TruthRadioShow.com And welcome to the Dan Bedani Show and a special edition of the Bible.
And welcome to the book of Acts chapter 23. And if you missed chapters 1 through 22, especially the last two chapters, I would encourage you to go watch them before you proceed any further.
So we'll do an in-depth comprehensive study of the book of Acts.
So also check out Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as well.
We did the chapters of the entire books, I'm sorry.
So we do a specific Bible study approach like always.
It's very important to do every time.
Pray for wisdom and understanding, so let's do that right now.
So bow your heads, guys, and Yeshua Messiah Jesus, we come before you and once again ask you to forgive us of our trespasses and sins individually.
And we love you so much.
Thank you for everything you've done.
And purify our hearts, Lord.
Purify our souls.
And Heavenly Father, we come before you.
And thank you as well.
Thank you for everything you've done.
And just creating us and being our Heavenly Loving Father.
Heavenly Loving Mighty Father.
And we ask you to comfort everybody that needs comfort in the name which way and protect us all from the forces of evil.
And today we ask you to give us divine wisdom and understanding of your mighty word, your holy word, which is the book of Acts, chapter 23. And let the Holy Spirit write your word today upon our hearts.
And we ask you in your mighty name.
We love you so much.
Amen.
So, that being done, guys, what we do is we pray for wisdom and understand what you just did, and we read the scripture in context.
Very important to understand.
Context is key.
That's why we have to emphasize this at every video.
And let the scripture interpret scripture.
The not on your own understanding, let the Holy Spirit work through you, let the Bible speak to you, and gain full understanding.
So, let's turn to chapter 23, and thank you ShakeItWakeRadio.com for the audio edition.
But if you've got a Bible, guys, open it up regardless if it's on screen or not.
If you're watching on YouTube or the audio edition, open your own Bible.
So, Acts chapter 23. Now, before we begin with that, I want to leave off where we are.
Now, Paul, once again, Paul is in captivity.
He was taken into custody by the chief captain and everything else because the Jews were ready to kill him.
Right?
So we leave off to the point that Paul ends up telling the chief captain, the guard, the centurion, right, that you guys just broke the law.
And the chief centurion's like, what do you mean?
You guys, number one, I'm a Roman by blood, right?
Born a Roman.
And on top of it, I'm not even condemned to So the centurion ran over to the chief captain and said, hey, listen, we messed up.
That guy Paul there, he's a Roman and he's not even condemned.
And we beat him because they scourged him.
And according to that law, they can't scourge a man who's a Roman and it's uncondemned.
So, the centurion's like, oh man, we messed up.
We went to the chief captain, and the chief captain's like, uh-oh, we kind of goofed up.
So what happened was, right, the chief captain freed Paul from his bonds.
So, on the morrow, which is the next day, Because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accusing the Jews, right?
So he loosed him from his bands, freed Paul from the chains and everything, and commanded the chief priests and all the consuls to appear, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
So, yeah, the chief captain went to the head Jews, And all the consuls say, listen, we need to call a meeting because we messed up.
And we need clarification.
What is going on?
Why is he being condemned?
Which he hasn't been condemned yet officially.
And this guy's a Roman.
We just scourged a Roman.
There's a problem here.
We just broke the law.
And the chief captain there knew, yeah, they messed up.
So now onto chapter 23. And Paul, earnestly beholding the consul, said...
You know, behold the consul, which is...
I like to learn these words here.
Beholding means...
It's to see, observe.
Right?
So Paul, earnestly observing the consul, and he said...
Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.
Right?
Saying, yeah, I've done nothing wrong.
At this point, you know what I mean?
Like, yeah, when he was killing people, yeah, he's done something wrong.
But we got converted.
Yeah, he has done nothing wrong.
And high priest, Aeneas, commanded them that stood by to smite him out of the mouth.
So, to smite him or punch him in the face, basically.
Right?
And then Paul said unto him, God shall smite thee, the witted wall.
Witted wall.
The witted wall, right?
Man, what's a witted wall mean?
Let me get that.
Witted wall.
A dirty wall which has been made clean.
To look clean.
People appear to look good, but it isn't.
