| You've attacked black journalists, calling them a loser, saying the questions that they ask are "stupid" and "racist." You've had dinner with a white supremacist at your Mar-a-Lago resort. | ||
| So my question, sir, now that you are asking black supporters to vote for you, why should black voters trust you after you have used language like that? | ||
| Well, first of all, I don't think I've ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner, a first question. | ||
| You don't even say, hello, how are you? | ||

| Because I think they're a fake news network, a terrible network. | ||

| My message is to stop people from invading our country that are taking, frankly, a lot of problems with it. | ||
| But one of the big problems, and a lot of the journalists in this room I know and I have great respect for, a lot of the journalists in this room are black. | ||
| I will tell you that coming from the border are millions and millions of people. | ||
| That happened to be taking black jobs. | ||

| Other countries are setting loose their prisoners, they're opening up their prisons and their mental institutions, and they're taking their bad people. | ||
| Drug dealers, gang members, and they're bringing them into the United States. | ||
| And by the way, their crime rate is going down, and our crime rate is going to be a disaster. | ||
| Mr. President, I want to get into how you address some of the issues with black communities. | ||
| And I say that plural because we live in communities of color that are different. | ||
| We're not all the same. | ||
| We don't vote the same. | ||
| We don't think the same. | ||
| It's not monolithic. | ||
| So as you come here today, I want to talk about something that births. | ||
| And this is the weight. | ||
| of the inflation on this country right now. | ||
| The nonprofit Money Management International recently released data from its mid-year analysis that we have found a 52% rise in people who are seeking counseling for being in credit debt. | ||
| They're paying for food that is sky high on their credit cards, and now they can't pay that off. | ||
| The credit counseling nonprofit, MMI, as I said, is saying now that they've seen surges that they haven't seen since we were in a pandemic of people in financial trouble. | ||
| Much of that falls on the shoulders of single moms, single black moms, when you look statistically. | ||
| How do you turn it around? | ||
| What's your plan for the black community when it comes to money? | ||
| So, first of all, it's very hard to hear you for whatever reason because of the fact that they have bad equipment, because I guess, you know, this woman was unable to get the right equipment. | ||
| But it's very hard for me to hear you, but I can hear every other word. | ||
| It's very difficult, actually. | ||
| So I don't know if they can fix it or do something with it. | ||
| I'll do the best I can with it. | ||
| The inflation is absolutely destroying our middle class, our working class, virtually every class. | ||
| Inflation is a disaster in our country. | ||
| Inflation is a country buster. | ||
| It breaks every country. | ||
| We had, in my opinion, the worst inflation we've had. | ||
| They say it's 58 years, but I think it's much more than that. | ||
| It's been devastating. | ||
| And if you just take a look at a lot of things they don't include, like interest rates. | ||
| Interest rates went from 2.4% to 10% and you can't get the money. | ||
| People can't buy houses. | ||
| They no longer have the American dream. | ||
| Young people, young black people, they don't have the American dream anymore. | ||
| They can't buy a house. | ||
| They can't borrow the money because of the cost of the money. | ||
| They can't buy it because of the cost of housing, because of the cost of building, because of inflation. | ||
| Inflation is a disaster and it's destroying our country. | ||
| And it's destroying the black community probably as much... | ||
| So what do you do? | ||
| What's your plan? | ||
| You know what we have to do? | ||
| We have to bring down the cost of energy, and that's going to bring down the cost of inflation. | ||
| This was all started with a bad energy policy by Joe Biden. | ||
| By the way, just if I might, I was running against a man named Biden. | ||
| You probably saw that. | ||
| And he was losing very badly in the polls, and then he had a rather bad debate. | ||
| I would say it was a bad debate. | ||
| I would say it was one of the worst. | ||
| Worst debates in history. | ||
| And his poll numbers crashed. | ||
| And instead of saying, you know, let's keep going and maybe something happens the other way, they said, oh, we're going to replace him. | ||
| Let's just replace him. | ||
| That's like you're in a fight. | ||
| A prizefighter's in a fight. | ||
| He's not doing what you say. | ||
| Let's bring in another fighter. | ||
| So our whole campaign was steered toward him. | ||
| And now we have to steer it to him. | ||
| But ultimately, it's the same because they have bad policy. | ||
| They have policies of open borders. | ||
| Unbelievable open borders, horrible energy policies. | ||
| They want to get rid of, as you say, gasoline in cars. | ||
| They want to get rid of oil. | ||
| They want to get rid of efficient heating. | ||
| Environmentally, what they're doing is killing our country. | ||
| They're absolutely destroying our country. | ||
| But the inflation is the thing that's hurting the black worker. | ||
| The black population and every other population within our country. | ||
| Inflation is the worst it's been, I think, in over a hundred years. | ||

