Thank you.
Welcome.

What is a woman?
The question of a generation.
The question was asked of Ketanji Brown Jackson at the Supreme Court.
You may remember this moment when Marsha Blackburn asked poignantly, what is a woman to presumably one of the smartest women in the country, we were told by Joe Biden, and she answered like this.
unidentified
Can you provide a definition for the word woman?
benny johnson
Can I provide a definition?
unidentified
No.
Yeah.
I can't.
You can't?
Not in this context.
I'm not a biologist.
benny johnson
Her jaw was left on the floor.
She said she's not a biologist.
And she looked pissed off.
Why is this question so difficult for the hardened Marxists trying to hide?
Who is it that they're not trying to offend?
You could also ask, can men get pregnant?
You could also ask, can women have beards?
You might get the same answer.
Somebody who is not a woman, but who definitely has a glorious beard is Matt Walsh, the author and star of the new hit movie on the Daily Wire, What is a Woman?
Matt Walsh joins us now.
Matt, congratulations on the success.
I mean, the greatest trailer for this movie, and the trailer is awesome, the greatest trailer for this movie was that question during the Supreme Court briefing.
You've got to tell us up front, did you call Marsha Blackburn and say, ask this?
matt walsh
I didn't.
It just really, I mean, it worked out.
That question was asked, and then we put out our first trailer a couple days after that.
It just kind of...
It worked out.
unidentified
I don't know.
matt walsh
Things just aligned perfectly.
But it's also not the last sort of year.
Of course, I've been on this journey that we documented in the documentary.
But I think the question also has kind of sort of working its way into the public consciousness a little bit along the way as people started to realize that the whole gender ideology house of cards.
Can come crashing down just under the weight of very simple questions, including the most simple one of all, at least what we thought was so simple, like, you know, what is a woman?
benny johnson
I've got to ask your personal reaction when you saw Ketanji Brown Jackson, apparently the smartest woman that Joe Biden knows, say she's not a biologist.
matt walsh
The thing is, if I had not been filming this documentary for the year prior to that, I probably would have been as shocked and appalled as a lot of people were.
I wasn't, because that's exactly the kind of answer that I have, and you'll see in the documentary, it's like, that's exactly the kind of thing I've encountered so many times from people who, you know, including people who are supposed to be in the field of medicine, biology, and science.
At least Kataja Brown-Jackson could fall back on the fact that, hey, I'm just a judge, I'm not a biologist.
Not that that's any excuse, but I talk to people who are actually supposed to be experts in this specific area, and even they couldn't answer it, so.
To hear that non-answer from her was just right in line.
Because they cannot answer it.
It's not that they don't know the answer.
It's just that they can't answer it.
And they realize that they can't answer it.
Because if they do, they're going to back themselves into a corner that they won't be able to get out of.
And that's really what comes down to it.
benny johnson
The full title of the movie is What is a Woman?
One Man's Journey to Answer the Question of a Generation?
Book of the same title.
You can find this documentary, by the way.
Absolutely suggest you go to whatisawoman.com.
Matt, what inspired you to go on this personal journey?
You put a ton of work into this.
You were at like 20 different locations, a ton of interviews, pissed off all the right people.
matt walsh
Yeah, we went, I don't even know the full number of places.
We went all around the country.
We went to different countries as well, including all the way.
Into the, you know, wilderness of deep into Africa as well, in pursuit of an answer to this question.
For me, it really started with, honestly, it started with a tweet.
I mean, back in, I think, like 2018, probably four or five years ago, it occurred to me that the left is going around making this claim that men can be women, and you hear statements from men where they'll say, oh, I identify as a woman, and it just occurred to me that I'm not sure they really know what they're saying.
And so when they say, I identify as a woman, it's just a real simple follow-up is, well, what is that?
What are you trying to say exactly?
And that's really what the question is getting to.
It's like, what are you trying to say when you make that claim?
And so I posed it on Twitter, you know, four or five years ago.
I said, can anyone from the left tell me what a woman is?
And for years, I kind of kept it on Twitter and I was waiting.
I started giving speeches about it.
You know, I talked about it on my podcast.
And I got to a point where it's like, either I could just let this go, but that's not an option because I can't let anything go, or I need to actually go out there and pursue people and get this question in front of them in a more active sort of way.
And that's the option that we chose.
And this film arises from that.
benny johnson
People got angry.
Can you describe some of these interactions?
matt walsh
Yeah, the two things that we encountered, I think, are a lot of anger and a lot of fear, too.
We talked to the so-called experts, and we also talked to just normal people on the street.
And then we talked to people at the Women's March, too, who were not so normal, but they were on the street.
And from the normal people, I think many of them, sadly and depressingly, also could not or would not answer the question.