Alright, so yeah.
Alright, so Paul's like literally saying that, yeah, you present yourself to be good, but you're not.
So it's a lot, when you actually learn the meanings of this stuff, you understand what's going on.
And you get a clear understanding of what's going on.
And put yourself in this place right now.
And when you read the scripture, put yourself in that place.
And take time, again, like I said in the prior chapters, don't rush to this.
Take your time.
That's why some of these videos go on 20 minutes, well, maybe an hour.
It's not a race.
You need to really understand the scriptures.
So Paul said unto him, God shall smite you.
So this guy just had a commander that then stood by, so the people guarded Paul, standing by him, right, to punch Paul in the mouth.
And that's exactly what they did, right?
Then Paul said to him, alright, God's going to smite you.
You want to smite me?
You want to punch me?
God's going to cut you down.
Throw a white wall.
He called them exactly a white wall.
Meaning, yeah, you people appear to look clean, right, and all that, but you're actually filthy.
You appear to be good, but you're evil.
For those sinners to judge me after the law and commanded me to smite and to contrary to the law?
So he's saying, you guys, you hypocrites!
You are sitting here to judge me on the law, right?
But you people are the ones violating the law!
You scourge me, you smit me, contrary to the law, because number one, I'm a Roman, and number two, I'm not condemned yet.
And yet you guys scourge me, yet you just smite me, which is a violation of the law, the very law you're trying to use to condemn me.
Paul just handed it to them.
And they stood by and said, Revelest though God's high priest.
So, let me see what this is.
And this is what a Bible study is.
You understand what these things mean, right?
Did I spell that right?
A person who is celebrating with other people in usually a wild, noisy way.
A person who is celebrating with other people in usually a wild, noisy way.
So, you know, people celebrating in a lot of ways, whatever the case is.
So a bunch of people together, you know, they're like celebrating that, you know, they're hitting Paul, I guess, as it's going on, yeah.
But anyway, they stood by the revelers, so God's high praise.
I asked them, are you God's high praise?
Then Paul said, I was not, brethren, that he was the high priest, for it is written, that I shall not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.
But when Paul perceived that one part was seducing, and the other part Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am the Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee.
Of the hope and resurrection of the dead, I am called in question.
So now Paul, like I said, Paul's in his council now before the high priest, you know, the Jews, right?
And when he had said so, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided.
So once he said this, right, the Sadducees and the Pharisees, right, they, yeah, they started conversing with each other.
It's like, all right, yeah, blah, blah, blah, and caused a little division.
So there's a little commotion going on now, right?
This is how smart Paul is.
He handed them that butt.
Literally.
It's like, yeah, you're using the law, right, to try to condemn me.
However, you guys broke the law and still are breaking the law.
The very law that you used to try to use to condemn me, which I have done nothing wrong.
And when he points this out, you know, the Sadducees and the Pharisees, right?
And hope of a resurrection of the dead, I am called in question.
Because I'm preaching of Jesus, you know, the resurrection.
And when he said this, so, arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided.
So, for the Sadducees said, there is no resurrection.
Neither angel nor spirit, but the Pharisees confessed both.
So the Sadducees, yeah.
And again, I'm sorry if I butcher the names and cities and people or whatever the case is.
Yeah.
So the Sadducees, right, they don't believe in the resurrection.
Nor either angel, right, I guess.
Nor spirit.
So it sounds like the general people today.
The Sadducees, right?
Just general people today who don't believe in any of that stuff.
Because they're stuck in man's limitation, they believe science and all that stuff, and oh, it's impossible to have supernatural stuff, right?
And it's like that today, right?
But the Pharisees, right, they believed it.
They believed the resurrection, they believed the angels and all that stuff in the spirit, right?
So now there's a division.
Now, both of these groups wanted Paul condemned.
Now, Paul just threw this back at him about the hope of the resurrection of the dead.
And I called in question, like, you're questioning me.
And Paul's smart because he knew the Pharisees believed in this stuff, but the Sadducees didn't.
So in that council, right, caused a major divide.
So, and there arose a great scrythe.