| They'll say it's only 58. Whatever it may be, they don't add all the numbers. | ||
| They don't add the really bad numbers. | ||

| I don't know the exact case, but I saw something, and it didn't look good to me. | ||

| I just won the big case in Florida. | ||

| That was the most difficult case. | ||

| Now, Biden has a similar case, except much worse. | ||

| He's attacking what he says are the choices people are making to not have children. | ||
| Did you know that he had these views about people who do not have children before you picked him to be your running mate? | ||

| And he thinks family is a great thing. | ||

| He graduated in two years from Ohio State, summa cum laude. | ||
| I mean, you take a look at, you know, his career has been an amazing career. | ||
| He started off at a level with a difficult family situation, very difficult, with the mother and the father and everything else. | ||
| He ends up going to Yale Law School and was one of the top students, became the head of the Law Journal. | ||
| I mean, that's an amazing thing. | ||
| He's a four-year. | ||
| He was in the military with great distinction for four years. | ||
| Got out, went into business, became successful in business. | ||
| Very successful in business, actually. | ||
| Did public offerings and other things. | ||
| And I, you know, I have to believe in that. | ||
| I mean, he's somebody that was born in a rough situation. | ||
| Most of the people know that situation because it was very well documented in his book. | ||
| And I have a lot of respect for somebody that can get into Yale and become one of the best students in Yale, that meets a young woman at Yale who was also outstanding and they get married, they have a beautiful family. | ||
| But he had a, you know, he's made himself. | ||
| An amazing life. | ||
| He then goes to Ohio, lives in Ohio, and he had my endorsement. | ||
| That helped. | ||
| But he wins the Senate. | ||
| He becomes a United States Senator. | ||

| And so, Harris, like I respect you for your success, I respect people for their success. | ||

| And what Donald Trump is saying is that there has been a tone change and a focus change. | ||

| What I would be very, very interested in seeing is Vivek Ranswamy's commentary on this. | ||
| Vivek Ranswamy was on Fox News moments ago and had his own comments about this and called it insulting to Indian Americans in America that Kamala Harris has decided to shrug off that part of her heritage. | ||

