stall or stretch of Russian tanks in the North going toward Kiev still stalled? | ||

So this is that convoy we've been talking about for several days. | |
| Several things about this. | ||
| One, they're just stacking up combat power. | ||
| This isn't even a real military formation. | ||
| It looks like a traffic jam. | ||
| And that's because they're not really afraid of any sort of airstrikes at this point. | ||
| Now, there have been some developments, which is in and around Kiev. | ||
| The defense minister has said that inside Kiev itself, over here you see this airfield. | ||
| I'll try and direct you to it. | ||
| This airfield here, essentially airborne forces had tried to take it in the early days of the war. | ||
| That convoy was literally approaching it. | ||
| The Ukrainian defense minister says that they pushed it back. | ||
| And that's several questions. | ||
| One, there's talks of airstrikes and air power. | ||
| Maybe Ukraine still has some air power. | ||
| But separately, there's talks of insurgents possibly bombing that in the rear lines or special operations forces and maybe a blown bridge, essentially just halting that convoy over and over so it can't get to Kiev. | ||
| Is there a point in which Vladimir Putin or is there a worry that there's a point where Vladimir Putin says you might not be physically fighting me but I feel like you're fighting me and then takes aggressive action? | ||

Well, he certainly already feels that way. | |
| I think there's a big difference. | ||
| In the United States and in NATO, Katie, there's a general perspective that you can't do a no-fly zone because that could lead to World War III. | ||
| You can't send troops on the ground to defend Ukrainians because that could lead to World War III. | ||
| But you can provide incredibly advanced weapons systems to the Ukrainians. | ||
| You can give them real-time intelligence on the disposition of Russian forces. | ||
| And you can destroy the Russian economy. | ||
| And those things are below the bar. | ||
| From Putin's perspective, all of those things are acts of war. | ||
| But at the same time, there are these growing calls, as we're seeing these continuing images harrowing sites out of Ukraine, for NATO and the West to do something more than just economic sanctions, to actually intervene militarily, or at least impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine. | ||
| The Secretary General of NATO, he said that the West has an obligation not to do that. | ||
| With regard to the no-fly zone, I think you heard NATO Secretary Donald Stoltenberg speak to this earlier today. | ||
| One of the responsibilities we have, even as we are Doing everything we can to give the Ukrainian people the means to defend themselves effectively against Russia. | ||
| We also have a responsibility, as the Secretary General said, to ensure that the war doesn't spill over even beyond Ukraine. | ||
| And again, because I think he put it so well, as he noted, the only way to actually implement something like a no-fly zone is to send NATO planes into Ukrainian airspace and to shoot down Russian planes. | ||
| Okay, they're jammed up right now, because they've misled the Ukrainian people about their level of support, and that's why you're seeing this bloodshed, as the Russians continue to pound away. | ||
| The one question I have for the military, particularly look at, it's Clint Watts, I think he's a West Point grad, and I think he does the most succinct analysis of what's happening. | ||
| Talks about the land bridge, talks about the coming siege of Kiev. | ||
| The one thing I've just been wondering from day one, why is the Ukrainian military, if it's that organized, why are they not blowing the bridges? | ||
| Particularly in the south. | ||
| If you want to stop the Russians from getting this land bridge, you've got to blow the bridges over these rivers and creeks. | ||
| A lot of this is like the low country in if you saw Operation Market Garden and Bridge Too Far, you have to blow the bridges. | ||
| You have to blow the bridges. | ||
| And they haven't done that. | ||
| And that's why the Russians and the Russians get that complete land bridge in the south. | ||
| They're going to have all all access by the sea is going to be controlled by them. | ||
| It's this this war. | ||
| So everybody's criticizing. | ||
| I think Clinton wants at the beginning, people criticize Putin, at least their military strategy and tactics. | ||
| But the last couple of days, it looks like it's starting to work. | ||
| Also, that was Ian Bremmer. | ||
| This is very important. | ||
| We talked about hybrid warfare this morning and unrestricted warfare, weapons, advanced weapons systems, real time intelligence on Russian targets and destroy the Russian economy. | ||
| We think that it's below the radar scope. | ||
| Putin thinks those are acts of war. | ||
| And this is what we keep saying. | ||
| Joe Biden has to come forward and we should start seeing some maturity people like Lindsey Graham, we're going to have the guys, Michael Patrick Layheon here. | ||