They very rarely on the show, it's more that they were afraid.
They'd start glancing at the camera and they would, sometimes they would tell us that, oh, I just, I don't want to talk about this on camera.
I can't, I'm afraid.
So there's a lot of fear.
It's the so-called experts are the ones who got angry because number one, they're angry that I'm talking to them and asking them any questions at all because what the relationship that they think that's supposed to happen here is they just make a statement and then I sit there and accept it, right?
I nod my head and say, okay, Mr. Expert.
If you ask any kind of skeptical question at all, that makes them angry.
It injures their pride.
And then when they realize that they're getting backed into a corner and they're losing, that's when they get very angry in a defensive way.
So there's certainly a lot of that in the film.
benny johnson
There was a lot of that in the film.
Also on Dr. Phil, we saw this, when you were sort of outnumbered 100 to 1, and this question brought multiple guests to tears?
matt walsh
I was in the middle of, and we're still kind of filming the documentary, and I got the call to, you know, appear on Dr. Phil and talk about this, and it was, the interaction during the filming was, it got pretty tense, and I, you know, we went back and forth, and they had some, you know, they had some, they were trans and non-binary diversity consultants, I believe, if I remember correctly.
That was their title.
And then they brought in a college professor.
And then later in the show, they had this, quote, non-binary parent who's raising a, quote, genderless child.
And so that's kind of what I was on the stage with.
And it was the same thing.
They couldn't answer basic questions, not just what is a woman, but really they couldn't answer any question at all about any of these things that they're saying.
And then after the fact, a couple of the people on stage.
Complained publicly that they had been traumatized and were having nightmares because of little old me.
And I think I'm a lovable, nice guy.
So I don't understand what the big deal is.
benny johnson
They might have a lumberjack phobia.
matt walsh
That could be it.
benny johnson
You never know.
matt walsh
Anti-flannel thing.
I don't know.
benny johnson
We get it.
Hey, listen.
Speaking of lumberjacks, chopping wood here.
What is the core?
Of the message here.
What is the goal?
Because it seems so pernicious.
It's something that, of course, no other parent, you're a parent, I'm a parent, no one's had to deal with this en masse in America.
There have been bad stuff pushed on our kids all the time.
But this is very different, this moment.
Can you sort of unpack that for us?
matt walsh
Yeah, I think what you just said is a big part of the message in the film that I want people to take away.
I mean, it's...
There are plenty of moments in the film that are quite funny.
It's funny, but it's also not.
It's kind of hilarious, but then it also gets quite disturbing.
Because you can't help but laugh.
When you see an adult flummoxed by a question like this, it's hard not to laugh.
It's about women with penises and all kinds of things.
It is funny because it's absurd.
But then the laughter kind of dies away when you realize that this is pervasive.
It is utterly this way, this ideology, this cult mentality is ubiquitous across the entire country.
It's infected every generation.
I mean, I talked about the people, the kind of man on the street interviews that we did.
And it didn't matter if we were talking to somebody who was young or old.
It was like everybody was confused or at least pretending to be because they were so afraid.
And that's when it becomes a lot, you know, it's not quite as funny when you realize.
How pervasive this is, and especially the fact that millions of children are being helplessly indoctrinated into this.
It's a conspiracy among the school system, you know, academia, the media, Hollywood, government, corporations, institutions in the country are conspiring together to foist this onto...
Kids.
And it is having the effect that they desire.
You can look at the survey data.
I mean, according to the latest Gallup poll, I think it was trans identification in the youngest generation is like 10 times higher than it was, or maybe 20 times higher.
It's just exponential growth in this demographic.
And that is all entirely by design.
And that's the other thing we want to bring out of this.
We want people to take away from this film.
benny johnson
Yeah, James Lindsay would say that this is by design to destroy the nucleus of the family, to separate children from parents because they come home saying that they're a tree sexual, and the parents say that it's not a real thing, and a young, impressionable, fragile child goes on a terror and then separates from their moms and dads, right?
And so what you're doing is you're breaking up the country.
To fight the powers that be that would try to control our kids, the family, and that this is sort of the axe at the root of that tree.
Did you see any of this in the documentary?
matt walsh
Absolutely.
And what you bring up about the parents is really important because we talk about the indoctrination of kids, which is going on, but there's also what is not discussed quite as much, and we try to bring out in the films, that there's also the indoctrination of the parents.
And many of that happens through emotional blackmail, where the parents are told that, okay, your daughter, who's 14 years old, came home and said that she wants to get a double mastectomy and wants to be a boy.
And if the parents go to, you know, a counselor or a therapist or talk to anybody these days, what they're very often going to be told is, well, you have to go along with it or your daughter's going to kill herself.
Do you want to have a dead daughter or a living son?
