| Well, Dana, the Chinese foreign ministry just released a statement in which it claimed responsibility for the balloon, claiming it is, quote, a civilian airship used for civilian research, mainly meteorological purposes. | ||

| This is not the first time Beijing has sent this kind of spy balloon over U.S. territory. | ||

| I'm told that the president has not ruled out shooting down the balloon, but simply wants to avoid the possibility of American civilian casualties. | ||

| A senior defense official told reporters the Chinese surveillance balloon appears to have been sent by Beijing to spy on sensitive sites in Montana. | ||

| And lastly, they said, well, it's nothing to worry about. | ||
| Because they can't collect any intelligence they can't collect through other means, either satellites or human and those sources. | ||
| And that's not correct either, because what they observed is what was our response? | ||
| You know, again, when did we pick up the balloon? | ||
| Was a combatant commander informed as it went to the U.S.? | ||
| What's the chain of command? | ||
| When did it go to the National Command Authority? | ||
| And did we act? | ||
| And the bottom line, Benny, is we did nothing. | ||
| And that's the same scenario as Afghanistan. | ||
| We showed weakness in Afghanistan, and that debacle, I think, led to a green light for Putin. | ||