| Okay, former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy joins me now, and I want to get his thoughts on this and also some of what we heard at the NABJ in just a moment. | ||
| But, you know, your reaction to this white dudes for Harris and how they're trying to be a counter for what they say was this, you know, sort of masculine approach from the RNC and the way they discuss MAGA dudes. | ||
| Well, the reality is this is a party, Martha, that is with identity politics. | ||
| I think it's disgusting and anti-American. | ||
| But the idea of segregating different groups based on your race or your ethnicity or your gender, I just think is un-American at its core. | ||
| It is consistent with the basis for selecting Kamala Harris. | ||
| Remember, many of the prominent Democrats at the time she was selected as the vice president for Joe Biden specifically referenced her own race and gender, which I think made no sense at the time. | ||
| But I will give them points for consistency. | ||
| Say one thing, this is a party obsessed with identity politics, and they're certainly running their campaign accordingly, even though I think it's going to backfire in the end. | ||
| Yeah, you know what? | ||
| I think you make a great point, because I looked back at articles from 2020, and President Biden said, you know, then candidate, he said that he was looking at like 10 women for vice president, and he said four of those women are black women. | ||
| And that was given, you know, sort of a lot of attention as a good thing. | ||
| And I couldn't help but think, you know, if you're in that subset and you're a woman, you're thinking, OK, so now he's already only considering me because I'm a woman instead of letting me run against everybody in the entire pool. | ||
| And if you're a black woman, he's making that group even smaller that you're competing against. | ||
| And I think that a lot of people agree with you on that, that that diminishes being chosen in that employment contest. | ||
| I think it does, absolutely. | ||
| And I think it's denigrating, frankly, to women and to black Americans across this country to suggest that you need a special type of quota system. | ||
| I remember watching those Democratic primaries. | ||
| These are exact quotes from other prominent Democrats, senators and others, who famously said, it's time for a woman of color on that ticket. | ||
| I don't think the race or gender of a person should matter one way or another. | ||
| And I do think, Marcia, this is also a moment for us to go to actually standing for our own values as a party. | ||
| I do believe that we need a bit of a reset in this campaign. | ||
| If we're being honest and being clear-eyed, I think the reality is Kamala's new de facto nomination, coronation, whatever you want to call it, after the Republican convention was a bit of a shock that caught a lot of Republicans by blindside. | ||
| And the reality is we now have to take a big step back and say, we're going to offer our own vision of what we stand for. | ||
| I think the attacks on Kamala alone are not going to be enough. | ||
| We're already seeing that over the last week. | ||
| I think we have to stand for our own alternative vision that we believe in merit. | ||
| The reason that we're critical of identity politics isn't because we're against the Democrats. | ||
| It's because we stand for meritocracy, and that's part of who we are as Americans. | ||
| And so as much as I'm critical of the Democrats, I also think now is a moment for a wake-up call on our own side. | ||
| We need to use this as a chance to reset and level set and focus on our own vision for the future of this country. | ||
| And the more we do that, the more successful we're going to be. | ||
| Frankly, the less we do it, the more risk I do see heading into November. | ||
| All right, let me ask you a little bit about this rather heated National Association of Black Journalists interview with former President Trump and current GOP candidate, because he's going to get a lot of attention for saying this, and I want to hear what you think about it. | ||
| He basically—and I know you didn't get a chance to watch the whole thing, so I—okay, let's play the sound, and then we'll get your reaction. | ||
| She was always of Indian heritage and she was only promoting Indian heritage. | ||
| I didn't know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black. | ||
| So I don't know. | ||
| Is she Indian or is she black? | ||
| She is always identified as a black. | ||
| I respect either one. | ||
| I respect either one, but she obviously doesn't. | ||
| All right. | ||
| Vivek, I want to give you a chance to react to that. | ||
| No doubt it's going to get. | ||
| Yeah, so look, on a very personal level, my parents were immigrants to this country, legal immigrants from southern India, very same part of India that her mother also immigrated from. | ||
| I think it's a hard fact, Martha, it's just a fact, whether you like it or not, that many Indian Americans in the United States are indeed somewhat offended by the way Kamala has suddenly cast aside the Indian American side of her identity. | ||
| She leaned into it when she ran for office in California, big Asian American and Indian American population. | ||
| So she wore that when it was convenient. | ||
| She's wearing a different identity now when it's politically convenient on a national stage. | ||
| Personally, I don't think we should be relying on these ethnic identities at all. | ||
| We're actually American. | ||
| And the problem is when you're Kamala Harris and you actually do lean into your identity politics, then you open the door to that type of criticism. | ||
| But if you ask me, that shouldn't be how this election is decided one way or another. | ||
| It should be decided on our own identity as Americans and what our vision is for the future of the country. | ||
| And the number one thing missing in Kamala Harris' candidacy is that she lacks that vision for the country. | ||
| That's what we've got to focus on. | ||