Great cry means a bunch of people started yelling, right?
And the scribes that were with the Pharisees arose and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man.
But if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
So yeah, alright, so here we go.
The Pharisees had some sense there.
It's common sense, alright guys, listen, alright, we're about to kill this guy, but you know what?
This guy Paul here, right, he's saying we believe in the resurrection, we believe in the angels and God and everything else in spirit, right?
And if he is saying, okay, if he really uses up the spirit, and speaking of this, right, this guy, we find no fault in him.
Let us not fight against God, because if God is speaking to this man, God is speaking to this man, we're fighting against him.
So let us not do that.
Right?
And when there arose a great dissension, you know, big conflict now between the Sadducees and Pharisees, right?
The chief captain, sharing less Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the castle.
So now, yeah, so as the chief captain, Kind of see what's going on, right?
So he's before the council of the Pharisees and Sadducees, right?
Now, Paul speaking, right, the truth, caused a great division between the Pharisees and Sadducees, right?
And they're ready to tear Paul apart, right?
And basically, you know, rip him apart, whatever the case.
And so the chief captain, I guess, just pulled Paul out of there.
Because there's a big ruckus going on now, right?
So, and at the night following the Lord stood by him and said, so, and at the night, so now they brought him back to the castle.
Now Paul's in the castle, right?
And the following night, following the Lord stood by him, right?
And said, right, this is the Lord Jesus told in the spirit, came to Paul and said, be of good share, Paul.
For as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou be a witness also at Rome.
So this is Jesus appearing to Paul in the spirit, right?
In the castle.
He's like, hey, thank you.
Good job done in Jerusalem here.
Now you must do the same at Rome.
And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
So, yeah, that's so explanatory right there.
A bunch of Jews that were stubborn, that they wanted Paul dead, so we're not going to eat or drink.
We're going to buy ourselves some of this curse.
In other words, we're going to swear an oath, whatever the case, right?
No matter what, we're not going to eat a drink until you give Paul.
So basically, it's like a curse that they would let themselves die.
Kind of like indirectly threatening the chief captain, I'm sorry.
And there were among more than 40 which had made this conspiracy.
Which they conspired to do this, right?
So about a little over 40 people that said, you know what?
We're going to bound themselves on the cross.
We're going to swear this oath that we're...
If you don't kill Paul, we're not going to eat a drink.
So our debts are going to be on you.
That's what they're pushing the pressure on, right?
To the chief captain and all that.
So they came to the chief priests and elders and said, we have bound ourselves on the great crest that we will not eat a drink until we have slain Paul.
So I'm sorry this wasn't to the chief captain, it was to the chief priests and elders, right?
Yeah.
There was about 40 of them.
Little 40. He's like, yeah, we're not going to do that.
We're going to eat a drink and we want Paul dead.
Basically put political pressure on the chief priests.
And now therefore you, with the consul, signify to the chief captain that he bring him down onto you tomorrow.
So they're saying, hey, yeah, we want Paul dead, and he needs to come to the council, back to the council again, and you need to tell the chief captain to bring him down tomorrow, as though you have inquired of something more perfectly concerning him, and we, or ever, will hear we come near and are ready to kill him.
So, yeah, this is how serious this matter is.
They want Paul dead.
Because, like I said in prior chapters, Paul is extremely effective.
Because he is spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ like wildfire.
And when Paul's sister's son, which would be his nephew in today's world, right?
Paul's nephew, heard of their lion in wait, He went and entered the castle and told Paul.
So, Paul's nephew was standing by listening to all this.
That's how we got...
And people say, well, how do they know what the chief priest said?
Well, if you read it, the reason why it's written here, Paul knew exactly what to write here.
Right?
Because the nephew was there to witness it to tell him what's going on.
And that's the other thing too, guys.
This is against these Bible scoffers, right?
Bible scoffers are people who purposely go out of their way to try to say the Bible's faults or contradict and whatever.
They'll say, well, if Paul wasn't there, right?
If nobody was in that council, how would they know what they were saying?
Well, yeah.
And they won't read that rush.
I'll show you that.
They'll make it look like a contradiction or some kind of error or whatever the case, right?