| Lindsey Graham's got a term in assassinating people, massive escalation. It's time for everybody to take a deep breath and start to act like adults and approach the American people with exactly what's going on, what's at stake. Matthew Tierman joins us from Warsaw. Matthew, get us up to date on what you know there in the Polish capital. Well, actually, I'm here in Krakow, which is the secondary capital of Poland. And, you know, one quick remark, taking the train from Warsaw, the central station, the biggest station in the | ||
| country, down to Krakow, the second biggest station in the country, absolutely packed with refugees and huge amount of aid workers wearing vests for the mothers and the children in Cyrillic, trying to get them into the different cities, place them to where they can be sheltered for the, you know, the interim. | ||
| We don't know how long this is going to last. | ||
| I think that, you know, honestly, sometimes it pains me to say it, but the coverage that you showed from the MSM on the breakdown of where the battle is and how it's now coming from the South is really, really accurate. | ||
| And it's really, really troubling if you're Ukrainian. | ||
| They are about to take control of the entire South. | ||
| They already have Mariupol. | ||
| They have Crimea. | ||
| They have Nikolayev, which they showed where there's a bridge, but more importantly, there's an airfield there. | ||
| That was the airfield that defended Crimea from the Kiev side, from the West side. | ||
| They have that, and now they're making a play for Odessa. | ||
| If they get Odessa, then it is a foregone conclusion with Transnistria that they're going to make a play at Moldova, which is now a second country where they're going to be playing a global geopolitical game. | ||
| And it's not coincidental that it's Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia that are all at the same moment petitioning for EU membership and obviously soon to follow NATO membership. | ||
| And then Moldova's on the border of Romania, which is a large NATO member but a weak NATO member that does not have strong defences, has not upgraded its military to the degree that Poland has. | ||
| None of that's coincidental. | ||
| Let me ask you about this question about the no-fly zone, and particularly the kinetic war. | ||
| We see that the Russians are very slowly trying to strangle the provinces. | ||
| They've got the provinces in the east. | ||
| They're trying to get a land bridge in the south to control that. | ||
| They're looking to siege Kiev. | ||
| But this thing about advanced weapons systems, intel, and particularly destroying their economy, the economic warfare. | ||
| Is Ian Bremmer correct? | ||
| Does Putin see those as acts of war? | ||
| Yes, I really, really, again, it pains me to ever give Ian Bremmer, one of the worst globalist academic elites, credit. | ||
| But on this, the situation is really cut and dry. | ||
| We know Putin's motives. | ||
| We know his mechanisms. | ||
| We see the opportunity. | ||
| Again, as I said last week, power abhors a vacuum. | ||
| Putin is acting rationally, not as a great global citizen, sure. | ||
| You know, that's not, in my view, up for dispute, but he's acting rationally and he's going to be taking a huge swath of control militarily, politically, and economically. | ||
| Ukraine looks like it's going to be very cut off. | ||
| Obviously, they're going to make the battle about Kiev where they're going to have, you know, it's a three million person city. | ||
| The troops are called, the men are there, but it's not looking great. | ||
| Putin's hand gets stronger. | ||
| But OK, in that regard, you're going to see inundated with images of women and children being bombarded, civilians being bombarded. | ||
| They're pleading with the West to say, hey, you promised us, you committed us, particularly Joe Biden. | ||
| You committed us to defend us. | ||
| We've got about a minute. | ||
| How's that going to play out, Chairman? | ||
| You know, my view is that he did not want to go this deep and this far, but You know, means, motives, and opportunities. | ||
| He has them. | ||
| He's got, obviously, the motive. | ||
| He wants to rebuild the USSR. | ||
| He's got the means. | ||
| He's got a much stronger military than anybody else in the region. | ||
| And now he's got the opportunity because power abhors a vacuum. | ||
| And the West is feckless. | ||
| NATO is caught flat-footed. | ||
| I know that they are moving weapons in through Poland into Ukraine by overland route, by truck. | ||
| You know, I'm in Warsaw. | ||
| There's a lot of U.S. | ||
| Army guys hanging around Warsaw the last eight days. | ||
| So they're trying to help in whatever way they can. | ||
| But he is a stronger position. | ||
| So if he comes to the table, it's going to be not just with Kharkiv, not just with Mariupol, not just with the Crimean Lambridge, but also with Odessa probably in hand as well. | ||
| So his position is very, very strong. | ||
| I think he'll get his guarantee. | ||