| She was co-moderating that Q&A in Chicago. | ||
| She, of course, is the anchor of the Faulkner Focus and the co-anchor of Outnumbered. | ||
| Harris, welcome. | ||
| It was a heated environment from the get-go up there. | ||
| Give us your take on what happened from the very beginning and what we couldn't see behind the scenes. | ||
| Well, let me start there, because I think that's really important. | ||
| What the nation has seen is this incredible buildup with journalists here reportedly upset because Donald Trump was coming. | ||
| Some of them. | ||
| And some of them we really hadn't heard from. | ||
| So what I loved about what you couldn't see today was how much of that audience was enjoying the moment of hearing from a candidate that they might not always agree with. | ||
| And that is the whole point. | ||
| That is the growth of journalism, to be able to listen and question those things that you may not know about because you don't often talk to that person or those people. | ||
| That was the goal here. | ||
| So for all of that pushback, young journalists that I'm talking to after the event are saying, We're glad he's here. | ||
| And look, you're always going to have a situation like we had today. | ||
| It was very hard to hear on that dais because of the way the microphones were. | ||
| They had a lot of technical issues going into this to make this happen. | ||
| So the delay that there was out to the public that the former president was talking about had a lot to do with that. | ||
| Now, it did get a little chippy because when a politician is interviewed, sometimes, Martha, they don't always answer the question that you ask. | ||
| So the re-asks in this environment were very... | ||
| And so we got into some good topics, you know, that are important, not just to black communities. | ||
| And I say that plural because we're not all the same. | ||
| We don't think the same. | ||
| We vote different, that whole thing. | ||
| And I love that representation in the room, too. | ||
| Had a lot of young people in the audience today who want to be in the position that we three journalists were in, and that is interviewing the newsmakers. | ||
| And we got that. | ||
| Now, from Donald Trump, we got a lot of talk about the border. | ||
| And look. | ||
| If she becomes the Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, that is an issue that they will continue to hit her heart on, Republicans in general, and particularly this former president. | ||
| I know she's trying to turn the tables and make it about the legislation that has not passed. | ||
| Blaming Republicans for that. | ||
| But what about the porous border? | ||
| And that's where he went. | ||
| What's interesting is we now know she's going to do this particular venue, the National Association of Black Journalists. | ||
| Going into today, that was not the case. | ||
| It'll be remote. | ||
| The president has said he will debate her if she becomes the nominee. | ||
| So you have these two people now, center stage. | ||
| It's interesting to get one of them on that dais. | ||
| Indeed, it is. | ||
| I want to play a little bit, Harris, a little montage of some of what happened up there and get your reaction and what the reaction of the crowd was, because it's a great point. | ||
| At times it sounded like they were kind of cheering him on, and then at other times it sounded like they were surprised by what he was saying. | ||
| So let's play this and get your thoughts on it. | ||
| I want people to come into our company, but they have to be vetted, they have to be checked. | ||
| So when you say, what do I do? | ||
| That, and I drill, baby, drill. | ||
| I bring energy way down. | ||
| I bring interest rates down. | ||
| I bring inflation way down. | ||
| So people can buy bacon again. | ||
| So people can buy a ham sandwich again. | ||
| So that people can go to a restaurant and afford it. | ||

| I have too much respect for you to be late. | ||

| You know, just in terms of the former president answering questions, Martha, you and I have both interviewed him. | ||
| It's an interesting journey that you go on, but you've got to keep pressing. | ||
| And there was a little bit of contention on the dais about whether or not he could hear, and when he could hear, would he answer the question. | ||
| I do feel like when it comes to... | ||
| The issues that he was talking about, what the question was that I had asked him was, with black communities feeling the pressure of high pricing now, what policy do you have that's going to go toward them particularly? | ||
| You're here. | ||
| You've come here. | ||
| What's your message for black people who are young and in the audience and feeling this economy? | ||
| So you heard a little bit of that in his first answer in that. | ||
| And then with regard to what you were saying before, in terms of the audience shouting back and having some reaction to him, it was chippy at times, but for the most part they were laughing and they were getting kind of what they didn't have before this. | ||
| And that was a conduit to a man that they see a lot on TV but don't know a lot about his policies. | ||
| Kamala Harris? | ||
| And President Trump, we're going to be an interesting debate if and when that should happen. | ||
| So, you know, talk to me a little bit about his responses on J.D. Vance, because he was defending his vice presidential pick out there today. | ||
| And one of the questioners talked about, she said, I'm a single mom. | ||
| I don't have children, I think she said. | ||
| And he was pushing back. | ||
| She was pushing back on the question of J.D. Vance and whether or not the president is happy with that pick. | ||
| Your thoughts on how that played out, Harris? | ||
| Yeah, and I also followed up with that with we're hearing it. | ||
| No doubt you are, Mr. President. | ||
| There's a lot of chatter around the early struggles and stumbles of J.D. Vance right out the gate. | ||
| Why did you pick him? | ||
| And to answer you on both those counts, whether it be, you know, about the women's statements, some of them that J.D. Vance has had, or just some of the other stumbles that he's got out, you know, had out of the gate. | ||

| I know it was a joke. | ||
| People are still kind of like, well, what was the joke? | ||
| So he said he chose him because he thinks that, you know, where he is as a young man who had come from basically... | ||
| Tough times and made his way through Ivy League school, the U.S. Marines, so on and so forth. | ||
| He defended him, but we each hit him in different ways on why J.D. Vance. | ||
| And finally, I hit him, Martha, with asking him, well, look, two weeks ago, right before the assassination attempt on his life, a few hours before that, we were sitting down at Mar-a-Lago, and I said, why would you choose him when the last thing you said to me before that event, quite prophetically, I might add, Is that something bad could happen, so it matters who you choose. | ||
| I said, "Is J.D. Vance ready on day one?" He did not answer that question. | ||
| He answered it around it, but he did not answer my question. | ||
| Well, I know he was having a little bit of trouble hearing you at some points up there, and that was a bit of a challenge as well. | ||