Or try to mock the Bible, right?
But when you keep reading the Bible, it explains itself.
So any so-called contradictions, any so-called errors, any so-called...
You know, whatever the case, right?
All you have to do is keep reading the context.
That's why context is key.
So you'll be able to tell them.
It's not a contradiction or anything like that.
If you actually read the Bible, you'll see that Paul's nephew was there.
He witnessed and heard all this and he went to tell Paul.
Just want to point that out, guys.
And there's a lot of people that go out of their way.
To mock the Bible and make videos and everything else.
And they know most people are not going to read it.
They'll throw a couple of verses out without giving you this verse.
You know what I mean?
For example.
So if I confuse you with anything, guys, please put it in the comments section and let me know at the time of the video or the verse, whatever.
And I'll explain it better.
So anyway, then Paul called one of the centurions onto him, that's the guard, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain, for he has a certain thing to tell him.
So he told one of the guards, hey, listen, could you bring my nephew to the chief captain?
You need to tell him something.
So the guard took him and brought him to the chief captain and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him and prayed me to bring this young man to you who has something to say to you.
Again, it's Paul's nephew, right?
And the chief captain took him by the hand and went with him aside privately and asked him, what is it you want to tell me?
And he said, the Jews have agreed to desire that those who bring down Paul tomorrow into the council, as though they would inquire somewhat of him more perfectly.
So this is Paul's nephew telling the chief captain what the Jews are planning to do, because he was there to witness it.
But do not, though, yield unto him for their lie in weight of him that more than 40 men Which have bound themselves with an oath that will not eat a drink until he's killed.
And now they are ready looking for a promise from them.
From me, right?
So they're waiting for a promise that, you know, yeah, we'll go by that.
We'll kill Paul, right?
So this is his nephew telling the chief captain everything they conspired to do.
About the 40 people who bound his curse upon him and everything, themselves.
And what the chief priest is trying to do and all that stuff.
So he's telling Paul everything.
I'm sorry, he's telling the chief captain everything.
Hopefully, it will help Paul, right?
So the chief captain then let the young man go and charge him, say, tell no one that you showed these things to me.
So in other words, chief captain told the kid, all right, you go now, but please, don't tell anybody.
I showed you that you told me these things.
I don't want nobody to know.
And, you know, in fact, don't even tell anybody you know at all.
You know what I mean?
Just go and you didn't tell me enough of them.
Right?
So he called unto him the two centurions, the two guards, saying, make ready 200 soldiers to go into Caesarea and horsemen three score and ten.
So three score and ten, which is about 300. 200 soldiers and 300 horsemen.
And 10 spearmen and 200. I'm sorry, and spearmen and 200. So, yeah.
Alright, so there's a lot of people.
A lot of military, yeah.
And during hour of the night.
So, he's telling his guards, like, assemble the army.
That's what it looks like, yeah.
They got 200 soldiers, 300 horsemen, and 200 spearmen.
So you're looking at 700 troops.
He said, prepare 700 troops, because we're going to Caesarea.
And they provided them beasts, which is the animals and all that, that they may set Paul on.
In other words, like a horse or something, maybe, or whatever, they rode back to a camel horse for Paul to ride on.
So they bring him safe into the felix of the government.
So, yeah, the chief captain, like, once he found out the Jews were planning the deal, right, because Paul's nephew was there to hear it all, and he went and told Paul, then Paul said, yeah, he told the guard, hey, let's go to the captain.
My nephew needs to tell him something.
And the nephew told him, so, and it looks like to me that the chief captain is looking out for Paul.
That's what this looks like.
So the chief captain is looking out for Paul now.
That's why he assembled this massive army to surround Paul and protect him.
Because they knew the people outside the capital wanted him dead.
And they would have killed him if he wasn't guarded, right?
That's why he's abdient about bringing Paul safely to Felix the governor.
And he wrote a letter after this man.
Claudius Lacerius unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greetings.
So this is a chief captain writing a letter to the governor, which is obviously a higher authority, right?
And this man was taken of the Jews and should have been killed of them.