That's the way that this is presented.
Especially as a parent, if you're not prepared for this, if this kind of blindsides you, and now you feel like you're backed into a corner and you're being told by these authority figures that you trust that if you don't go along with it, your child's going to kill themselves.
It's the worst form of emotional blackmail.
And that is another thing that's having exactly the effect that is intended.
benny johnson
Lightning round here.
Matt, if Joe Biden was asked, what is a woman?
What do you think his answer would be?
matt walsh
Well, his answer to every question you ask him is incoherent.
So for that reason alone, it's easy to say that it's incoherent.
But look, Joe Biden is 9,000 years old.
And only recently did he decide that women can have penises and men can become women and all this kind of stuff.
The question I would love...
These Democrats who are that old and have been around for so long, never for almost their entire public career, never said anything about trans flag.
I wish that somebody in the media would actually ask them, yeah, what is a woman's good question?
But also, hey, when did you decide that gender was fluid?
And how did you arrive at that conclusion?
Because there's no evidence you believe that for the first 70 years of your life.
Now you do.
What happened to change your mind?
Questions never asked because there's no good answer.
Of course, the answer is that they're going along with the political trends.
benny johnson
And yeah, Joe Biden, not concerned too much about trans lives as he's plagiarizing and doing impressions of Indian people at gas stations and talking about corn pop.
Final question, what is a woman?
matt walsh
Feels like a spoiler for the film, but I don't want to...
Okay, fine.
I'll do this for you.
I'll give away the spoiler.
And it turns out that a woman is an adult human.
That's it.
benny johnson
You've done a service for our entire nation.
matt walsh
A woman is exactly what we always thought she was, as it turns out.
So this whole journey to bring us back to what we always knew.
benny johnson
Our journey here is, and thank you, Matt.
You've done a service to the entire country.
I can't believe your timing on this.
I mean, I'm sitting watching here going like, these guys, they must have known something's in the water because they must have known.
It couldn't be more perfect, the timing.
And so thank you.
Please, ladies and gentlemen, go and watch What is a Woman?
Whatisawoman.com.
Also a book by the same title, Matt Walsh, American Treasure, Lumberjack.
Thank you.
matt walsh
Thanks, buddy.
unidentified
Appreciate it.
matt walsh
What is a woman?
Can you tell me that?
Well, you're at the Women's March.
You must have some idea.
Please, if one person could tell me what a woman is.
unidentified
You are not here for women!
We ask you to leave!
matt walsh
What is that?
I'm a husband.
I'm a father for...
I host a talk show.
I give speeches.
I write books.
I like to make sense of things.
A woman is not anything in particular.
unidentified
There is not one particular thing.
It could be many things to many people.
Some women have penises, right?
Some men have vaginas.
matt walsh
I like scented candles.
I've watched Sex and the City.
unidentified
Yeah.
matt walsh
How do I know if I'm a woman?
unidentified
That's a great question.
matt walsh
You're not a scientist.
You're not a gender studies major.
unidentified
No.
matt walsh
How do you know that you're a man?
unidentified
I guess because I got a dick.
Can a man become a woman?
I'm not a woman, so I can't really answer that.
Women only know what women are.
matt walsh
Are you a cat?
unidentified
No.
matt walsh
Can you tell me what a cat is?
Do you want to tell us what a woman is?
unidentified
I'm a biological woman that medically transitioned to appear like a male.
I will never.
Be a man.
And so they go on the internet and they're told out if they become a man.
matt walsh
So you worry that there could be a sort of social contagion element of this?
unidentified
A teeny tiny bit, maybe.
It got me at 42. Your child doesn't have a chance.
You're affirming it with hormones that have never been used in this way.
Puberty blockers, which are completely reversible.
Completely reversible.
matt walsh
One of the drugs used is Lupron, right?
unidentified
Which has actually been used to chemically castrate sex offenders.
You know what?
I'm not sure that we should continue with this interview.
You don't want to talk about the drugs that you give to kids?
How can they be removing the healthy breasts of 15-year-old girls?
There are masculine girls.
There are feminine boys.
What are we going to do about that?
benny johnson
Carve them up?
unidentified
How can this whole thing be happening, Matt?
dr phil mcgraw
I wanted us to have a safe place to be able to talk about this.
matt walsh
I care about the truth.
I care about children.
I care about the women who are stolen from them.
unidentified
Is it...
Transphobic to tell the truth?
The interview's over.
Let's turn off the cameras.
Excuse me.
matt walsh
I just wanted to know, what is a woman?
unidentified
And you're not going to find out.
matt walsh
Based on what I'm saying, would you ever want to move to America?
unidentified
They say no.
Never.
I hope you enjoyed it a little bit.