Then came I with an army and rescued him and having understood that he was a Roman.
And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth before the council, into the council, right?
And whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of the death of the bonds.
So in other words, he's telling the governor, listen, he's like, yeah, I brought them before the council, and they couldn't come up with nothing to condemn him.
Like, he didn't break the law.
And he wasn't charged, you know, because of this, he wasn't charged, and it's not for him to be worthy of death, or being a captive.
So this is actually the chief captain going out to bat for Paul here.
You know, to the governor here.
And when it was told to me that the Jews laid wait for the men, in other words, they were waiting for Paul, I sent straight away to thee and gave commandment of his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him.
Farewell.
Sending off on a letter, right?
So then the soldiers, as it was commanded of them, took Paul and brought him to the night of Antibas.
By night, I'm sorry.
Took Paul at night.
So the soldiers took Paul at night and brought him to Antibas.
And on the morrow, which was the next day, Tomorrow, they left the horsemen to go with him and return to the castle.
So who, in memory of Jesus, told him, you stuck up for me in Jerusalem, now you're going to stick up for me in Rome, right?
That was the last chapter, I believe?
yeah so who when they came to Caesarea and delivered the epistle to the governor which is Paul when they came into Caesarea they delivered Paul to the governor presented Paul also before him So in other words, they brought Paul to the governor.
And there's Paul before the governor, standing before him.
And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what providence he was.
And when he understood that he was of Cilicia, I will hear thee, and he goes, alright, I'm going to say you're in Rome now, right?
I will hear thee, said he, and thine accusers will also come.
And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
So remember again, Jesus told him, in the last chapter, Appeared to Paul when he was in the castle that night.
He's like, all right, thank you for sticking up for me in Jerusalem.
Now I need you to testify, testify, I'm sorry.
Now I need you to testify before me, before me, before in Rome, right?
So now Paul's in Rome.
He was delivered to the governor, right?
And the governor's like, all right, all right, we're going to set up, we're going to set up this council.
And he goes, I'll hear you.
In other words, like, I'll hear your plea.
I'll hear your case.
I want to, you know, straighten us out once before we see.
What we're going to do is, what this is, is the court, right?
So, I'll hear what you have to say, and I want to hear what the accusers have to say.
Until then, into the court, you know, he commanded him to be kept in King Herod's judgment hall.
So, which goes on to chapter 24. We'll learn what the rest of that is, what goes on from there.
But as you can see, it looks like the chief captain there really went to bats for Paul, yeah.
And safely delivered him because, again, if Paul would have stepped out of the castle, they would have beat him to death.
So that's why he assembled that massive army to escort Paul by nighttime.
To the governor.
And he wrote a letter on behalf of Paul to the governor to say, hey, listen, yeah, this guy is really nothing.
He's a Roman.
These accusers really, you know, they don't have nothing on them.
But regardless, and so the governor being in fear, okay, he's like, all right, I want to, like, let's go to court, right?
If somebody just say, accuse you of doing something bad, right?
You get to plead your case, the accuser gets to plead their case.
And the judge rules their fourth.
So right now, Paul is waiting this court trial where he will get to speak to defend himself and his accusers, which is the elders, the chief priests and all that, What they have to say against him.
And with the charges and everything else.
So this is going to the high court.
So basically what I'm trying to point out right in the layman's term that Paul just went to a district court and now he's going to the high court.
So now he's in Rome and he's going to, in the next chapter where Paul will testify of Jesus Christ, just like he did in Jerusalem.
So if you've got any questions, comments or anything like that, guys, put it in the chat room.
I'm sorry, yeah, the comment section, not the chat.
The comment section, and I'll get back to you.
Let me know the verse or the time of the video, and I'll give you more clarification.
Other than that, if you've got any comments or whatever, put them in the comment section.
So, I'm pretty good at keeping up with the comments and whatnot.
So...
Trust the plan, the only plan, and that's the Bible, guys.
And don't take my word to anybody else's word, read it for yourselves.
And I know I have the same things before and after every reading.
We have to.
It's just like, we have to, even myself, I have to constantly remind myself of these specific things we do to keep in with the Word of God.
